A punch unit includes a punch driver having a punch connected to it. A guide bushing receives the punch for guiding its axial displacement. A compression spring urges the punch driver rearwardly, away from the guide bushing. An intermediate member located between the guide bushing and the compression spring includes a collar, a holding member positioned concentrically inside the collar and releasable retaining means. The collar is rotatable relative to the holding member such that rotation in a first direction moves the retaining means into a locked position in which the guide bushing is prevented from moving longitudinally out of said holding member and rotation of the collar in a second direction opposite to the first direction moves the retaining means into an unlocked position in which the guide bushing is removable from the holding member. An indexing pin, also located in the intermediate member, releasably engages selected detent seats in the guide bushing to establish the rotational position of the guide bushing and hence also the punch length.

Punch unit

A punch unit allows an adjustable length adjustment of the punch by disengaging projection-seat means which connect the housing and the guide bushing and then rotating the guide bushing relative to the housing. Additionally, the housing has mutually engaging housing top and bottom parts that have engaging fingers and corresponding grooves that cooperate during punching. The connection between the housing and guide bushing includes a C-ring, attached to the housing, having protrusions which are biased to engage a groove located on the guide bushing.

The punch unit comprises a punch driver connected with a punch which on its back end has a base. Furthermore, safeguarding members which keep the punch and the punch driver free of relative rotation during the stroke of the punch, and a pre-loaded compression spring which during the stroke of the punch can be compressed between the base and a guide bushing receiving the punch so that it cannot be rotated, but is axially displaceable, are part of it. To obtain a simpler and quicker assembly and disassembly of the punch it is provided that the pressure spring is maintained under pre-load in the guide bushing which is embodied as one or several pieces. A catch releasably supported on the rear end of the guide bushing and releasably engaging a recess, open toward the back, in the circumferential surface of the punch driver head prevents the punch driver head from jumping toward the back out of the guide bushing.

The invention provides a punch press and shearing tool which operate to provide a series of cuts linked end-to-end for severing a work piece such as a piece of sheet metal. The shearing tool includes first and second elongated, cooperating cutting blades. Each of the blades has a pair of slidably related faces that slide against one another in a plane of reciprocation. The cutting edges are oriented at a small angle, e.g. 2.degree. to 6.degree., relative to one another to sever a piece of sheet stock progressively along a line with a scissor action. An intermittent work piece advancing motor shifts the work piece toward the cutting blades and parallel to the cut when the blades are apart. Gripping members can be yieldably mounted adjacent the cutting blades to grasp and forcefully hold the work piece in place as one blade moves toward the other. Yieldable stripper members on opposite sides of the second blade engage and independently deal with the stock on opposite sides of the cut.

Shearing tool for punch presses

In accordance with the present invention, a punching assembly is provided which includes a punch slidably mounted in a housing. An air chamber is located between the punch and the housing for air cooling the punch, with means associated between the housing and the punch for automatically transferring air into the chamber in response to the reciprocation of the punch in the housing. The punch has a flange with a sliding fit in the housing to define a piston for changing the volume of the air chamber. In accordance with another feature of the invention, the stripper plate is removable and is automatically locked in place when inserted, i.e., it is self-locking.

Punch assembly

An indexable multi-tool for punch presses wherein a plurality of individual punches are held at a singly punching station in a turret-type punch press such that any one of the plurality of punches can be selected upon a rotation of a punch carrier relative to the turret. A striker is carried in the indexable station which does not rotate relative to the turret and which contains an axially extending portion under which the selected punch is positioned in order to be used for punching. Stripper buttons are held on the indexable station by a rotating ring for easy removal and die buttons are held in a die carrier to rotate synchronously with the indexable station.

Indexable multi-tool for punch press

In accordance with the present invention, a punching assembly is provided. The punch assembly preferably includes a casing or sleeve in which a punch is mounted for longitudinal sliding movement. In accordance with one feature of the invention, a stripper plate is provided adjacent the operating end of the punch. The stripper plate includes a central opening for the punch that surrounds and guides its cutting end. A retaining means is preferably provided to cover a portion of the stripper plate at times to keep the stripper within the assembly until it is to be released. The punch is provided with three longitudinally spaced apart bearing surfaces including a first bearing surface between the bore of the sleeve and a tang at the top of the punch assembly, a second bearing surface between the bore of the sleeve and a mating portion of the punch and a third bearing surface between the stripper plate and the operating end of the punch to thereby distribute loads, minimize wear on the punch and further improve operating precision. An additional feature of the inventiion concerns a punch lubrication trough and lubricating system.

A punch assembly is described for a punch press having a quick tool change capability. The punch assembly comprises a punch sleeve having a punch slidably mounted therein. A tang extends from the sleeve, and a bolt is connected between the tang and the punch. An ejection spring member is mounted between the tang and the bolt for yieldably biasing the bolt in the direction of the punch. An elastic retraction member is mounted in the sleeve for biasing the punch and tang toward one end of the sleeve. Means is provided for retaining the ejection spring and bolt within the punch assembly during partial disassembly thereof so that only the punch is removed during said partial disassembly while the ejection spring and bolt remain in place when the punch is withdrawn after the bolt is unscrewed from the punch. A screw-threaded punch length adjustment platen is threadedly connected between the tang and the punch for adjusting the distance that the punch extends from the punch assembly.

Punch assembly with improved disassembly features

A punch assembly for a punch press is described which includes an external housing or sleeve having a punch slidably mounted therein with a spring such as a disc spring for yieldably biasing the punch toward one end of the sleeve and a removable stripper plate mounted on the sleeve in a position around the operating end of the punch. The punch is preferably keyed to the sleeve in more than one location and the stripper plate guides the punch by preventing rotation as well as lateral deflection. A retaining member such as a ring surrounds the stripper plate and can be manipulated manually, e.g. by rotating it, to enable the punch and stripper plate to be ejected by means of a spring.
