First and second photodetectors having first and second collection areas receive return laser light that is reflected and scattered from a target, and generate first and second analog electrical output signals having first and second magnitudes. The second collection area is in close proximity to the first collection area. The first output signal is processed to obtain information related to the target. The first and the second output signals are processed, preferably by determining a ratio of the second magnitude to the first magnitude. A working distance to the target is determined based on the determined ratio. One or more reading parameters by which the target is electro-optically read are adjusted based on the determined working distance.

A target is read in the presence of ambient light. A scan component scans a laser beam across the target. A detector assembly detects and converts return laser light from the target into an information signal bearing information related to the target, and concomitantly detects and converts the ambient light into an ambient light signal. The assembly includes a first photodetector for generating a first output signal comprised of the information and the ambient light signals, a detector lens for focusing and directing the return laser light substantially onto the first photodetector, and a second photodetector for generating a second output signal substantially comprised of the ambient light signal. Signal processing circuitry processes the output signals to determine a magnitude of the ambient light signal, and suppresses the ambient light signal when the determined magnitude of the ambient light signal at least equals a threshold.

A color image of a target is captured by a color sensor in an imaging reader. A color image processing pipeline processes the captured color image with a plurality of color image processing components to display the image of a target with high fidelity. A target is read in the presence of interference light. A photodetector generates an output signal composed of an information signal and an interference light signal. A rangefinder determines the distance of the target in a range of working distances. A controller adjusts a scan angle of a scan drive to a narrow value and adjusts an output power of a laser diode to a low power level when the target is determined to be far out in the range. The controller adjusts the scan angle to a wide value and adjusts the output power to a high power level when the target is determined to be close in the range. Signal processing circuitry processes the output signal with the information signal having a greater magnitude than that of the interference signal due to the high power level to mitigate the presence of the interference light. A power safety arrangement including dual power monitors checks the output power of the laser beam.

Apparatus for and method of monitoring output power of a laser beam during reading of targets

Described is a method and system for establishing an authenticated wireless communication (e.g., using Bluetooth technology) between first and second mobile devices. The first device (e.g., a mobile barcode scanner) sends a signal to establish a wireless communication with the second device. The first device includes a data capturing arrangement ('DCA') as an only input device interface with a user thereof. The second device initiates an authentication process by requesting the first device to obtain a PIN code from the user. Once the first device obtains the PIN code from the user via the DCA, a pairing process is performed to compare the PIN code to entries in a database of authorized PIN codes. When the pairing process has been successfully completed, a link key is generated to establish the authenticated wireless communication between the first and second devices.

Laser power control arrangements interrupt power to a laser used in electro-optical readers upon detection of an over-power condition not conforming to preestablished regulatory standards. In one embodiment, during an operational mode, a difference between laser drive currents at two operating points is compared to a difference between laser drive currents at the same two operating points during a calibration mode. The over-power condition is recognized when the difference during the operational mode exceeds the difference during the calibration mode by a predetermined amount. In another embodiment, the laser is only energized to emit the beam at a reduced power level well below regulatory standards for staring at even if a motor drive failed.

Management of data capture systems

A device for picking rocks from a field includes a frame which is mounted on a pair of wheels. A hitch is pivotally attached to the frame and is adapted for engagement with a conventional tractor. The offset of the hitch is adjusted by a hydraulic cylinder to adjust the tracking of the frame behind the tractor. A reel is mounted for rotation on the frame and is powered by a chain and sprocket drive from a rotary hydraulic motor. The reel has a plurality of radially extending spokes, each terminating in a stone picking rake formed by a plurality of spaced teeth. The elevation of the reel with respect to ground level is adjusted by a pair of hydraulic cylinders connected to a pivotal reel mounting frame. A depth stop mechanism is provided to lock the reel in an adjusted elevational position. In a first embodiment, a semi-cylindrical stone collecting box is mounted within the reel frame. As each of the reel spokes rotates to a top position, collected stones fall by gravity into the open stone box. A hinged door is provided in the bottom of the stone box and is operated by a hydraulic cylinder for enabling the collected to be deposited in a desired location. In a second embodiment, the stone collecting box is replaced by an endless belt type conveyor for transporting the stones to a trailer or truck bed.
