An improved armor piercing and pyrotechnic projectile for use in .50&#x2033; military caliber rounds. Such projectiles contain a core, jacket, a base and a hollow nose housing pyrotechnic mixtures composed of sodium periodate and magnalium. The improved projectiles exhibit increased luminosity, and are non-toxic, safer, and environmentally benign compared to current state-of-the-art projectiles.

Armor piercing incendiary projectile

The present invention is a flare illuminant composition, useful in hand-held signals, which composition is environmentally friendly and economical, containing a commercially available, aromatic, high energy, amine-based organic compound, 5-aminotetrazole, in place of the conventional and toxic KClO, or, for the known alternative to KClO, expensive, strontium bis-(1-methyl-5-nitriminotetrazolate)monohydrate.

Environmentally friendly flare illuminant composition

A perchlorate-free solid pyrotechnic flash bang composition is disclosed, which comprises an oxidizer component selected from the group comprising potassium nitrate, strontium nitrate, and basic copper nitrate and combinations thereof, a metallic fuel component selected from the group comprising aluminum, magnesium, magnesium-aluminum alloys, silicon, zirconium, and combinations thereof, and a non-metallic fuel component comprising sulfur. The flash bang pyrotechnic composition may also further comprise a ballistic accelerant component, a pH stabilizer, and a free flow/anti-caking component.

Perchlorate free flash bang compositions for pyrotechnic training rounds

An explosive primer responsive to optical energy is constructed from an energetic composition optically coupled to an optical power source by a pigtailed optical fiber. The pigtailed portion of the optical fiber is positioned proximate to the energetic composition such that optical power emitted preferably by a laser diode initiates the detonation of the energetic composition thereby further initiating an additional, sympathetic detonation.

Laser primer

A solid pyrotechnic composition having a flame temperature and exhibiting ballistic performance comparable to that of black powder, but which does not contain charcoal or sulfur, is provided, as is a method for making such composition. A solid pyrotechnic composition, and method for making the same, which has a flame temperature and exhibits ballistic performance comparable to that of boron/potassium nitrate and that is preferably free of boron is also provided.

Moisture-resistant black powder substitute compositions

An inertial igniter including: a first member having a wall and internal cavity; a second member slidable in the internal cavity, a striker disposed thereon and a first concave portion; a third member slidable on an exterior surface of the wall, a second concave portion; biasing springs for biasing the first and second members in a direction opposite an acceleration; locking balls in the first and second concave portions for preventing movement of the second and third members when the acceleration time profile is below a predetermined threshold; and a percussion cap primer on the first member; wherein when the acceleration time profile is greater than the predetermined threshold the locking balls are released from the concave portions to first permit relative movement of the third member with the first member and after a time delay to permit relative movement of the second member with the first member.

Axially compact mechanical igniter for thermal batteries and the like

Storage-stable metal-fueled pyrotechnics and methods for manufacturing such compositions are provided. These are manufactured by granulating a mixture of liquid cyclohexane, powdered metal fuel, optional Teflon&reg; powder, and at least one ethylene and vinyl acetate co-polymer, together to form a storage stable powdered metal fuel effectively coated with ethylene and vinyl acetate co-polymer. This provides pyrotechnics with superior resistance to degradation induced by atmospheric moisture, and having other improved properties. The powdered metal fuel includes, for example, powdered magnesium.
