Barrier units and articles made therefrom, particularly constraining bands of high strength and low weight for containing articles, especially in blast resistant container assemblies, are disclosed. The barrier unit comprises a surface having a regular polygonal perimeter with a plurality of substantially parallel sides, each of which terminates in at least one loop integral with the surface. The surface comprises at least one network of high strength fiber with at least about 50 weight percent of the fiber comprising substantially contianuous lengths of fiber aligned in the hoop direction of the loops. The barrier units have utility as constraining bands for loads of articles like logs, and as doors/closures for access openings to the interior of aircraft blast resistant cargo containers. They are also useful as fences and window protectors.

Barrier units and articles made therefrom

A composite having a plurality of filaments arranged in a fibrous web that is held together in a unitary structure by a domain matrix. The domain matrix comprises a plurality of matrix islands that individually connect, or bond, at least two filaments, to thereby hold the filaments in a unitary structure. Portions of the filament lengths within the unitary structure are free of matrix islands, causing the domain matrix to be discontinuous. The composite possesses a greater flexibility than coated structures. The composite may be formed into cross-plied structures. A method of making the composite also is disclosed.

Flexible fabric from fibrous web and discontinuous domain matrix

Blast resistant and blast directing containers, as well as doors and closures therefor, for receiving explosive articles and preventing or minimizing damage in the event of an explosion. The container comprises at least three nested bands of material wherein the bands are oriented relative to one another to substantially enclose a volume and to form a container wall having a thickness substantially equivalent to the sum of the thicknesses of at least two of the bands. The containers have utility as cargo holders, particularly in aircraft where weight is an important consideration, and as transport devices for hazardous materials such as gunpowder and explosives, e.g., bombs and grenades.

Blast resistant and blast directing containers and methods of making

Blast resistant and blast directing container assemblies for receiving explosive articles and preventing or minimizing damage in the event of an explosion. The container assembly includes an opening covered by a band of blast resistant material with at least one slit therethrough in the hoop direction of the band, and optionally, a blast mitigating material located within the container. The container can be collapsible for storage when empty. The container assemblies have utility in aircraft where weight is an important consideration, more particularly as cargo holders or containment devices in the passenger cabin. They are also particularly useful to bomb squad personnel as transport devices for hazardous materials such as gunpowder, high explosives and combinations of high explosives with shrapnel, e.g., grenades and pipe bombs.

An improved penetration resistant composite of the type comprising at least one substrate layer having one or more planar bodies affixed to a surface thereof, the improvement comprising laminated planer bodies comprising at least two layers, at least one or said layers being a metal layer positioned on the impact side of said bodies exposed to said threat and at least one of said layers being a fibrous layer comprising a fiber network in a polymeric matrix.

A flexible article of manufacture especially suitable for use as a ballistic resistant body armor which comprises one or more composite layers, at least one of said composite layers comprising a base layer having a plurality of planar bodies positioned between two sandwiching flexible layers out of contact with each other and a plurality of planar bodies positioned on a surface of said base layer out of contact with each other and in disalignment with the sandwiched planar bodies.

A flexible article of manufacture especially suitable for use as a ballistic resistant body armor which comprises at least one substrate, said layers being a fibrous layer, and at least one layer having a plurality of bodies sewn to at least one surface of said substrate layer, said bodies having one or more flexible seams which allow portions of said body to flex along said seam.

An improved flexible composite of manufacture especially suitable for use as a ballistic resistant body armor, said improved penetration resistant composite of the type comprising at least one penetration resistant layer comprising a flexible substrate having a plurality of penetration resistant elements on a surface thereof, said elements comprising a planar body having one or more fibrous layers on a surface of said body, each of said layers comprising a fiber network, said fiber network such that movement of said fibers in the direction of the edges of said body is restrained.
