An apparatus and a method comprising same for removing metal oxides from a substrate surface are disclosed herein. In one particular embodiment, the apparatus comprises an electrode assembly that has a housing that is at least partially comprised of an insulating material and having an internal volume and at least one fluid inlet that is in fluid communication with the internal volume; a conductive base connected to the housing comprising a plurality of conductive tips that extend therefrom into a target area and a plurality of perforations that extend therethrough and are in fluid communication with the internal volume to allow for a passage of a gas mixture comprising a reducing gas.

Electrode assembly for the removal of surface oxides by electron attachment

A multizone convection furnace is provided in which gas from a cooling chamber of the furnace is directed into one or more heat zones of the furnace for the purpose of providing a specified thermal profile. The gas introduced from the cooling chamber into the one or more heat zones is of the same type of gas present in the heat zones, and typically is nitrogen. In a preferred embodiment, the convection furnaces comprises a heating chamber composed of a plurality of adjacent heat zones and a cooling chamber at the exit end of the heating chamber. A conveyer extends through the furnace for movement of a product through the heat zones and cooling chamber of the furnace. The cooling chamber is coupled to one or more of the heat zones such that cooled gas from the cooling chamber can be introduced into selected heat zones. In one version, a cooled gas path is provided to all of the heat zones and cooled gas is introduced into intended zones by opening associated valves. Alternatively, cooled gas paths can be provided to only predetermined zones where cooled gas introduction is desired.

Convection furnace thermal profile enhancement

The present invention provides a method for conveniently manufacturing a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) at a cost that is less than five-hundred dollars per kilowatt of electricity. The method comprises forming an electrode layer and depositing an electrolyte material on the surface of the electrode. The formed structure is an electrode-electrolyte bi-layer. A second electrode is deposited onto this bi-layer to form a multilayer fuel cell structure comprising an electrolyte positioned between two electrodes. This multilayer structure is then heated and fired in a single thermal cycle to remove any binder materials and sinter, respectively, the fuel cell. This thermal cycle can be performed in a furnace having one or more chambers. The chamber(s) preferably contains a variable or multiple frequency microwave source for heating the cell and removing binder materials in the electrolyte and electrode structures. The chamber(s) also preferably include a convection and/or radiation source for sintering the fuel cell. In addition, the method of the invention harmonizes and minimizes the deviation among the thermophysical properties of the electrolyte and electrode structures. This harmonization reduces and minimizes the temperature gradient within the cell such that the structure can be uniformly heated and fired during the thermal cycle. The multilayer structure is also unlikely to distort and fracture by minimizing the temperature gradient in the cell. An SOFC can also be manufactured by the present method in an order of magnitude less time than standard processes.

In a system for thermally processing materials, at least one slot eductor is disposed in a wall or roof surface of the furnace chamber to provide circulation of gas within the furnace chamber.

Thermal processing system having slot eductors

The present invention provides a system and method for binder removal and sintering of materials such as ceramic materials and products, LTCC intervals, solid oxide fuel cells and powder metals. A combination of microwave and convection/radiation heating is employed for binder removal and sintering. Preferably, the microwave heating is accomplished using a variable or multi-frequency microwave source. A gas atmosphere is provided in the furnace chamber by one or more eductors which produces a high volume gas circulation in the furnace chamber to achieve a highly uniform gas environment and temperature. The process in accordance with the invention controls the heating cycle, the heat sources and thermal profile depending upon the composition of the particular material being processed. The thermal processing can be accomplished in a batch furnace in which a product is loaded for processing and unloaded after processing. The invention can also be practiced in a continuous process wherein the product is conveyed between furnace sections or chambers of a furnace.

Process and system for thermally uniform materials processing

A continuous pusher furnace includes a product carrier assembly incorporating a traveling gas barrier. The product carrier assembly comprises a plate disposed to receive product thereon and a gas barrier extending upwardly from the plate. The perimeter of the gas barrier is sized and configured to fit within a vestibule between heating chambers in the furnace with a clearance gap with the vestibule selected to increase a gas flow velocity through the vestibule sufficient to overcome a gas diffusion velocity through the vestibule in a direction opposite to the gas flow. In this manner, gas is unable to diffuse into an upstream heating chamber. In an alternative embodiment, an exhaust outlet may also be provided in the vestibule or chamber to exhaust gas from upstream and downstream heating chambers from the furnace.

