Aqueous polyurethane dispersions and coatings and heat-activatable adhesives made from the dispersions are disclosed. The dispersions include a polyurethane reaction product of a polyester polyol and a polyisocyanate. The polyester polyol comprises recurring units of at least one C-Caliphatic diol, at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic C-Cdicarboxylic acid, and an aromatic diacid source, which can be recycled PET. The dispersion is formulated using 1 to 3 moles of an acid-functional diol per mole of polyester polyol. Dispersions for the adhesives are produced at NCO/OH molar ratios within the range of 0.90 to 0.98. The adhesives successfully bond a wide range of plastic and metal materials, often demonstrating substrate failure, even with steel. This contrasts with commercial adhesives such as EVA that exhibit only adhesive failure with the same substrates.

Polyurethane dispersions and their use to produce coatings and adhesives

Maleate polyester polyols and coatings made from the polyols are disclosed. The polyester polyols comprise recurring units of (a) a digested thermoplastic polyester or an aromatic dicarboxylate source; (b) a diol; (c) 5 to 95 mole % of an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated monomer; and (d) 5 to 95 mole % of adipic acid, succinic acid, or a mixture thereof, where the mole % ranges for (c) and (d) are based on the combined molar amounts of (c) and (d). The polyols have hydroxyl numbers within the range of 25 to 450 mg KOH/g, an average of 0.5 to 2.5 reactive unsaturation sites per molecule, and a viscosity less than 1500 cP at 75&#xb0; C. The polyols are thermally curable or energy-curable. Coatings made from the maleate polyester polyols are also described. Traditional coatings based on polyisocyanates and/or (meth)acrylates can be made, in some cases with improved properties and reduced reliance on the acrylate or isocyanate-based components. Surprisingly, the maleate polyester polyols can also be cured directly using UV to produce coatings under ambient conditions without the need for either acrylic or isocyanate functionality, and this allows coating formulators to reduce cost and more easily achieve regulatory compliance without sacrificing important coating properties. Rigid polyisocyanurate and polyurethane foams produced from the maleate polyester polyols have improved fire retardance.

The present invention relates to coatings, particularly high performance coatings, containing a polyester polyol comprising recurring units derived from a polyacid source, poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) (PBAC), and a glycol. The PBAC is preferably recycled poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) (rPBAC). These coatings provide improved salt spray and stain resistance along with a variety of other coating performance attributes. The polyols can contain a significant recycle and biobased content, making them sustainable alternatives to petroleum based polyols.

The present invention provides substantially isocyanate-free multicomponent compositions useful in making rapid dry automotive primer compositions and coatings, the compositions having a % PVC of from 20 to 60, or preferably, from 25 to 50, and comprising one or more pigment, extender or filler, one or more a) polycarbamates from alkyd polyol or acrylic polyol and one or more b) a polyaldehydes or the acetal or hemiacetal thereof as a second component. The multicomponent compositions cure quickly at a temperature of from 0&#xb0; C. to less than 80&#xb0; C. to form a crosslinked polyurethane which dries to enable sanding after only 15 to 45 minutes.

A method for producing polycarbamate comprising: contacting at least one carbamylating agent with a polyol in the presence of a carbamylation catalyst to form a reaction mixture having an acid value from 3 to 50 mg KOH/g dry polyol is provided. Polyester polyols, processes for making them, and applications for the polyols are disclosed. In some aspects, the polyols comprise recurring units from a thermoplastic polyester or an aromatic polyacid source, a glycol, and a lignin, tannin, or mixture thereof. Optionally, the polyols incorporate recurring units of a hydrophobe. The polyols are made in one or multiple steps; in some aspects, the thermoplastic polyester or aromatic polyacid source and the glycol are reacted first, followed by reaction with the lignin, tannin, or mixture thereof. High-recycle-content polyols having desirable properties and attributes for formulating polyurethane products, including two-component polyurethane coatings, can be made. The polyols provide a sustainable alternative to bio- or petrochemical-based polyols.

High recycle content polyols from thermoplastic polyesters and lignin or tannin

The present invention relates to polyester polyols made from aromatic polyacid sources such as thermoplastic polyesters. The polyols can be made by heating a thermoplastic polyester such as virgin polyethylene terephthalate, recycled polyethylene terephthalate, or mixtures thereof, with a glycol to give a digested intermediate which is then reacted with a digestible polymer, which can be obtained from various recycle waste streams. The polyester polyols comprise a glycol-digested polyacid source and a further digestible polymer. The polyester polyols provide a sustainable alternative to petrochemical or biochemical based polyester polyols.

Polyester polyols from recycled polymers and waste streams

The instant invention provides a polyester composition, method of producing the same, coating compositions made therefrom, and coating layers made from such coatings. The thermoset polyester composition according to the present inventions comprises the reaction product of: (a) one or more polyacids comprising at least 50 percent by the combined weight of one or more aromatic diacids; and (b) one or more polyols comprising at least 40 percent by the combined weight of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutanediol; wherein said polyester composition has a glass transition temperature in the range of from 70 to 125&#xb0; C., a number average molecular weight between 6,000 and 20,000, a hydroxyl number in the range of from 4 to 18.

Polyeste composition and method of producing the same

The instant invention provides a crosslinkable coating composition, and method of producing the same. The crosslinkable coating composition according to the present invention comprises: (a) one or more polycarbamates derived from one or more polyesters comprising the condensation reaction product of one or more polyols with one or more polyacids, wherein said one or more polyols comprise at least 25 percent by weight of one or more units having 4 or more hydroxyl groups; (b) one or more crosslinking agents; (c) one or more acid catalysts; and (d) optionally one or more organic solvents.

The instant invention provides crosslinkable compositions, and method of producing the same. Crosslinkable composition and method of producing the same

The present invention provides a coating composition, a process for producing the same, one or more coating layers derived therefrom, and articles comprising one or more such coating layers. The coating composition according to the present invention comprises: (a) from 10 to 90 percent by weight of an aqueous, high-solid, solvent-free alkyd dispersion comprising: (i) from 40 to 70 percent by weight of one or more alkyds based on the total weight of the dispersion, wherein each said one or more alkyds has an acid value of less than 20 and a molecular weight (Mn) in the range of greater than 1000 Dalton; (ii) from less than 10 percent by weight of one or more surfactants, based on the total weight of the dispersion; and (iii) from 30 to 55 percent by weight of water, based on the total weight of the dispersion; wherein said aqueous, high-solid, solvent-free alkyd dispersion has an average particle size diameter in the range of from 0.05 to 5 &#x3bc;m; (b) from 10 to 90 one or more second dispersions, one or more second emulsions, or combinations thereof; wherein said coating composition has a solid content of in the range of from 25 to 65 percent by weight of solid content, based on the total weight of the coating composition, and the coating composition has a pH in the range of from 7 to 11, and wherein the coating composition has a volume average particle size in the range of from 0.03 to 5 &#x3bc;m, and wherein the coating composition has a viscosity in the range of from 100 to 10,000 cP.
