A transparent conductive article includes a transparent substrate, a thin electrically conductive grid, and a carbon nanolayer. The grid is disposed on the substrate, and the carbon nanolayer is also disposed on the substrate and in contact with the grid. The conductive grid and the carbon nanolayer may have thicknesses of no more than 1 micron and 50 nanometers, respectively. The carbon nanolayer has a morphology that includes graphite platelets embedded in nano-crystalline carbon, and can be produced with a buffing procedure using dry carbon particles without substantially damaging the grid structure. The article may have a visible light transmission of at least 80%, and a sheet resistance less than 500 or 100 ohms/square. The transparent substrate may comprise a flexible polymer film. The disclosed articles may substantially maintain an initial sheet resistance value when subjected to flexing.

A method of making nanostructured polymeric film includes: providing a tool having a porous anodized aluminum surface or a metallic replica thereof, wherein the average depth of the pores and the average pore width fall with specified ranges; forming a continuous layer of thermoplastic polymer selected from cellulose esters, poly alpha-olefins, and combinations thereof on at least a portion of the surface of the tool such that the continuous layer extends into the pores of the surface; separating the continuous layer from the tool as a film having nanofibrils formed on a major surface of the tool, the surface of the tool having a fluorocarbon release agent thereon, or the continuous layer comprising a fluorocarbon melt additive, or both. Nanostructured films are also disclosed.

At least two fixable fluid materials are digitally applied adjacent to each other on a surface of a substrate and fixed to provide fixed coatings having different surface energies The first fixed coating has a first average receding contact angle with water, and the second fixed coating has a second average receding contact angle with water, wherein the magnitude of the difference between the first and second average receding contact angle is at least 30 degree. The coated substrates are useful for controlling the flow of fluid.
