A parent bore cylinder block of an internal combustion, opposed-piston engine includes cooling passages that are formed using a 3-D printed casting core. The casting core can include portions that are ceramic. The parent bore cylinder block can include multiple cylinders, each cylinder with cooling passages and turbulence inducing features in those cooling passages, particularly surrounding the central portions of the cylinders.

A main bearing cap construction far a dual-crankshaft, opposed-piston engine has two sets of bolts in a cross-bolted configuration. In a dual-crankshaft opposed-piston engine with at least four main bearings, at least one of the main bearings will have a cap with two sets of bolts in a cross-bolted configuration. In addition to having a cross-bolted configuration, the main bearing cap configuration can have flanges to receive blind bolts and/or additional surface area to interface with the cylinder block.

A camshaft drive system for an internal combustion engine includes a drive sprocket fixed upon a crankshaft of the engine and a driven sprocket fixed upon a camshaft of the engine. A flexible power transmission element extends between the drive sprocket and driven sprocket. A tensioning device for the flexible power transmission element includes a linear actuator and a number of movable contactors for engaging and tensioning both the slack side and the tight side of the power transmission element, such that proper phasing of the camshaft with respect to the crankshaft is maintained.

Variable compression ratio connecting rods

An intake system for an internal combustion engine wherein an intake conduit (16) within a cylinder head (14) is configured to receive a vane control module (24). The vane control module (24) includes a vane (34) mounted within an airflow conduit (30). An actuator (36) pivots the vane (34) to different positions depending upon engine operating conditions. Under high load engine operating conditions, with the vane (34) in a fully retracted position, minimum restriction to the fluid flow is achieved, and in-cylinder tumble flow is created due to the shape and orientation of the vane 34. Under low load engine operating conditions, with the vane (34) in an extended position, the vane (34) causes a redirection of the fluid in order to create a swirl flow pattern in the cylinder (12).
