A remote, electrical steering system for marine vehicles including an electrical motor operable by a control and power circuit to rotate a drive screw having a screw connection to a nut in a drive tube for moving the drive tube in translation to cause steering movement of a motor-rudder with the control circuit sensing various fault conditions for placing the electrical motor in a brake condition to inhibit inadvertent steering and with the screw and nut connection resisting backlash from the motor-rudder to inhibit inadvertent steering and isolate the electrical motor and associated gearing from backlash loads.

A signalling wheel cover, including inner and outer housings, is provided with lights around the circumference of the outer housing which sequentially illuminate as the two housings rotate with respect to one another. The outer housing is secured to a vehicle wheel. Coils, to which the lights are connected, are mounted to the outer housing. The inner housing, to which magnets are mounted, is rotatably secured relative to the outer housing to allow independent rotation of the two housings. As the wheel carrying the outer housing begins to rotate, the inner housing tends to resist the rotation due to its inertia. This resistance to rotation can be enhancedd by adding a counterweight to the inner housing so the inner housing is mounted pendulously. As the coils rotate through the magnetic fields of the magnets, current flow is induced in the coils which causes illumination of the lights in a sequential pattern.

There is provided an improvement in a power inverter for converting D.C. voltage into an alternating voltage by alternating gating D.C. current across a load. This type of inverter employs a gating circuit for providing gating signals in two sets of switches at a frequency which controls the power factor of the voltage and current applied to the load, means for detecting the power factor, means for comparing the detected power factor with a reference signal indicative of a desired operating power factor and means for adjusting the frequency in accordance with the comparison whereby the power factor tends to be at the desired power factor level. The improvement in this type of inverter is the provision of means for changing the reference signal during the operation of the inverter in accordance with a control signal so that the desired power factor can be changed during start up of the inverter.
