A delayed opening fluid sampling tool comprises a body having three chambers and a port defined therein. The tool also comprises a metering device which is disposed in the body between two of the chambers, one of which chambers is for holding a metering fluid and the other of which is for receiving fluid which is transferred through the metering device. The tool further comprises a valve which is disposed in the body between the port and the remaining chamber, which remaining chamber is for receiving a well fluid sample. The valve is moved relative to the body in response to pressure acting on the valve through the port. Only after a predetermined time delay after the pressure begins moving the valve is the valve positioned to communicate the port with the sample-receiving chamber.

Delayed opening fluid sampler

An above packer perforate, test and sample tool for use in obtaining a sample of fluid from a formation reservoir in a well. The apparatus includes a sampler and an actuator cylinder positioned above a packer and a valve body below the packer. An operating mandrel opens a valve below the packer to flow the fluid from a well annulus defined below the packer to a sampling chamber in the sampler above the packer. The operating mandrel is moved in response to a pressure differential between the pressure in the well annulus above the packer and a pressure in the tool. In another embodiment, a second packer may be positioned below the first packer to sealingly engage the well bore below the well formation. A method of sampling fluid from a well formation is also disclosed.

Above packer perforate, test and sample tool and method of use

A pressure limiter for use with a positive displacement pump and an inflatable packer. The pressure limiter includes an outer housing with an inner mandrel disposed therein. Slidably disposed between the mandrel and housing is a generally annular piston. A spring biases the piston toward a closed position. Packer pressure acts upwardly on the piston tending to move it to an open position in which pump discharge pressure is relieved to a well annulus. A check valve prevents premature relief of pressure of the packer. Once the piston is in an open position, packer pressure will maintain it in the open position until pressure is relieved from the packer.

Pressure limiter for a downhole pump and testing apparatus

A retrievable gravel packer and retrieving tool therefor. The gravel packer includes an inner mandrel assembly attached to an operating tool by a left-hand threaded connection. The packer is set without rotation by the operating tool to move a pusher sleeve downwardly with respect to the mandrel, compressing a packer element and setting slips into engagement with a well bore. A ratchet prevents the pusher sleeve assembly from moving upwardly with respect to the mandrel. The packer may be retrieved by the retrieving tool which has a lower collet engagable with a releasing mandrel in the packer. After releasing collets held by the releasing mandrel, the inner mandrel of the packer is released so that the packer element and slips engaged by the mandrel are disengaged from the well bore. An upper collet in the retrieving tool engages the left-hand thread in the packer mandrel so that the packer and retrieving tool may be raised out of the well bore. If the packer becomes jammed and cannot be retrieved in this manner, the retrieving tool may be further raised so that the lower collet in the retrieving tool is released from the releasing mandrel in the packer. The packer includes anti-rotation pins so that it can be easily milled out of the well bore.

The present invention comprises a rapid cycle tester valve operable in response to annulus pressure. The tester valve includes a valve ball rotatable between open and closed positions through an operating mechanism which includes a ball and slot ratchet mechanism for selectively transmitting operating movement from a pressure responsive slidable valve housing through a mandrel assembly. The valve housing employs back to back check valves disposed in a longitudinal valve passage to create pressure differentials to move the valve housing in response to annulus pressure increases and decreases.

A setting device for a gravel packing system includes a housing having a slurry supply passage, a fluid return passage and a gravel packing port disposed therein. A weight responsive return valve is operatively associated with the housing for communicating an upper portion of the return passage with a well annulus exterior of the housing in response to reciprocation of a work string to which the setting device is attached. A hydraulic setting piston is operatively associated with the housing for setting a liner hanger of the gravel packing system in response to a first increase in fluid pressure within the supply passage of the housing. A hydraulically actuated supply valve is operatively associated with the housing for communicating the gravel packing port with the supply passage in response to a second increase in fluid pressure in the supply passage. The supply valve includes a sliding supply valve sleeve having an open central passageway extending therethrough open at both the lower and upper end of the sleeve. A check valve is disposed in a lower portion of the housing below the supply valve for permitting flow return fluid upward therethrough and for preventing downward flow therethrough. The gravel packing system includes a liner hanger releasably connected to the setting device, and a liner valve connected to a lower end of the liner hanger.

