An angular adjustment mechanism for a surgical instrument is described. The mechanism comprises an adjustment member () configured for rotation about a longitudinal axis (), the adjustment member comprising a plurality of pairs of facets () arranged about the longitudinal axis. Each of the plurality of pairs of facets defines a respective angled axis (B,C) at an angle (B,C) relative to the longitudinal axis. A pivoting member () is arranged to pivot about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and comprises a recess () for receiving the adjustment member and engaging one pair of the plurality of pairs of facets. This provides an angular adjustment mechanism in which facets on the outside of the adjustment member engage corresponding surfaces in a recess on a pivoting member. The use of facets provides a secure connection while allowing a greater degree of angular adjustment and providing a further benefit of simple operation.

Angular adjustment mechanism, surgical alignment guide and surgical instrument assembly

A surgical cutting guide () is described which comprises a body section delimiting a recess () extending into the body section from an external surface. The recess has a central axis and is for receiving an attachment protrusion () from a surgical alignment guide (). The recess comprises: a first portion () having a first constant cross section along the central axis; and a second portion () having a second constant cross section along the central axis which is larger than the first constant cross section. The first and second portions are coaxial with the central axis and the second portion is closer to the external surface than the first portion. This configuration creates a stepped surface in the recess which is engaged by corresponding features on a protrusion of a surgical alignment guide. The attachment protrusion () of the alignment guide () has a central axis and comprises: a first portion () having a first constant cross section along the central axis; and a second portion () having a second constant cross section along the central axis that is larger than the first constant cross section. The first portion is further away than the second portion, and the first and second portions are coaxial with the central axis. The surgical cutting guide and surgical alignment guide form a system in which the alignment guide can be removed more easily from the cutting guide because there is more freedom of movement once the stepped surfaces are disengaged.

An instrument for positioning a cup component of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis includes a shaft, and a flange located near an end of the shaft on which the cup component can be fixed. The flange extends from the shaft transversely, and can be retracted from an in-use position wherein the flange is received in a groove in the internal surface of the cup component when positioned over the said end of the instrument, and a retracted position in which the flange is withdrawn toward the axis of the shaft from the in-use position, allowing the cup component to be released from the instrument.

Instrument for positioning a cup component of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis

A combination cutting and spacer guide has a cutting block portion and a guide arm portion. The cutting block portion has a cutting guide slot and holes to receive pins or drills for mounting the combination cutting and spacer guide to the femur. The cutting guide portion also has a cutting guide slot defining the distal femoral resection plane. The guide arm portion has a planar femoral and tibial surfaces and an elongate slot between the surfaces. A shim has a shim arm with contact surfaces for contacting part of the guide arm and part of one of the bones of the knee and a mounting member connected to the shim arm. The shim arm mounting member is receivable in the elongate slot of the guide arm to mount the shim to the guide arm to adjust the level of the femoral resection plane.
