A transport refrigeration unit includes an integrally mounted unitary engine driven generator wherein the generator is cooled by the circulation of oil over the stator coils and the rotor to thereby provide a cooling system that is closed from the outside environment and capable of increased cooling efficiencies. In one embodiment, the circulation of the engine oil is integrated into the generator such that its serves the dual purpose of cooling the generator. In other embodiments, the oil is contained entirely within the generator and is circulated by various means such as by a pump and spray, a slinger or total immersion.

Oil cooled generator for trailer refrigeration unit

A permanent magnet apparatus () for achieving electrical performance is provided. The apparatus () includes a cylindrical stator assembly () having a plurality of stator pole assemblies () and a cylindrical rotor assembly () having a plurality of rotor pole assemblies (). Each stator pole assembly () includes a wire coil () and a laminated stack () of axially aligned stator segments (). Each of the stator segments () has a center-post portion () that is detachably engaged to a back-iron portion (). Each rotor pole assembly () is provided with a laminated stack () of axially aligned rotor segments () to which is secured a permanent magnet (). Preferably, the stator pole assemblies () are secured to a base plate () by fastening rods () and the stator assembly () includes stacks () of back-iron portions () where each stack () is positioned to abut two stator pole assemblies (). The rotor pole assemblies () are preferably secured to a rotor plate () by fastening rods () and magnet retention-stops () defined by stacked rotor segments () frictionally support the permanent magnet (). The apparatus () is most desirably operated as a low-shaft-speed, permanent magnet alternator.

An electric motor or generator assembly includes a component, such as a stator, having a plurality of windings. A wire set including a plurality of individually conductive wires twisted together is manipulated within a core to establish the desired number of windings having the desired cross sectional area. In one example, a plurality of such wire sets are manipulated simultaneously to establish the windings. Litz wire is one example type of wire set that is useful in an assembly designed according to this invention. There are more than 100 individual wires within each winding according to one example stator designed according to this invention.