Single zone gravel packing system

An annulus pressure responsive downhole tool includes a housing with an operating element disposed in the housing. The operating element is movable from a first element position to a second element position relative to the housing. A hydrostatic well annulus pressure referenced annulus pressure responsive first power piston is disposed in the housing and movable from a first to a second position thereof relative to the housing in response to an increase in well annulus pressure. A lower than hydrostatic well annulus pressure referenced annulus pressure responsive second power piston is disposed in the housing and is operatively associated with the operating element for permitting the operating element to move from its first element position to its second element position in response to movement of the second power piston from a first position to a second position thereof relative to the housing. A prevention device is operatively associated with the first and second power pistons for preventing the second power piston from moving to its second position until the first power piston has moved at least part way towards its second position.

Hydrostatic referenced safety-circulating valve

A retrievable well packer includes a packer mandrel with an expandable packing element disposed about the mandrel. Upper and lower shoes are received about the mandrel above and below the expandable packing element for compressibly engaging the packing element. A slip assembly is received about the mandrel for anchoring the packer within the well bore. Upper and lower wedges are received about the mandrel above and below the slip assembly for wedging the slip assembly radially outward upon longitudinal compression of the packing element. The mandrel is nonrotatably connected to each of the upper and lower shoes and upper and lower wedges for preventing rotation of those components relative to the mandrel in the event the packer must be milled out of a well bore. The mandrel is initially releasably longitudinally locked relative to the lower wedge by a releasing collet attached to a lower end of the mandrel and having radially outward extending lugs received within a groove of the lower wedge. A releasing sleeve is initially releasably held in a lower position to hold the lugs of the releasing collet in the groove of the lower wedge.

Retrievable well packer

The present invention comprises a retrievable gravel packer for circulation and squeeze type gravel packing. The gravel packer includes a compression-set packer element, a J-slot assembly to releasably maintain the gravel packer in an unset mode, a ratchet assembly to releasably lock the gravel packer in a set mode, an intake passage to receive fluid from a tubing string, a return passage to receive fluid from a gravel screen below the gravel packer, a circulation passage extending from the exterior of the gravel packer to intake passage, a closeable crossover assembly to receive fluid from the return passage; a first check valve to prevent back flow back to the intake passage from the interior of the interior of a gravel screen therebelow, a second check valve adapted to selectively open the intake passage to the circulation passage, and a check valve release for removing said second check valve means from the junction of the intake and circulation passages.

Gravel packer

The present invention comprises a weight-set single-zone gravel packer which may be retrieved from a gravel screen after gravel packing or, alternatively, left in place attached to the screen as a production packer. The gravel packer includes a compression-set packer element, a first J-slot assembly to releasably maintain the gravel packer in an unset mode, a ratchet assembly to releasably lock the gravel packer in a set mode, an intake passage to receive fluid from a tubing string, a return passage to receive fluid from the interior of a gravel screen below the gravel packer, a closeable crossover assembly to receive fluid from the return passage to the wellbore annulus above the gravel packer, a first check valve to prevent flow down to the gravel screen through the return passage, a second check valve adapted to selectively connect the intake passage with the gravel packer, and a second J-slot assembly for selectively disconnecting the tubing string from the gravel packer.

The present invention comprises a retrievable gravel packer for circulation and squeeze type gravel packing. The present invention relates to a weight-set single-zone gravel packer which may be left in place after gravel packing attached to the screen as a production packer. The gravel packer includes a compression-set packer element, ratchet means to releasably lock the gravel packer in a set mode, intake passage to receive fluid from a tubing string, a return passage to receive fluid from the interior of a gravel screen below the gravel packer; closeable crossover means to transmit fluid from the return passage to the wellbore annulus above the gravel packer; first check valve means to prevent flow down to the gravel screen through the return passage; and second check valve means adapted to selectively connect the return passage with the outside of the gravel packer; and J-slot means for selectively disconnecting the crossover means and tubing string from the gravel packer.

The present invention comprises a retrievable gravel packer especially adapted for gravel packing with a foam, for circulation and squeeze type gravel packing. The gravel packer includes a compression-set packer element, J-slot means to releasably maintain the gravel packer in an unset mode, ratchet means to releasably lock the gravel packer in a set mode, an intake passage to receive fluid from a tubing string, a return passage to receive fluid from a gravel screen below the gravel packer, a circulation passage extending from the exterior of the gravel packer to intake passage, closeable crossover means to receive fluid from the return passage, first valve means to prevent flow between the intake passage and the return passage, second valve means to prevent flow between the intake passage and the circulation passage, and valve actuation means for selectively opening and closing said first and second valve means.
