Computer implemented systems and methods for providing dynamic lighting through lighting fixtures are provided herein. In one aspect, one or more characteristics of light provided from a lighting fixture or a plurality of lighting fixtures changes over time to shape the environment of an indoor space according to simulated environment illumination parameters and general illumination parameters. Dynamic lighting may improve the health or wellbeing of individuals in an indoor space, for example, by simulating an outdoor environment to reduce stress, by providing circadian entrainment to improve sleep and wakefulness, or the like. Other aspects of the present disclosure enable lighting fixtures to provide light that is synchronized with one or more other devices that simulate an environment and shape the environment of an indoor space.

Lighting diffuser

A lighting system includes an upper housing supporting a light engine, and a diffuser coupled to the upper housing. The diffuser may be monolithic, i.e. formed of a single material as a single piece without joints or seams where separate components are joined. The monolithic diffuser may be formed by an additive manufacturing process, for example 3D printing. The diffuser may couple to the upper housing with a tool-less connection. The portion of the tool-less connection defined by the diffuser may be formed by the additive manufacturing process. The lighting system may further include a lens coupled to the diffuser opposite the upper housing with a lens retaining ring. The lens retaining ring may be formed with an additive manufacturing process, and may define an annular snap-fit with the diffuser.

Systems and methods for providing dynamic lighting are provided. In an exemplary aspect, one or more characteristics of light provided from a lighting device or a group of lighting devices changes over time to shape the environment of an indoor space according to dynamic lighting instructions. Dynamic lighting may improve the health or wellbeing of individuals in an indoor space, for example, by simulating an outdoor environment to reduce stress, by providing circadian entrainment to improve sleep and wakefulness, or the like. Other aspects of the present disclosure enable lighting devices to provide light that is synchronized with one or more other devices and does not significantly drift over time so that the lighting devices can provide seamless dynamic lighting experiences that shape the environment of an indoor space.

An indirect troffer. Embodiments of the present invention provide a troffer-style fixture that is particularly well-suited for use with solid state light sources, such as LEDs. The troffer comprises a light engine unit that is surrounded on its perimeter by a reflective pan. A back reflector defines a reflective interior surface of the light engine. To facilitate thermal dissipation, a heat sink is disposed proximate to the back reflector. A portion of the heat sink is exposed to the ambient room environment while another portion functions as a mount surface for the light sources that faces the back reflector. One or more light sources disposed along the heat sink mount surface emit light into an interior cavity where it can be mixed and/or shaped prior to emission. In some embodiments, one or more lens plates extend from the heat sink out to the back reflector.

Troffer-style fixture

A luminaire comprises a frame and a plurality of optical waveguides retained by the frame. The optical waveguides bound a cavity, and each comprises: a top end and a bottom end opposite the top end; a coupling portion disposed at the top end; an inner side facing the cavity; and an outer side opposite the inner side. The inner and outer sides are disposed between the top and bottom ends. The luminaire further comprises at least one light emitting diode (LED) associated with each optical waveguide. Each of the LEDs are disposed opposite, and configured to direct light into, the coupling portion of the associated optical waveguide. Each optical waveguide is configured to receive the light via the coupling portion and emit the light primarily from the outer side.

A modular troffer-style fixture that is well-suited for use with solid state light sources, such as LEDs, to provide a surface ambient light (SAL). The fixture comprises two structural components: a housing subassembly and a lighting subassembly. These two subassemblies may be removably attached to operate as a singular fixture. Many different lighting subassemblies may be compatible with a single housing subassembly and vice versa. The housing subassembly comprises a body that is mountable to an external structure. The lighting subassembly comprises the light sources and optical elements that tailor the light to achieve a particular profile. Electronics necessary to power and control the light sources may be disposed in the housing subassembly, the lighting subassembly, or both. Various mount mechanisms may be used to attach the fixture to a surface such as a ceiling or a wall. Multiple fixtures can be connected serially to provide an extended continuous fixture.
