A bi-directional filter has a pair of flapper-type check valve assemblies 20, 21 for directing fluid flow unidirectionally through a centrally supported molded desiccant core 22. Each check valve assembly is a three part structure spot-welded into a unitary assembly having a centering support plate, a core support cup and an intermediate flapper valve plate. A depth-type filter media circumferentially surrounds the desiccant core and extends between the check valve assembly on either end of the core for providing filtering for the fluid prior to entering the molded desiccant core. A depth-type filter media 80, 81 is also provided at each axial end of the core for providing fine filtration of the fluid after the fluid has passed through the core. The outer filter media is arranged to allow a portion of fluid therein to bypass the desiccant core.

A device for separating oil from an oil/gas mixture in a refrigeration or heat pump system includes a cylindrical housing circumscribing a central axis with upper and lower end caps. A scroll-shaped separator baffle disposed in the housing defines a flow path extending radially-inward in a spiral manner from a peripheral region of the housing toward the central axis of the housing. An inlet conduit in the upper end cap directs an oil/gas mixture into the housing. An upper baffle plate supporting an upper end of the separator baffle directs the oil/gas mixture from the inlet to the peripheral region of the housing and into the separator baffle. The oil in the mixture generally separates from the gas in the mixture and deposits on the wall of the separator baffle the mixture flows radially inward through the separator baffle. An outlet conduit in the lower end cap aligned with the central axis and extending upwardly into the separator baffle directs the resulting oil-free gas stream from the housing. The oil on the baffle wall coalesces and drains downwardly through filter media supported in a lower baffle assembly at a lower end of the separator baffle. The filtered oil can be either directed through a drain tube to appropriate components, or directed through an opening in the outlet conduit for re-introduction into the gas stream.

An accumulator for a refrigeration system includes a housing having a cylindrical sidewall, a lower end wall, and an upper end cap. Inlet and outlet passages are provided in the upper end cap for directing refrigerant into and out of the accumulator. A U-shaped return conduit is provided in the accumulator for directing vapor or gaseous refrigerant out of the accumulator. A baffle having a central circular opening is retained between a circular bead on the return conduit and the upper end cap. The circular bead surrounds the conduit toward the outlet end of the conduit. The return conduit is introduced through the central opening in the baffle until the bead contacts the inside surface of the baffle around the central opening. The outlet end of the return conduit is then introduced into the outlet passage in the upper end cap and secured therein such as by mechanically deforming (e.g., burnishing) the conduit outwardly against the inner wall of the passage. The baffle is trapped between the bead on the return conduit and the inside surface of the upper end cap in a secure and fluid-tight manner.

Universal accumulator for automobile air conditioning systems

An accumulator for a refrigeration system includes a housing having a cylindrical sidewall and upper and lower end walls. Inlet and outlet tubes are provided in the housing for directing refrigerant into and out of the accumulator. The inlet tube includes a first end fluidly connected to an inlet fitting at the upper end wall of the housing, and a second end located proximate the lower end wall of the housing. A longitudinal orifice is provided along the entire length of the inlet tube, from a location above the level of stored liquid refrigerant in the accumulator, to a location below the level of stored liquid. The orifice is oriented to direct fluid tangentially along the inside surface of the side wall. The inlet tube is formed by a strip of material where the side edges of the strip are brought together to define the opening, or the side edges can be brought into contact along a seam and a plurality of openings can be provided along the tube. The inlet tube can also comprise a strip of material which cooperates with the inside surface of the sidewall to form a flow path from the inlet fitting into the housing. In this case, both side edges of the inlet tube can be located against the inside surface of the sidewall. A series of fluid openings are formed along one side edge to direct fluid tangentially along the inside surface of the sidewall. Alternatively, one side edge can be spaced apart from the sidewall to define the longitudinal opening. In any case, the lower end of the inlet tube can be spaced from the lower end wall of the accumulator and can include an end cap or can be in contact with the lower end wall.

A refrigerant recycling system (10) has a compressor (12) and identical first and second drier/separators (18, 20). Refrigerant material to be reclaimed is drawn into an inlet (22) of the first drier/separator, in which lubricant is separated from refrigerant vapor. After the lubricant is removed, the refrigerant vapor is filtered as it passes through a screen (80), a bed of molecular sieve material (82), and a fibrous pad (84). After passing through the first drier/separator, the refrigerant enters the compressor in which clean lubricant material is introduced to enable the compressor to operate effectively. From the compressor, the refrigerant vapor and clean lubricant passes through the second drier/separator wherein the clean lubricant is removed and the refrigerant vapor is again filtered. The twice filtered vapor is then passed to a condenser (44) in which it is condensed to a liquid. The clean refrigerant liquid is delivered from the reclamation system cleansed of impurities.

Refrigerant recycling system and apparatus

In a construction for joining a copper tube (20) to a steel body (10) which may be part of a device such as an accumulator used in an air conditioning system, the copper tube is passed into an opening (14) in a wall (12) of the steel body. The opening in the steel body is bounded by a neck projection (18) which extends outward therefrom. A copper collar (24) includes a first portion (26) which accepts neck projection (18) of the steel body. A second portion (28) of the copper collar (24) accepts the copper tube. A mass (34) of brazing material is positioned in the collar in a tapered transitional portion (30) between the first and second portions of the collar. When the body, tube and collar are assembled and placed in a brazing furnace, the brazing material melts and flows by capillary action between the first portion of the collar and the outside of the neck projection of the steel body. The brazing material also flows between the second portion of the collar and the tube. Upon cooling, the brazing material forms a strong, fluid-tight weld which joins the body and the tube.

A biflow filter drier has a pair of flapper-type check valve assemblies for directing fluid flow unidirectionally through a centrally supported molded desiccant core. Each check valve assembly is a three part structure spot welded into a unitary assembly comprising a centering support plate, a core support cup and an intermediate flapper valve plate. Two flapper valves are formed from the valve plate and comprise the check valves covering valve openings in the suport plate and support cup. The material which formed the central opening in the support plate is bent at an angle to the support plate and provides an overtravel stop for the check valve. An angled surface of the core support cup provides an overtravel stop for the second check valve.

A protective spacer for fittings and the like consists of tubular plastic body member with a transverse end wall having a plurality of radiating slits therein forming plural gripper tabs. The body member is formed of thermoplastic material and the tabs are resiliently deformable into a tunnel configuration adapted to receive a portion of a fitting member and to be self-supported thereon. The spacer provides radial spacing from the thus supported fitting portion and axial spacing for opposed structures in abutment with the transverse end wall and free end of the body member.

A suction accumulator for air conditioning systems and the like consists of a tubular casing with brazed end caps, one of which has inlet and outlet fittings therein which support both ends of a U-shaped conduit within the casing. Inlet and outlet apertures in the conduit and a deflector therebetween to isolate the apertures and direct fluid flow are formed by notching the conduit and cutting and deforming the opposite side to provide a baffle. The ends of the conduit are of different diameters so that a predetermined orientation of the conduit and the apertures therein can be assured within the casing.
