Some embodiments are directed to a device for monitoring patient usage of a medicament inhaler, being adapted to deliver doses of medicament. The device includes a housing, for releasable attachment to the medicament inhaler, and a sensor configured to determine when a dose of medicament has been dispensed from the medicament inhaler. The device is attachable to the medicament inhaler, and is subsequently operable without any modifications being required to be made to the medicament inhaler. The device may also include an electronic control module which is in communication with the sensor, the electronic control module being adapted to monitor and/or store data relating to patient usage of the medicament inhaler.

Some embodiments are directed to an adherence monitor for use with a tethered cap inhaler device. The adherence monitor engages the inhaler device, and includes a tether opening located within a housing of the adherence monitor for receiving the tether. The tether opening is in the form of a slot in a base portion of the housing. The path length of the tether around the adherence monitor is kept from being increased, compared to its path length when the adherence monitor is not attached to the inhaler, by having the slot located to allow the tether to pass through the slot. Various sensors of the adherence monitor in various embodiments detect inhaler usage.

This invention relates to a compliance monitor for monitoring patient usage of a medicament delivery device, where the medicament delivery device includes a store of medicament and a medicament dispensing means. The compliance monitor includes a housing adapted to enclose the medicament delivery device, and a dose counter, associated with the housing, for recording the delivery of a dose of medicament to the patient from the medicament delivery device. The arrangement and construction is such that the housing is loosely coupled to the medicament delivery device, whereby the housing is able to move relative to the medicament delivery device during the delivery of the dose of medicament, and it is this movement which actuates the dose counter, either directly or indirectly, in order to record the delivery of the dose of medicament.

Adherence monitors are disclosed, incorporating cap removal sensors together with a determined time period in order to determine that a dose of medicament has been dispensed. In another form, cap removal data is combined with acoustic data to determine that a dose of medicament has been dispensed. Several specific structural arrangements are also disclosed.

Some embodiments are directed to a compliance monitor for monitoring patient usage of a medicament inhaler, the medicament inhaler including a store of medicament, a first housing for housing the store of medicament, a medicament dispenser for delivering a dose of medicament, a mouthpiece for directing the dose of medicament into the mouth of the patient, and a removable and replaceable cap for the mouthpiece. The compliance monitor includes a cap detector, such as a switch, for determining when the cap is covering the mouthpiece and/or for determining that the cap is being removed or replaced, with respect to the mouthpiece. The compliance monitor may also include a dose detector, such as a switch, for determining that a dose of medicament has been dispensed. Furthermore the cap is attached to the first housing by a tether or hinge.

Some embodiments are directed to a compliance monitor for monitoring patient usage of a dry powder medicament delivery device. The medicament delivery device includes a store of medicament housed within a main body portion, and a base portion which is rotatable with respect to the main body portion. The medicament delivery device also includes a medicament dispenser for dispensing a dose of medicament into an inhalation chamber, a mouthpiece through which the dose of medicament may be inhaled by a user, and a replaceable cap. The compliance monitor includes a first portion for receiving and/or retaining the base portion of the medicament delivery device, and a second portion for releasably securing the medicament delivery device to the first portion.

Some embodiments are directed to a device for monitoring patient usage of a medicament inhaler, being adapted to deliver doses of medicament, and including parts which move during the dispensing of a dose of medicament. Some embodiments are directed to a compliance monitor for monitoring usage of a medicament delivery device that includes a store of medicament, and a medicament dispenser for delivering a dose of medicament. The compliance monitor includes a compliance monitor housing configured to attach to the medicament delivery device, a dose detector for determining when a dose of medicament is dispensed, and a recognition module for identifying the properties of the medicament delivery device.
