A magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetically soft underlayer having a plurality of cavities in a surface thereof, and a magnetic recording material in the cavities, wherein a surface of the magnetic recording material in the cavities is substantially coplanar with the surface of the soft underlayer. A recording system that includes the recording medium is also included.

Magnetic recording media with discrete tracks of magnetic material in a magnetically soft underlayer

The present invention relates to methods for forming textured surfaces in a polymeric surfaces. Moreover, the present invention relates to methods for forming textured surfaces in a polymeric surfaces and faithfully replicating the textured surfaces in the surfaces of sol-gel films on the surfaces of very hard materials, e.g., of glass, ceramic, or glass-ceramic substrates.

Method of replicating a textured surface

A method of manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium, comprises steps of: (a) providing a substrate of an amorphous thermoplastic polymer material having softening and glass transition temperatures as low as about 95&#xb0; C.; and (b) forming at least one stack of thin film layers atop at least one surface of the substrate, the at least one layer stack including at least one granular magnetic recording layer of perpendicular type, wherein oxides and/or nitrides provide physical de-coupling of adjacent magnetic grains; and wherein each of the thin film layers is formed by depositing at a substrate temperature not greater than about 70&#xb0; C., and the coercivity (H) of the resultant perpendicular magnetic recording medium is at least about 4,000 Oe.

High coercivity perpendicular magnetic recording media on polymer substrates

Magnetic recording media exhibiting high SNR and high thermal stability are produced by sputter depositing a magnetic alloy overlying a non-magnetic substrate, e.g., on an underlayer, heating to eliminate thermally unstable small grains thereby increasing the average grain size of the magnetic alloy layer but narrowing the grain size distribution, depositing a layer comprising a non-ferromagnetic element, and then heating to diffuse the non-ferromagnetic element into the grain boundaries of the heat treated magnetic alloy layer. Embodiments include heating to diffuse the non-ferromagnetic element leaving a layer comprising the non-ferromagnetic element, at a thickness up to about 3&#x212b;, on the magnetic alloy layer, with the amount of the non-ferromagnetic element diffused into the grain boundaries of the magnetic alloy layer gradually decreasing from the upper surface of the magnetic alloy layer toward the underlayer.

Magnetic recording media with high SNR and high thermal stability

A magnetic recording medium is formed with a distribution of servo-marks in the form of pits or indentations with an attendant reduction in potential corrosion and increased tribology. Embodiments providing a protective overcoat, e.g. containing carbon, over a magnetic recording medium having a servo-patterned substrate; applying a fluoropolyether comprising one or more acrylate groups on the protective overcoat by dip coating the magnetic recording medium in a solution of the fluoropolyether and polymerizing the fluoropolyether by ultraviolet radiation.

Planarization and corrosion protection of patterned magnetic media

Corrosion protection of magnetic recording media is achieved by providing a thin protective barrier layer comprising ruthenium on the magnetic layer. Embodiments include forming a corrosion barrier layer less than 10 &angst; of elemental ruthenium, a ruthenium oxide, a ruthenium alloy, a layer comprising mixed oxides of ruthenium and an alloying element, a composite of a ruthenium layer and a layer of ruthenium oxide or a composite of a ruthenium alloy layer and a layer of mixed oxides of ruthenium and an alloying element. A carbon containing an overcoat is then formed, as at a thickness of about 10 &angst; to 50 &angst;, on the corrosion protective layer.

Magnetic recording media with Ru corrosion barrier layer

Magnetic recording media exhibiting high SNR and high thermal stability are produced by sputter depositing a magnetic alloy overlying a non-magnetic substrate, e.g., on an underlayer, heating to eliminate thermally unstable small grains thereby increasing the average grain size of the magnetic alloy layer but narrowing the grain size distribution, depositing a layer comprising a non-ferromagnetic element, and then heating to diffuse the non-ferromagnetic element into the grain boundaries of the heat treated magnetic alloy layer. Embodiments include sputter depositing a magnetic alloy layer comprising Co and Pt on an underlayer, heating at a temperature of about 150&deg; C. to about 600&deg; C. to increase the average grain size to about 8 to about 10 nm, depositing a layer comprising Cr, Mn or Ta, at a thickness up to about 25 &angst;, e.g., up to about 10 &angst;, on the magnetic alloy layer and heating to diffuse the Cr, Mn or Ta into the grain boundaries of the magnetic alloy layer. Embodiments further include heating to diffuse the non-ferromagnetic element leaving a layer comprising the non-ferromagnetic element, at a thickness up to about 3 &angst;, on the magnetic alloy layer, with the amount of the non-ferromagnetic element diffused into the grain boundaries of the magnetic alloy layer gradually decreasing from the upper surface of the magnetic alloy layer toward the underlayer.

Method of manufacturing magnetic recording media with high SNR and high thermal stability

Corrosion resistant magnetic thin film media are fabricated using a CoCr magnetic layer having a stabilized protective chromium oxide film thereon. Stabilization of the protective chromium oxide film is achieved by incorporating a stabilizing element, such as Mo, V, Mn, Nb, Ni or Si, in the magnetic layer, thereby enabling elimination of the protective overcoat, e.g., C-containing protective overcoat, or forming the protective overcoat at a significantly low thickness of less than about 20 &angst;, e.g., up to about 1 &angst;. Embodiments include forming a magnetic layer comprising Co and Cr on an underlayer, and then forming a thin magnetic layer containing Co and Cr with the chromium oxide stabilizing element thereon. Embodiments further include introducing the chromium oxide stabilizing element by diffusion or ion implantation into a sputter deposited Co&mdash;Cr magnetic alloy layer.
