There is provided a process for ring opening of aromatics and cycloaliphatics, as well as isomerization of aliphatics. The feedstream to this process comprises hydrocarbons having 6 carbon atoms. The process involves the use of at least two reactors connected in series. The first reactor comprises a zeolite catalyst and is operated under conditions which particularly promote ring opening. The catalyst in this first reactor may comprise zeolite Beta and platinum. A downstream reactor is operated under conditions to promote isomerization of aliphatics. The catalyst in the second reactor may comprise alumina, platinum and a chloride component. Hydrogen in the effluent of the first reactor may be removed and recycled to the first reactor. Hydrogen required for the second reactor may be satisfied by hydrogen remaining dissolved in the effluent from the first reactor after hydrogen is recycled to the first reactor.

Combined paraffin isomerization/ring opening process

A layered catalyst contains a core of at least one, and preferably three, molecular sieve components within a shell layer of reduced molecular sieve content. A preferred catalyst consists of a core of a large pore molecular sieve, preferably a dealuminized Y-type zeolite, a shape selective paraffin cracking/isomerization component, preferably HZSM-5, and a shape selective aliphatic aromatization component, preferably gallium ZSM-5, within a shell of an alumina-rich, matrix. The shell can capture metals from the feeds being processed, it can act as a metals sink, and can remove metals form the unit by attrition. The catalyst is preferably prepared by forming the core and then coating or encapsulating the core with a shell having a reduced molecular sieve content. The shell may contain a pillared clay or other very large pore cracking component. The shell may be an attritable coating of an amorphous rare earth oxide, aluminum oxide and aluminum phosphate composite, which traps metals.

Catalytic cracking using a layered cracking catalyst

There is provided a method for preparing alpha-olefin oligomers of superior lubricating properties by contacting an alpha-olefin feed under oligomerization conditions with a catalyst comprising an activated layered silicate containing silica and oxide of Group VIB metal, e.g., Cr, between its layers. The catalyst can be activated by exposure to an oxidation gas at high temperature followed by treatment with a reducing agent, e.g., CO.

Oligomerization of alpha-olefins over layered silicate compositions

There is provided a method for synthesizing layered silicates such as magadiite and kenyaite. The source of silica used in this method is freshly precipitated from a silicate solution. For example, this silica source may be obtained by treating an aqueous solution of sodium silicate with sulfuric acid to form an amorphous silica precipitate. This silica precipitate is not dried to reduce its activity prior to use.

Layered silicate

A moderate pressure hydrocracking process in which a highly aromatic, substantially dealkylated feedstock is processed to high octane gasoline and low sulfur distillate by hydrocracking over a catalyst, preferably comprising ultrastable Y and a Group VIII metal and a Group VI metal, in which the amount of the Group VIII metal content is incorporated at specified proportion into the framework aluminum content of the ultrastable Y component. The feedstock which is preferably a light cycle oil has an aromatic content of at least 50, usually at least 60 percent, and an API gravity not more than 25. The hydrocracking typically operates at 400-1000 psig at moderate to high conversion levels to maximize the production of monocyclic aromatics which provide the requisite octane value to the product gasoline. The distillate products from the hydrocracker are reduced in their sulfur content.

Catalyst for light cycle oil upgrading

A process for producing a natural gas condensate having a reduced amount of mercury from a mercury-containing natural gas wellstream, wherein the wellstream is separated into gaseous and liquid fractions. The treatment of the gaseous fraction includes treatment with a carbonate solution which, upon regeneration, yields an acid gas. A portion of the acid gas is mixed with the liquid fraction, the mixture is then filtered, passed over a substance capable of adsorbing hydrogen sulfide, and separated into a stream comprising a natural gas condensate and at least one other stream comprising lower molecular weight hydrocarbons and/or other gases.

A Pt/Ba/USY catalyst prepared with a high SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ratio USY gives improved aromatics selectivity compared to other Pt/USY containing catalysts. The improved selectivity is a result of the method of catalyst preparation which includes incorporation of a Group IIA metal after platinum incorporation.

Dehydrocyclization and reforming catalyst

There is provided a catalyst comprising a layered silicate, such as magadiite, containing interspathic polymeric silica which serves to prop open the layers. The catalyst further comprises rare earth cations which are exchanged with other cations in the silicate. It has been discovered that this rare earth cation exchange imparts enhanced hydrothermal stability to the catalyst. There is also provided a method for making this catalyst and a process for using this catalyst for cracking hydrocarbons. In the cracking process, the catalyst is regenerated.

Rare earth exchanged layered silicate catalysts

A layered catalyst suited to the catalytic cracking of heavy feeds comprises a core and a shell. The shell comprises at least 5 wt % of at least 1 molecular sieve having openings of at least 8 angstroms. The core comprises at least 10 wt % of at least 1 molecular sieve having openings comprising a 12 or less-membered ring and has a reduced, if any, content of said molecular sieve having openings of at least 8 angstroms, relative to its concentration in the shell. Suitable molecular sieve materials having openings of at least 8 angstroms include MCM-41, VPI-5, MCM-9 and layered metal oxides, e.g., pillared clays. The required molecular sieve of the core can include zeolite Y, Ultrastable Y or intermediate pore size zeolites such as ZSM-5. The shell which may further contain a metals passivator can act as a metals sink, and can remove metals from the unit by attrition. The catalyst is preferably prepared by forming the core and then coating or encapsulating the core with a shell material. The shell may also comprise an attritable coating of an amorphous rare earth oxide, aluminum oxide and aluminum phosphate composite, which traps metals.

Layered cracking catalyst and method of manufacture and use thereof

A process is provided for producing a high quality lubricating oil base stock in increased yield. The process includes a hydrocracking step employing a catalyst composition comprising a zeolite of the faujasite type, e.g., zeolite USY, possessisng a silica:alumina ratio of at least about 50:1, and a hydrogenation component.

There is provided a method for preparing a zeolite other than ZSM-5 from a reaction mixture comprising a mixed organic directing agent which is a combination of (a) an organic nitrogen containing compound such as an amine or a quaternary ammonium compound and (b) an alcohol and/or diol. Particular zeolites synthesized by this method include ZSM-22 and ZSM-23. The use of an alcohol or a diol may inhibit the coformation of ZSM-5. Especially when used to prepare ZSM-23, this method enables the preparation of more catalytically active ZSM-23 of reduced crystallite size and also enables the use of lower crystallization temperatures. Particular mixed organic directing agents for the preparation of ZSM-23 are combination of (a) pyrrolidine and (b) ethanol or ethylene glycol. Other factors which enhance the activity of ZSM-23 include the use of the following in the reaction mixtures for preparing ZSM-23: potassium ions; precipitated silica particles as sources of silica; and spray dried precipitated silica/alumina particles as sources of silica and alumina. The catalytic stability of alumina bound ZSM-23 catalysts is especially enhanced by steaming. Particular reactions which can be catalyzed by ZSM-23 made according to methods described herein include the dealkylation of ethylbenzene and the alkylation of benzene with ethylene.
