A thermal transfer overcoating technology for reducing overcoat tags. Skewing the interface between a carrier ribbon to coated document at the peeling of the carrier from the coated document concentrates the forces at the interface to a smaller region of the document edge. Moreover, tensioning the document at the interface changes the forces at the interface from peeling type to tensile type.

Thermal transfer overcoat tag reduction

The present invention is drawn to the thermal transfer overcoating of images printed on porous media, and methods of overcoating images printed on porous media. Upon use of the systems and methods of the present invention, a thermally coated print is generated that can comprise a porous media substrate having printed thereon a digitally produced image. The digitally produced image and the porous media substrate is thermally coated by an adhesive protective layer, wherein the adhesive protective layer has a tangent d that is greater than 1 and melt viscosity less than 1&#xd7;10Pa.&#xb7;sec. as applied above its phase transition temperature. Thus, the voids in the porous media substrate can be substantially filled, and further, substantially no tags remain on the print.

A method of imaging in an imaging device includes optically mapping a surface area of media to be imaged by the imaging device and controlling the imaging device based on the mapped surface area such that imaging occurs only on the media. Preferably, the surface area includes substantially an entire area of the media associated with at least one given scan line of the imaging device. Mapping of the surface area includes identifying peripheral bounds of the media and voids, if any, in the media. In a laser printer employing the present invention, image development is controlled by enabling and disabling the laser beam based on image data in coordination with the mapped surface area of the media.

A system for projecting electrically conductive or semi-conductive toner directly on to print media using a direct electrostatic projection printing device that includes a projection control electrode positioned between a reference electrode and an orifice plate. A mechanism is provided for generating a first electric field between the reference electrode and the orifice plate to form a cloud of toner particles between the reference electrode and the orifice plate. A mechanism is also provided for intermittently generating a second electric field between the projection control electrode and the orifice plate to project toner particles through the orifice plate on to a sheet of paper.

A laser printer produces an image of raster scan lines exhibiting a pitch distance p. The printer includes a photoreceptor and n laser sources, where n.gtoreq.2. First and second sets of laser sources, in one embodiment, produce plural optical beams which, when imaged on the photoreceptor, are separated by pitch distance p in the direction of movement of the photoreceptor. The first set and second sets of laser sources are separated by a distance S.sub.PR =c(1+qr)p, where: c=number of laser sources in each set, q=an integer, and r=number of rows of laser sources in both the first and second sets. The optical beams are modulated with pixel value data in accordance with a correspondence of image scan lines and positions of the optical beams on the photoreceptor. The photoreceptor is moved by a distance (q.multidot.c.multidot.r)p between scans. In such manner, an interleaving of the scan lines is achieved, which allows substantial separation of laser diodes on a laser diode chip.

Method and apparatus for interleaving raster scan lines in a multi-beam

An image forming device includes output rollers disposed for ejecting media out of the image forming device, and a single solenoid activated bi-directional output drive mechanism connected to the output rollers for bi-directionally driving the output rollers and for enabling a return path back through the output rollers for duplexing of the media. In an alternate embodiment, the image forming device includes substantially all components necessary for duplexing, integrated with the base engine of the image forming device, but excludes the solenoid activated bi-directional output drive mechanism, for providing a non-duplexing system that is optionally and easily upgradeable to a duplexing system.

An electrostatic printing apparatus includes a rotating transfer drum having an outer transfer surface. A plurality of direct toner projection units are positioned adjacent the transfer surface of the rotating transfer drum to project toner patterns of different colors onto the transfer surface in response to modulated signals. After the patterns are applied to the drum, they are transferred to paper and fused. The drum is constructed of two components: a base layer or core which is conductive, and a surface layer which is chosen primarily for its surface properties. The surface layer is conductive enough to allow toner particles to dissipate their electrical charges before additional toner is applied by downstream toner projection units.

Direct toner projection printing using an intermediate transfer medium

A laser printer produces a raster image of plural scan lines of image pixels, each raster scan line separated from an adjacent raster scan line by a pitch distance p. The printer includes a movable photoreceptor and n laser sources, where n.ltoreq.2. The laser sources produce n optical beams, separated by a distance of (n+1)p in a direction of movement of the photoreceptor. A scanner scans the n optical beams in parallel paths across the photoreceptor as they are modulated in accordance with pixel data provided from an image buffer. Control circuitry modulates the n optical beams, respectively, with pixel values from one set of n raster scan lines. The n raster scan lines of the set are separated from each other by a distance of (n+1)p. At the completion of each scan, the photoreceptor is moved by a distance (n.times.p). The n optical beams are again modulated with pixel values from another set of n raster scan lines that are respectively, (n+1)p distant from the n raster scan lines of the first set. In such manner, an interleaving of the scan lines is achieved, using plural optical beams from a laser diode chip to produce the n laser beams.

