A friction disk may comprise a first wear surface formed from a carbon fiber-carbon matrix composite material. A wear plug may be located in an opening defined by the carbon fiber-carbon matrix composite material. The wear plug may extend axially from the wear surface. The wear plug may comprise a rod or a particulate.

A method of making a brake assembly using recycled friction disks may comprise removing a first friction disk from a worn brake assembly, removing a portion of the first friction disk to reduce a thickness of the first friction disk, and incorporating a previously unused friction disk and the first friction disk into a brake assembly comprising unworn rotor disks made of a first material. The previously unused friction disk and the first friction disk may comprise a second material different from the first material. The thickness of the first friction disk may be different from a thickness of the previously unused friction disk.

A wheel assembly includes an inboard wheel portion having a rim and a disk. A radially inward surface of the rim and an inboard surface of the disk define a wheel well cavity configured to house a brake assembly. The wheel assembly also includes a torque bar (e.g., a torque bar of the brake assembly) mounted to the inboard wheel portion. Further, the wheel assembly includes a retainer coupled to the torque bar and disposed radially between the torque bar and the radially inward surface of the rim of the inboard wheel portion. The retainer includes a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a body extending between the first end and the second end. The body includes opposing longitudinal sides configured to respectively engage and retain a respective heat shield segment of a segmented annular heat shield.

A heat shield assembly includes a first heat shield segment having a first end and a second end spaced from the first end, and a heat shield retainer including a radial extension, wherein a torque bar aperture extends through the radial extension, the torque bar aperture configured to receive a torque bar. The heat shield retainer is secured from radial movement via the radial extension.

A friction disk may comprise a friction disk core and a wear liner coupled to the friction disk core. A depression may be formed in a surface of the friction disk core. The wear liner may comprise a protrusion extending from a non-wear surface of the wear liner. The protrusion may be positioned within the depression of the friction disk core.

Systems disclosed herein may be useful for use in a disk brake system. In this regard, a disk brake system may comprise a stator thickness that is less than 15% greater than an end plate thickness and/or pressure plate thickness. Additionally, a disk brake system may further comprise a combination of split friction disks comprising a damping feature and solid friction disks. These split friction disks and/or solid friction disks may be arranged together in any suitable pattern or position within the disk brake system.

A friction device such as an aircraft wheel and brake assembly having a wheel member journaled for rotation on a fixed member, which fixed member supports a torque tube member. A plurality of primary friction disks are carried by splines on the wheel member while a plurality of secondary friction disks are carried by splines on the torque tube member with such secondary disks interleaved with the primary friction disks for axial movement towards one end of the torque tube. An actuator, such as a plurality of pistons, is mounted on the fixed member to urge all the friction disks into frictional engagement with each other and against a stationary disk on the one end of the torque tube. A rigid disk is positioned between the actuator and the pluralities of friction disks, and acts as a pressure plate. The rigid disk may be formed of carbon or ceramic composite material.

Aircraft brake

A friction brake includes a friction disk assembly having high dynamic stability against undesired vibration during a braking event. The friction disk assembly comprises an annular structural carrier of carbon and/or ceramic or other suitable structual material, preferably a fiber reinforced composite material, including a plurality of recessed regions and torque drive notches spaced around its circumferential direction, and a friction lining of carbon and/or ceramic or other suitable structural material, preferably a fiber reinforced composite material, mounted on the carrier, the friction lining having a flat wear (rubbing) face and an obverse face including raised areas corresponding to and matingly engaging the recessed regions of the carrier to prevent rotation of the lining relative to the carrier. The lining may be formed of of virgin or recycled carbon, ceramic or other suitable friction material. The lining may be retained to the carrier by mechanical fasteners such as rivets or clips. The assembly may be refurbished by simple replacement of the worn lining without need of machining. The carrier and the lining are preferably formed as unitary annular members.

A friction disk assembly comprises an annular structural carrier including a plurality of recessed and/or raised regions and torque drive notches spaced around its circumferential direction, and a segmented friction lining mounted on the carrier. Each segment of the friction lining comprises a clamshell-shaped friction cup including a pair of cup members containing a puck of friction material, each pair of cup members being joined by a deformable strap and together defining a U-shaped configuration. The obverse side of each cup member includes projections and/or depressed areas that are complementary in size, shape and location to the recessed and/or raised regions of the associated carrier operatively engaged therewith to prevent movement of the lining relative to the carrier during a braking event. The carrier may be formed of steel or other suitable structural material. The lining may be formed of suitable friction material, e.g. sintered metal. The lining may be retained to the carrier by rivets that pass through lugs extending from the cup members. The friction pucks are provided with a structural casing configured to engage the recessed and/or raised regions of the carrier. The assembly may be refurbished by simple replacement of the worn lining together with its associated structural casing.