A continuous pusher furnace includes a product carrier assembly forming a traveling gas barrier. The product carrier assembly comprises a pusher plate disposed to receive product thereon and a gas barrier extending upwardly from the pusher plate. The perimeter of the gas barrier is sized and configured to fit within a vestibule between heating chambers in the furnace with a clearance gap with the vestibule selected to increase a gas flow velocity through the vestibule sufficient to overcome a gas diffusion velocity through the vestibule in a direction opposite to the gas flow. In this manner, gas is unable to diffuse into an upstream heating chamber. In an alternative embodiment, an exhaust outlet may also be provided in the vestibule or chamber to exhaust gas from upstream and downstream heating chambers from the furnace.

A high-temperature conveyor furnace with a low friction conveyor travel surface is provided. The furnace includes a muffle defining a heating chamber, hearth plates providing a hearth surface within the heating chamber, and a conveyor belt to convey product through the heating chamber. The conveyor belt is formed of a first material, such as a nickel-chrome alloy. A plurality of low-friction inserts are supported by the hearth plates, preferably in openings in the hearth plates, to provide a surface upraised from the hearth surface upon which the conveyor belt travels. The inserts are formed of a second material, such as an electronics grade ceramic, that is different from the first material of the conveyor, which minimizes friction between the inserts and the belt. The low-friction surface is particularly suitable for high temperature, low dewpoint furnace applications, such as stainless steel brazing.

A furnace for thermally processing product includes one or more eductors. The eductor provides for increased circulation of atmosphere within the furnace for heat transfer or outgassing purposes. The eductor may be used to introduce clean gas to a product which outgasses volatiles to enhance the outgassing process by lowering the partial pressure of the volatile across the product as it is being heated. The eductor is also used to enhance heating or cooling of a product. Additionally, the eductor may be used to reduce or eliminate air stagnation areas within the furnace. The eductor may be located entirely within the furnace to recirculate the atmosphere of the furnace. Alternatively, the eductor may be located outside the furnace housing such that the eductor entrains gas from ports attached to the furnace and then reintroduces the gas into the furnace after the gas is cleaned, heated or cooled.

A furnace includes a high temperature heating source located within the cavity of the furnace which incinerates undesired effluents produced during the normal thermal processing of material. The heating source comprises one or more hot wires disposed within apertured tubes, which are at a temperature above the ignition point of the undesired effluents. As the effluents pass into the tube through the apertures, they are incinerated, thereby producing an exhaust that is generally pollution free. Additionally, the heat used during the incinerating of the undesired effluents fully provides the heating requirements of the furnace for the thermal processing of material.

A support assembly for supporting a glass panel during thermal processing. In one embodiment, a support assembly includes a base member, and a mechanism secured to the base member. The mechanism includes a support plate adapted for contact with a panel, wherein the mechanism is operative to distribute the weight of the panel and support plate about a bottom surface of the support plate. In a further embodiment a support assembly includes a base assembly and a leveling assembly having a plurality of plates defining a support surface. An alternative embodiment of a support assembly is adapted for supporting panels in a vertical position and includes a base assembly and a levelling assembly.

Panel support mechanism

A walking beam furnace is provided for moving a work product through a high temperature (1,600.degree. C.) furnace at high speed in large horizontal increments. A monolithic walking beam mechanism, including an array of parallel beams and support therefor, fabricated entirely from a refractory material such as silicon carbide (SIC), provides a movable, planar hearth surface. A fixed array of longitudinally disposed, spaced-apart hearth members, provides a fixed, planar hearth surface. The beams are narrower than the spacing between the hearth members to permit passage of the ,array of beams in coplanar alignment with the fixed hearth members through the spacing between the hearth members. The beams of the walking beam mechanism and the fixed hearth members alternately support the work product so that the work product is conveyed by the beams in an incremental fashion without sliding the work product along the hearth members during a continuous cycle of raising the monolithic beam support, moving it forward, lowering it, retracting it, and raising it again.

Walking beam furnace

A furnace is provided for continuous high-temperature heat processing in which a work product is conveyed through a furnace muffle by rectilinear beam motion. An inner and an outer beam are equipped with interleaved rods which are used to alternately lift the work product and advance it through the muffle. A continuous cycle of sequentially raising and advancing the rods attached to one beam, while lowering and retracting the rods of the other beam causes stepwise movement of the work product through the furnace. At no point in the cycle does the work product, rods, or beams make contact with the muffle, nor do the interleaved rods touch each other. The result is frictionless conveyance of the work product through the muffle which virtually eliminates particle generation.
