In one embodiment of the invention, motion is deliberately imparted to a sensor and/or an optical element while multiple exposures are taken to provide an enhanced image.

Methods and apparatus for a Curved Sensor System are disclosed. The present invention includes a wide variety of generally curved, aspheric or non-planar arrangement of sensors and their equivalents. The curved surfaces, edges or boundaries that define the geometry of the present invention may be continuous, or may be collections or aggregations of many small linear, planar or other segments which are able to approximate a curved line or surface.

Methods and apparatus for fabricating a curved sensor from silicon fibers are disclosed. In another embodiment, a curved sensor is produced having mini-sensors of differing sizes. Methods and apparatus for combining a mobile communication device having a camera () that includes a curved sensor () are disclosed. The present invention offers higher quality pictures that conventional phones that incorporate a flat sensor. These higher quality pictures are obtained without the need for large, bulky and expensive lenses. Higher light gathering capacity is provided, which reduces or eliminates the need for a flash to enhance ambient illumination. Longer battery life is obtained, since the need for a flash is reduced or eliminated. The combination of a mobile communication device with a camera that utilizes a curved sensor renders dedicated pocket cameras obsolete. The present invention, which, for the first time, combines a mobile communication device with a high performance camera, will reduce or eliminate the need to carry a separate stand-alone camera.

The location of a mobile unit is determined by evaluating the instantaneous distances between an apparatus traveling above the surface of the earth and the mobile unit. The instantaneous distances are determined by measuring the travel time of a plurality of signals and calculating the distance based on the speed of the signal. One of two possible location regions is identified as the region including the location of the mobile unit by observing the motion of the mobile unit resulting from the rotation of the Earth.

An operator interface device is connected to the central control unit of a remotely-monitored security system, which also includes one or more local control units located at monitored sites. A local control unit may initiate a telephone call to the central control unit to alert the operator of an event such as an intrusion at the site. The interface device has a keypad on which the operator can enter commands that are transmitted to the local control unit. A processor in the interface device uses a look-up table, state machine or other predetermined relationship to translate the command entered by the operator into the native or local command recognized by the local control unit.

Subterranean tunnels extend deep into the Earth's crust between two points on the Earth's surface. A magnetically levitated rail transportation system operates in each tunnel. Gravity provides most of the energy needed to propel the trains. One or more magnetic accelerators in the tunnel provide the energy boost needed to compensate for frictional energy losses. Steam turbine-powered generators, disposed in the tunnels, provide electrical power to the magnetic levitation system and accelerators. The heat from the surrounding rock may be used to produce steam for powering the turbines. A machine for constructing the tunnels bores through solid rock and molten or partially molten rock. As the machine moves forward, it lays pipes that are fed from the surface through the newly-bored tunnel. The pipes carry chiller fluid that solidifies magma that comes into contact with the pipes. As a result, the machine bores through molten or partially molten rock and leaves a tunnel having hardened rock walls behind it as it moves. The chiller fluid is continuously pumped through the pipes from one end of the tunnel to the other, not only to maintain the tunnel walls in a solidified state but also to provide steam for powering the turbines.

A remotely-monitored stored-audio security system has a local control unit at a monitored premises that communicates with a remotely located central control unit for alerting personnel of an alarm at the premises. Microphones located on the monitored premises receive sounds that are recorded on a recording device in the local control unit. When the alarm occurs the recording device ceases recording, thereby preserving any sounds that occurred prior to and immediately after the activation of the security system. A detector monitors the input to the recording device and detects the occurrence of a discrete sound, i.e., a sound exceeding the level of ambient noise. When the local control unit transmits the alarm indication it also transmits an indication to the central control unit for informing personnel whether any discrete sounds have been recorded. Personnel at the monitoring center can then enter commands on a console to receive live audio detected by a microphone in real-time or play back and receive recorded audio. Personnel may also receive a mix of audio from both sources. The audio played back by the recording device may be transmitted to the central control unit in a compressed format to reduce transmission time. The central control unit may have a similar recording device for recording transmitted audio.