An electrophotographic printer such as a laser printer uses a liquid toner solution in order to deliver toner having a small toner particle size. A developer roller is immersion coated with the liquid toner solution, and return fluid is scraped from the developer roller with a scraper blade or other wiper in order to provide a clean surface for re-coating the developer roller. The return fluid is reintroduced into the fluid supply stream without adversely affecting image quality while at the same time maintaining a homogeneous coating on the developer roller of fluid supplied to the optical photoreceptor (OPR). The return fluid is maintained in a homogeneous state by the use of a plurality of nozzles which control flow to an immersion bath for the roller. An absorptive nib roller forms a nib for the purpose of separating toner from the OPR, and a pressure roller forcibly removes excess fluid from the nib roller, thereby increasing the efficiency of the nib roller in removing fluid from the OPR. At the end of the image, pressure of the nib roller against the OPR is reduced and the nib roller decompresses at the nib. The invention is further enhanced by the use of a capillary drain between the developer roller and the absorptive nib roller station. Capillary attraction drains toner fluid from the OPR and reduces the load of non-image toner on the nib roller or other extraction device, and has the further advantage of reducing a tendency of toner fluid to travel transversely toward the edges of the OPR.

Liquid toner extraction apparatus for electrophotographic equipment

An electrophotographic printer such as a laser printer uses a liquid toner solution in order to deliver toner having a small toner particle size. In order to maintain homogeneity of the liquid toner solution, an in-line mixer is used in the supply to an immersion bath for the developer roller. In order to further enhance mixing, return fluid from the developer roller is scraped from the developer roller with a scraper blade. The return fluid is reintroduced into the fluid supply stream through a nozzle arrangement which controls flow to the an immersion bath for the roller.

In-line tubular mixing device for liquid electrophotographic purposes

A hybrid type thermal ink jet (TIJ) pen and method of manufacture wherein a plurality of individual thin film ink jet printheads, each including an orifice plate, are selectively spaced on and secured to an insulating substrate having ink feed ports therein which supply ink to the printheads. Buss lines and integrated circuit driver-decoder packages may be mounted in a planar fashion with respect to the printheads and electrically interconnected to drive the printheads. Alternatively, the individual printheads may be mounted on a unitary insulating support and ink feed structure such as a ceramic substrate and interconnected to off-substrate TIJ driver circuitry by way of printed or silk-screened electrical leads. These leads may be laid down in a controlled pattern on the surface of the ceramic substrate and used to interconnect bonding pads on the TIJ printheads with the above off-substrate driver circuitry and power supplies. If desired, integrated circuit packages may be mounted in slots cut in the ceramic substrate in a planar arrangement with respect to the printheads.

Large expandable array thermal ink jet pen and method of manufacturing

This application discloses a new and improved thermal ink jet printhead and method of manufacture wherein a tape automated bond (TAB) flexible circuit is sequentially thermosonically bonded in a one-by-one wire bonding process to aligned conductive traces on a thin film resistor substrate. These traces provide electrical current paths for a corresponding plurality of heater resistors on the substrate, and these resistors function to heat a corresponding plurality of ink reservoirs in a thermal ink jet printhead.

Thermal ink jet printhead assembly employing beam lead interconnect

A multichamber ink jet pen has a printhead comprising a plurality of nozzle groups corresponding in number to the number of chambers. The nozzle groups are respectively in communication with the individual chambers for receiving ink. The multi-color ink jet pen is retrofittable in a single color printer to provide multicolor printing capability. The nozzles in the nozzle groups are formatted to correspond to the nozzle format in the printhead of the single color ink jet pen, including the same nozzle spacing, to take advantage of the single color printer control for that nozzle format. The nozzle groups each duplicate a different longitudinal segment of the single color nozzle column pattern. The nozzle groups are staggered in the scan direction and the end nozzles in the respective groups have the same longitudinal spacing therebetween as the nozzles in the nozzle columns to duplicate the nozzle spacing of the single color nozzle column pattern within and between the nozzle groups of the multi-color recording head.

This application is directed to an ink jet pen having an ink supply housing which includes a primary ink reservoir (30) and a secondary ink reservoir (26). A balancing capillary member is positioned within the ink supply housing and includes ink flow path (20, 24) which extends between the primary ink reservoir (30) and the secondary ink reservoir (26). This capillary member is operative to draw ink from the primary ink reservoir (30) and into or toward the secondary ink reservoir (26) by capillary action as temperature and pressure within the primary ink reservoir increases. Conversely, when temperature and pressure in the housing decreases, ink will be drawn back into or toward the primary ink reservoir (30). In addition, the primary ink reservoir (30) is connected by way of a suitable ink feed path to an ink jet printhead (32) for supplying ink to the printhead during an ink jet printing operation.
