An electronic device such as an HVAC controller that accounts for internal heating in determining an environmental condition such as temperature or humidity in the space surrounding the HVAC controller. The HVAC controller may calculate a transient heat rise value that is based upon a powered time period and a first order time lag, especially during a time period before which the HVAC controller reaches a steady state temperature condition.

A process for performing real-time cascade control for use in controllers. An adaptive process module uses an algorithm to set parameters during system operation to attain the best possible control performance, while providing an easier-to-use system for the user. The algorithm uses a novel adaptive technique to intelligently adjust the minimum and maximum allowable controlled-variable set point limits, under varying load conditions.

The performance of an HVAC system in a building is monitored by connecting a thermostat to an alarm system which is equipped to provide notification of alarm conditions through telecommunication or other direct means to some responsible entity. The alarm system access to telecommunications is employed to forward indicators of HVAC fault to predetermined offsite locations from where corrective action can be provided. The system includes a presumed fault condition processor which employs data from the thermostat to indicate to the alarm system that notification should take place.

A method and system for improving indoor air quality by controlling the circulation of air by a system fan of a conventional environmental control system in order to achieve a minimum circulation cycle. The method and system prevent nuisance short cycling of the system fan by extending the circulation cycle when the method and system predict the system fan will be activated by the environmental control system for heating or cooling shortly after the termination of the controlled circulation.

A control system and method for providing a nonlinear response for a single input-single output system. A system output is measured and compared against a predetermined set point. An error signal from this measurement is used to identify an entry in a lookup table. The entry is a control signal used to vary the input to the system so as to reach a desired output. The lookup table entries are configured so that as the output reaches the desired set point, smaller and smaller incremental steps are taken in varying the input.

Improved manually-powered drive tool means comprising a generally pistol-shaped housing having a barrel portion with a hand grip extending substantially perpendicularly from one end of the barrel portion, a drive shaft rotatably mounted in the barrel portion and projecting from the end of the barrel portion opposite the hand grip, a trigger lever pivotally connected adjacent the lower end of the hand grip, an arcuate drive gear connected to the upper end of the trigger lever for movement therewith, a differential gear means for coupling the drive gear to rotate the socket drive shaft, and reversing means for selectably connecting the trigger lever to rotate the differential gear means in a selected direction.

A setback controller, typically a thermostat, controls a control unit which holds a condition within an enclosure at either a low energy consumption set point or a high energy consumption set point depending on the present time. The controller uses a recovery sensor to measure the state of a condition which can affect the rate at which recovery from the low energy to the high energy set point is likely to occur, and then starts recovery at a time consistent with the state of the condition so as to complete recovery at or near the time selected for the return to the high energy set point. The condition sensor may be located adjacent to the outside of the enclosure to sense one or more conditions. In a temperature control application, the recovery sensor may include a temperature sensor located outdoors near the controlled space and a wind velocity sensor.

A temperature control system for a building is disclosed utilizing a central demand limit controller. The system includes a number of control modules or thermostats that have both proportional error and integral error functions. The integral error is reset at intervals by an interstage differential to drop single stages of air conditioning. This reduces demand until the maximum allowed demand is met. The integral error function is a timed function and the stages return in a random manner to restore setpoint temperature.

A control system and method for space temperature regulating equipment are disclosed in which mechanical cooling equipment is controlled as a function of sensed space temperature and a first temperature set point; and an economizer for admitting low enthalpy outside air is controlled as a function of sensed space temperature and a second temperature set point independent of the first temperature set point.
