An apparatus, in accordance with one approach, includes a receiving area configured to receive a plurality of tape spool pairs. A drive mechanism is configured to selectively drive the tape spool pairs. A magnetic head configured to perform data operations on magnetic recording tapes of the tape spool pairs is also present. A positioning mechanism is configured to selectively align the magnetic head to a selected one of the tape spool pairs. An engagement mechanism is configured to create a relative movement between the magnetic head and the magnetic recording tape of the selected tape spool pair for engaging the magnetic recording tape with the magnetic head. A controller is configured to instruct the drive mechanism to drive the selected tape spool pair during performance of data operations on the selected tape spool pair, and to instruct the drive mechanism to drive a second tape spool pair for performing a second operation on the second tape spool pair while the data operations are being performed.

Multi-spool tape recording apparatus

An apparatus, in accordance with one approach, includes a receiving area configured to receive a plurality of tape spool pairs. A drive mechanism is configured to selectively drive the tape spool pairs. A magnetic head configured to perform data operations on magnetic recording tapes of the tape spool pairs is also present. A positioning mechanism is configured to selectively align the magnetic head to a selected one of the tape spool pairs. An engagement mechanism is configured to create a relative movement between the magnetic head and the magnetic recording tape of the selected tape spool pair for engaging the magnetic recording tape with the magnetic head.

An apparatus for burnishing media, according to one embodiment, includes a first block with a media bearing surface having a plurality of channels and lands. The channels and lands alternate in a direction of media travel. Each of the lands has at least one skiving edge along a width thereof. The width of each land extends orthogonally to the direction of media travel. The apparatus also includes a mechanism for inducing a wrap angle of the media relative to media bearing surfaces of at least some of the lands. Each induced wrap angle is greater than zero degrees. An apparatus for burnishing media according to another embodiment includes channels having widths that are less than a width of the media.

Flexible media burnishing apparatus and method

A product such as a magnetic recording tape, according to one embodiment, includes a flexible magnetic media having a substrate, a magnetic recording layer having cobalt therein, and an at least partially polycrystalline coating above the magnetic recording layer. A product according to another embodiment includes a flexible magnetic media having a substrate, a magnetic recording layer having cobalt therein, and coating above the magnetic recording layer. The coating includes a ceramic material.

Durable coating for magnetic tape recording media

Determining quality metrics of recorded data on a magnetic recording medium. Each of two or more read element arrays include one or more read elements, each including a sensor. Each array differs from the other arrays in one or more construction characteristics such that each array has a different sensitivity to one or more characteristics of magnetic transitions recorded on a magnetic recording medium. Each array produces respective electrical signals that are characteristic of magnetic transitions recorded on a magnetic recording medium. A computer receives information from the electrical signals and analyzes the signal information to determine one or more values associated with one or more quality metrics of the magnetic transitions.

Magnetic storage device with multiple read element arrays to determine quality of recorded data

A method according to one embodiment includes receiving a tape cartridge at an apparatus having a plurality of modules configured to at least read data stored on a magnetic recording tape of the tape cartridge, each of the modules having an array of readers. One module is configured to read data on a magnetic recording tape which none of the other modules can read. The method further includes determining at least one of a format of the magnetic recording tape and a format of the tape cartridge, and activating at least one of the modules to read data stored on the magnetic recording tape in response to determining the at least one of the format of the magnetic recording tape and a format of the tape cartridge.

Multi-format read drive

An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a plurality of modules configured to at least read data stored on a magnetic recording tape, each of the modules having an array of readers. One module is configured to read data on a magnetic recording tape which none of the other modules can read. An apparatus according to another embodiment includes a first module configured to at least read data stored on a magnetic recording tape in a first range of formats, and at least a second module configured to at least read data stored on a magnetic recording tape in at least a second range of formats. The first range of formats does not include a format that is in the second range of formats. All of the modules are aligned along a tape travel direction.

A method for encapsulating a magnetic recording head including coating at least a portion of a magnetic recording head containing a recording gap with a first layer of at least one coating material, including silicon nitride, the first layer of at least one coating material having a first removal rate, coating at least a portion of the magnetic recording head containing a recording gap and coated with the first layer of at least one coating material with a second layer of at least one coating material, including aluminum oxide, the second layer of at least one coating material having a second removal rate higher than the first removal rate, and removing at least a portion of the second layer of at least one coating material via a removal process, including chemical-mechanical polishing, lapping, or vacuum processing to at least partially planarize the surface of the recording gap.

Magnetic recording head coating and method

An asperity data storage system wherein asperities are used to represent stored data. The asperity data storage system includes an asperity transducer that thermally interacts with a data storage medium adapted to store an information-encoded pattern of asperities thereon, such as a rotatable disk, a streamable tape, or a fixed medium. A drive system produces relative motion between the data storage medium and the asperity transducer, while electrical signals corresponding to the asperities are processed as stored information. A positional relationship can be maintained between the asperity transducer and the data storage medium using the asperities on the data storage medium for reference. A related asperity data storage method and the asperity data storage medium itself are further disclosed.
