A capacitor array for filter connectors includes a stamped and formed ground resilient metal plate. Integral tines are provided to establish a solderless electrical connection between the plate and a connector shell. The filter elements are discoidal capacitors having cylindrical inner and outer electrode portions. The filter assembly is completed by soldering the outer electrode portions to the ground plate, while a solderless electrical connection between the inner electrodes and the feedthrough contacts of a connector is established by providing compliant sections on the contacts. A pi filter array is formed using two of the ground plates.

A transient suppression component includes a lead assembly adapted to permit in-line installation in a connector contact. One lead surrounds the other and is cylindrical for connection to the aperture tines of a connector ground plate. The other lead carries electrical signals between mating portions of the connector contact assembly. A transient suppression component body is connected between the feedthrough lead and the cylindrical ground lead. The feedthrough lead can be made from a single stamped piece of metal formed to include a component mounting section which substantially encloses the component.

A transient suppression connector includes a plurality of contacts each of which carries both a negatively and a positively biased diode. The connector also includes negative and positive bias voltage input pins and a grounding arrangement including a respective common diode for the negatively and the positively biased contact diodes.

A coupling ring 10 for connecting together two halves of an electrical connector assembly includes means integral with the coupling ring for mounting the coupling ring 10 to a connector housing 20. The integral mounting means includes a plurality of resiliently deflectable fingers 11, each having an annular shoulder 12 thereon that mates with a groove 21 in the connector housing so that the coupling ring 10 may be rotatably mounted to a housing 20 of an electrical connector. A skirt 14, integral with the coupling ring 10 protects the fingers 11.

A plurality of integrally molded fingers (21) extend outwardly and forwardly from the rear portion of a housing (20) to captivate an annular shoulder (11) of a coupling member (10) between the fingers (21) and an annular shoulder (22) on a housing (20).

The invention is a one piece molded electrical connector insert that snaps in to a connector housing without the need for additional mounting members or chemical bonding. The insert includes a plurality of resiliently and radially deflectable fingers 21 disposed around the outside of the insert and a second plurality of resiliently and axially deflectable fingers 22 also disposed on the outside of the insert 20 and adjacent to first plurality of fingers 21. The radial fingers 21 and axial fingers 22 completely fill a groove 15 in the inside of a connector housing 10 to prevent axial movement of the insert once it is mounted in the connector housing 10.

The invention is a plastic connector assembly characterized by a metal washer 10b, located between a wave washer 30 and the shoulder 21 of the connector housing 20. The metal washer 10 is further characterized by at least one projection 11 or 12 thereon which prevents relative motion between the metal washer 10b and the housing shoulder 21. This reduces the wear on the shoulder of the housing. Similarly to reduce wear on the shoulder in the coupling ring a second metal washer 10a may be placed on the other side of the wave washer 30 to accomplish the same purpose.

The invention is an electrical connector assembly characterized by a plurality of resiliently deflectable fingers (11) which extend between a shoulder 12 in the coupling ring and a shoulder 22 of the housing 20 to provide a bias between the coupling ring 10 and the housing 20 when the coupling ring 10 is completely threaded onto another connector housing. The fingers 11 may be integrally molded into either the coupling ring or the housing shoulder eliminating the need for an extra biasing member. The bias increases the force of friction on the threads in the coupling ring when it is fully mated to retard unwanted rotation, i.e., uncoupling.

This invention provides a single core pin for use with a mold that may be rearranged to provide a plurality of molded configurations. The core pin is characterized by a plurality of arcuate segments 11 arranged to make up a cylindrical core pin 10. On at least one of the arcuate segments 11 there is along the outer surface thereof at least one radial projection 12 extending a predetermined axial distance along the surface.

An electrical contact, for use in pin and socket type connectors, is fabricated as a unitary, composite body of metal and plastic. The contact (10) comprises a tubular body (12) having a wire receiving end (16) and a mating end (14). The composite tubular body (12) includes a sleeve (18) of wire cloth which is impregnated to form multiple islands (32) of plastic between the wires (34) on the internal surface and a plastic jacket (24) on the external surface. The contact fingers (22) are surrounded by a plastic hood (40) which provides a closed entry (42) for guiding a mating pin contact (44). The socket contact (10) is fabricated by stamping wire cloth to form a sleeve blank (18') and rolling the blank to form the sleeve (18). The sleeve (18) is fitted with core members (60) and (62) and placed in a mold cavity for injection molding of the plastic.

Electrical contact and method for making same

One piece socket (1) or pin type (37) electrical contacts are stamped from a sheet of resilient, electrically conductive material and rolled into a tubular body (3) having a center section (11, 39) of enlarged diameter which functions as a C spring and is radially compressed to insert or remove the contact from either the front or rear of a bore (33, 41) in a connector (31, 45). An annular groove (17, 47) in the center section (11, 39) engages a retention ring (35, 49) in the bore (33, 41) to lock the contact (1, 37) in place and the center section (11, 39) bears against the wall of the bore (33, 41) to stabilize the connection. The resilient fingers (19) forming the socket type contact (1) taper inward and then flare outward to form a funnel (21) which guides the pin (53) of a mating pin type contact (37) into a narrow neck (55) in the socket where it is wiped clean and firmly gripped. The contacts (1, 37) may be provided with conventional terminations or with a self-terminating wire well having tines (25) and ribs (27) which cooperate to grip a stripped or unstripped wire which is first longitudinally pushed into and then pulled back toward the wire receiving end of the contact (1, 37).

One piece socket type electrical contacts

An electrical contact 47 includes a tubular liner 1 stamped and rolled from a sheet of an electrically conductive material with an annular connector retention recess 13 provided in the external surface thereof between a mating end and a wire receiving end. One or more sleeves 21, 27 are telescoped over the liner 1 with at least one sleeve deformed in place into the annular recess 13. One of the sleeves 21 can be axially aligned preparatory to deforming it into the recess by an internal projection 25 which engages an annular groove 19 on the liner 1. A second sleeve can be axially aligned by lancing it to the liner 1 and by prick-punching the sleeve.
