Methods and devices relating to polymer-bioceramic composite implantable medical devices, such as stents are disclosed. A suspension solution is formed including a fluid, a biodegradable polymer, and bioceramic particles. The biodegradable polymer and particles are precipitated from the suspension to form a mixture. A composite is formed by combining the mixture with another polymer and a scaffolding is formed from the composite.

Using novel synthetic techniques, siloxane-urea segmented copolymers are made. The copolymers advantageously contain a polyether interface, with controlled morphologies and properties. High molecular weight, high strength siloxane-urea copolymers with urea hard segment contents ranging from 5 to over 60% by weight may be prepared. Polymer properties that can independently be controlled include modulus (1.0 to 120 MPa), ultimate tensile strength (1.5 to 25 MPa), level of equilibrium water absorption (&#x2dc;0 to 100% by weight) and refractive index (1.43 to 1.46).

An abrasion resistant coating for a substrate, particularly a transparent polymeric substrate or a metallic substrate, includes a cured inorganic/organic hybrid network material formed by a sol-gel co-condensation of at least one metal alkoxide and a silane-functionalized organic compound, wherein the silane-functionalized organic compound is a di- or triamine (such as, for example, diethylene triamine and 3,3'-iminobispropylamine), an aliphatic diol (such as, for example, ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 1,5-pentanediol), an aromatic diol (such as, for example, hydroquinone) or a triol (such as, for example, glycerol), functionalized by a silane-functional compound.

Reacting carbonyls, such as aldehydes and ketones, with amines produces a ketimine or aldimine and a water byproduct. When the ketimine or aldimine reaction occurs in a polymer composition, the polymer becomes foamed due to the evolution of water. Hence, carbonyl and amine containing compounds may be introduced into a polymeric composition to serve as an in-situ blowing agent. The carbonyl and amine containing compounds may be different polymers which will be combined through a ketimine or aldimine linkage to form a graft co-polymer, they may be small molecular weight additives that are placed in the composition with a polymer that is to be foamed as a byproduct of a ketimine or aldimine reaction of the additives, or they may be a polymer containing a carbonyl or amine moiety and a small molecular weight additive compound that will react with the moiety on the polymer to form a ketimine or aldimine.

A series of new high abrasion resistance coating materials have been prepared utilizing organic/inorganic hybrid materials formed by cohydrolyzing a metal alkoxide sol (e.g. silicon, aluminum, titanium, or zirconium metal alkoxide sol) with one or more bis(trialkoxysilane-containing) organic components or related functionalized species. These hybrid materials show optical clarity and improve the abrasion resistance of polymer substrates when applied as coatings and cured on such substrates.

Polymeric catalysts (e.g., polymeric acid catalysts such as poly(styrene)sulfonic acid) can be used in the synthesis of sol-gel derived ceramic materials from metal alkoxides, for example, organic/inorganic hybrid materials formed by reaction of a metal alkoxide and a reactive endcapped polymeric modifier. The use of a polymeric catalyst, rather than a conventional monomeric (inorganic or organic) acid catalyst, has a non-deleterious effect on the aging behavior and offers potential for control of rheological properties (spinnability, coatability, etc.) of the hybrid materials.

New hybrid materials have been prepared by combining a titanium alkoxide sol with high a refractive index phosphine oxide-containing oligomeric component (triethoylsilane-capped poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide). These materials are prepared by the sol-gel method. The final products are transparent and display high refractive index (n.sub.D =1.66-1.80). The refractive index of these hybrid materials display a linear relationship with titanium oxide content.

New hybird materials prepared by incorporating a metal alkoxide sol, which is adapted to yield a high refractive-index metal oxide (e.g., titanium dioxide or zirconium dioxide), with a high refractive-index organic polymeric component (e.g., a triethoxysilane-capped poly(arylene ether) ketone or poly(arylene ether) sulfone) have been developed by the sol-gel method. The final products are transparent and display a high refractive index (n.sub.D =1.60-1.76). The refractive index of these hybrid materials has a linear relationship with the metal oxide content.
