Methods for removing anions from an aqueous solution include contacting the aqueous solution with an initial organic phase composition in a primary stage to form a first mixture, the initial organic phase composition including a quaternary amine and a weak organic acid; separating a nitrate-depleted raffinate from the first mixture; mixing the remaining organic phase (now containing nitrate) with a first basic solution to obtain a second mixture; separating an aqueous phase sulfate-containing scrub solution from the second mixture; mixing the remaining organic phase with a second basic solution to form a third mixture; and separating the third mixture into an aqueous phase nitrate-rich solution and a secondary organic phase composition. The secondary organic phase composition can be recycled. The raffinate, the sulfate-containing scrub solution, and the nitrate-rich solution can then be further processed.

The preparation of concentrated solutions of oxime metal extractants, such as aldoximes and ketoximes, or mixtures of aldoxime and ketoxime, and the use thereof in formulating or preparing extraction reagent compositions for use in an extractant organic phase in a process of extracting metals from aqueous solutions containing metal values; and in particular, to concentrates which are solutions of individual ketoxime or aldoxime or mixtures of water-insoluble hydroxy aldoximes and ketoximes, in varying ratios by weight of 1:100 aldoxime to ketoxime, or conversely, 100:1 ketoxime to aldoxime, in water-immiscible hydrocarbon solvents or equilibrium modifiers. The invention also provides for maintaining stability of concentrates determined by accelerating rate calorimetry to define the ranges of oxime concentration and volume whereby the concentrate will be a stable, flowable, pourable and pumpable concentrate which can be safely stored long term. The extraction compositions may also optionally contain equilibrium modifiers or kinetic additives.

The recovery of nickel from aqueous ammoniacal solutions containing nickel values by extraction of the nickel values therefrom with an organic solution containing an oxime extractant and an equilibrium modifier followed by stripping of the nickel values from the organic solution by a concentrated aqueous ammoniacal solution from which the nickel can then be recovered. The use of the equilibrium modifier and the concentrated ammonia stripping solution provides advantages in that (1) there is an increase in the nickel transfer of the reagent, (2) the strip solution can be built to a higher nickel concentration giving a lower volume nickel containing solution for further processing and (3) a lesser number of stripping stages are required.
