To perform an inter-technology handoff, an indicator in a service request message is received by a mobile switching center (MSC). The indicator is to indicate to the MSC that an inter-technology handoff from a packet-data wireless access network to a circuit wireless access network has been requested. The behavior of the MSC is modified in response to the indicator to reduce the communication silence during the inter-technology handoff.

Reducing communication silence when performing inter-technology handoff

An Anchor Mobile Switching Center emulation (MSCe) and a Target MSCe are described herein that take part in an intersystem handoff of a Mobile Station (MS) which is in communication with a B-party. Upon the MS establishing a connection with the Target MSCe, the Anchor MSCe may perform SDP offer/answer exchange between the Target network and the B-Party for the purpose of codec renegotiation to correct a transcoding incompatibility or to enhance the voice bearer path characteristics or to minimize the number of transcodings in the bearer path, between the two parties. The Anchor MSCe and the Target MSCe both support Advanced Legacy Mobile Station Domain (ALMSD) implying that only the SIP transport is used for intersystem handoff communications.

Methods for multiple-termination routing in a wireless network environment that includes an Internet Protocol ('IP') core are described herein. One method includes receiving a call delivery request. The call delivery request includes a called number. The call features associated with the called number are determined. A determination is made whether the call features include multiple-termination routing information for a plurality of potential terminating devices. When the call features include the multiple-termination routing information including at least one termination to be routed utilizing Session Initiation Protocol ('SIP'), a call setup is initiated to each of the plurality of potential terminating devices.

Multiple-termination routing in a wireless network environment with an internet protocol core

A system, method, and call processing component for controlling an order of call processing among a plurality of call processing components. Each call processing component, upon receiving a call request when system resources are not available to process the requested call, creates a real queue entry in its call processing queue and sends a call-queued notification to all other call processing components in the system. The other call processing components in the telecommunication system then create a shadow queue entry in their respective call processing queues as a placeholder for the requested call. When system resources become available and the requested call is next in the queue, the call processing component that received the request de-queues and processes the requested call, and sends a call de-queued notification to the other call processing components. In response, each of the other call processing components removes the placeholder queue entry for the requested call from each call processing component's call processing queue.

Wireless priority service within a distributed call processing architecture

In order to ameliorate the overload at an overloaded network node that is discarding some of the SMSs it is receiving, when a node is overloaded with received SMSs, it sends a message to the nodes from which it is receiving SMSs of that fact and includes a parameter indicating the extent to which it is overloaded. That parameter, for instance, may be the percentage of SMSs that it is receiving that are being discarded. With this information, the sending node can determine a percentage of the pending SMSs during such conditions that will help remove the overloaded node from the overload condition more quickly. Furthermore, the network protocol may be adapted to include a priority parameter in SMSs. Then, when an SMS sending node knows that a node to which it is sending SMSs is overloaded, the sending node may decide which SMSs to send to the overloaded node based on such priority information.

Method and apparatus for SMS termination overload protection

An entity of a wireless telecommunications network having a pool of Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) and a Home Location Register (HLR). The entity includes a network interface which sends pages to mobiles associated with a failed MSC of the pool of MSC's and experiencing termination isolation and receives responses to the pages from at least some of the mobiles. The entity includes a processing unit which produces a registration having updated location information for each response received by the network interface, the registration sent from the network interface to the HLR to end each mobile's termination isolation for which a response was received by the network interface. A network element may provide communications with a wireless communications network including a plurality of pooled mobile switching centers coupled to a base station controller so that each of the plurality of pooled mobile switching centers is configured to control communications with respective wireless terminals communicating through the base station controller. Operations of the network element may include transmitting a ping message from the network element to a primary pooled mobile switching center of the plurality of pooled mobile switching centers. Responsive to receipt of a ping response message at the network element from the primary pooled mobile switching center, a communication may be transmitted from the network element to the primary pooled mobile switching center. Responsive to non-receipt of a ping response message at the network element from the primary pooled mobile switching center, the communication may be transmitted from the network element to a secondary pooled mobile switching center of the plurality of pooled mobile switching centers.

A system and a method in a wireless network utilizing session initiation protocol (SIP) for call control. The SIP payload (SDP) contains a list of voice codecs to coordinate the selection of voice bearer resources (between a calling party and a called party) such that the number of transcoders in the voice bearer path is minimized. An additional aspect of the embodiment of the present invention includes a serving MSCe that is operable to determine whether to initiate or discontinue ringback to the calling party. If ring back is to be initiated, ringback can be initiated from a Serving MGW controlled by the serving MSCe. The call negotiation process according to the described embodiment of the invention eliminates the requirement for any transcoding in specific situations to result in the number of transcoders used in the voice bearer path to be reduced to 0 (TrFO, Transcoder Free Operation) or to 1 (RTO, remote transmitter operation).

Call origination in a CDMA legacy MS domain using SIP

Provided is a method for multiple-termination routing in a wireless network environment that includes an Internet Protocol ('IP') core. The method includes receiving a call delivery request. The call delivery request is based upon intelligent network protocols and includes a called number. The call features associated with the called number are retrieved, a determination is made whether the call features include multiple-termination routing information for a plurality of potential terminating devices, wherein at least one termination to be routed utilizes Session Initiation Protocol. When the call features include the multiple-termination routing information, call setups are initiated to each of the plurality of potential terminating devices. Upon detecting a first potential terminating device to complete one of the plurality of initiated call setups, any remaining initiated call setup or setups are released. In another aspect, the call setups are initiated consecutively to each of the plurality of potential-terminating devices, in an order designated in the multiple-termination routing information. Upon detecting a first potential terminating device to complete the call setup, foregoing initiation of a subsequent call setup to the remaining potential terminating devices.

A system and a method in a wireless network utilizing session initiation protocol (SIP) for call control. Call delivery in a CDMA legacy MS domain for SIP call origination

Call setup in a wireless communication network that includes a circuit fabric and a packet fabric. The originating MSCe receives an origination message including a call termination identifier, and a predictive bearer path matching mode is determined. When the originating MSCe is in a first predictive bearer path matching mode, the originating MSC generates a bearer resource preference list based upon the termination identifier. The bearer resource preference list includes a predetermined priority order of a plurality of bearer path resource identifiers including at least one of a packet bearer resource identifier and a circuit bearer resource identifier. When the originating MSCe is in a second predictive bearer path matching mode, the MSCe generates a bearer resource preference list to indicate whether the originating MSCe couples to a packet bearer resource or a trunk bearer resource. The originating MSCe sends, in response to the origination message, the bearer resource preference list to an originating base station controller (BSC). The originating BSC matches an available bearer path resource of the originating BSC based upon the bearer resource preference list.
