A small radius- or zero radius-turn vehicle that may be steered by differentially-driven rear drive wheels and by at least one electronically-controlled, steerable front wheel. A device, e.g., one or more levers, may be provided that controls both speed and direction of the drive wheels. A sensor may be provided that detects a position of the lever(s). A controller may calculate a steering angle of the front wheel based upon the position, and issue a command to an actuator associated with the front wheel. The actuator may rotate the front wheel to an electronically calculated steering angle in response to the command.

An adjustable suspension system for an operator platform that is pivotally attached at a pivot axis to a chassis of a turf maintenance vehicle. The system may include a suspension apparatus selectively attachable either to a support area of the chassis, or to the platform such that the apparatus is located between the support area and the platform. The suspension apparatus may be attachable at either a first location or a second location, wherein the suspension apparatus is spaced-apart from the pivot axis: by a first distance when in the first location; and by a second distance, different than the first distance, when in the second location. The suspension apparatus may include a support member and resilient element(s) attached to the support member.

Operator platform suspension system for turf maintenance vehicle

A grounds maintenance vehicle such as a stand-on spreader/sprayer and a steering system for use with the same. In one embodiment, the steering system includes a laterally swinging control handle accessible by an operator standing on a platform of the vehicle. The handle controls movement of one or more steerable wheels such that lateral swinging of the control handle toward a left side results in a corresponding left turn, while lateral swinging of the control handle toward a right side results in a corresponding right turn.

A control system for electronically controlling engine speed and PTO clutch mechanism engagement of a grounds maintenance vehicle such as a lawn mower. In one embodiment, an electronic controller (electronic control unit or ECU) may receive operator inputs from a speed setting switch and an on/off PTO clutch engagement switch. The ECU may take these inputs and make intelligent decisions as to when to engage/disengage the clutch mechanism and may change engine speed automatically prior to, during, and/or after clutch mechanism engagement/disengagement. In one or more of these speed setting switch positions, the switch may set a speed of the engine to a first speed when the clutch mechanism is disengaged, and a second speed (different than the first speed) when the clutch mechanism is engaged.

A drive system for use with an endless drive member, e.g., a belt. The drive system may utilize an idler pulley that, in a first position, tensions the belt sufficiently to ensure power transmission between a driving pulley and a driven pulley. The idler pulley may be also be moved to a second position. In the second position, the idler pulley may both: relax tension in the belt to terminate power transmission to the driven pulley; and contact a brake member to quickly stop idler pulley rotation. Belt tension may then stop rotation of downstream driven pulleys. As a result, disengagement of the drive system and active braking of the idler pulley (and thus the driven pulleys) may both be accomplished via a single motion of the idler pulley.

A pivot assembly to permit relative pivotal motion of a sleeve of the pivot assembly about a pivot axis. The pivot assembly may contain a spherical bearing assembly therein. The spherical bearing assembly may include a spherical portion and a tubular portion, wherein the tubular portion is operable to form a sealing surface, e.g., a sealing member may seal directly with the tubular portion.

An operator control system for a self-propelled vehicle such as a lawn mower is provided wherein the control system includes two opposing and preferably upwardly extending and converging hand grips each having a corresponding drive control lever associated therewith. Each drive control lever may have at least a portion that is parallel to a grip axis of its respective hand grip. Further, each drive control lever may have a pivot axis that is substantially parallel to the corresponding grip axis such that the drive control lever remains substantially parallel to its respective hand grip throughout its travel. In some embodiments, a neutral lock is provided to permit locking of each drive control lever in at least one position, e.g., a neutral position. Secondary levers such as operator presence control (OPC) levers may also be included. In one embodiment, an OPC lever is associated with each hand grip.

A bagging assembly for a riding lawn mower including a mower deck having a grass discharge conduit extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom. The bagging assembly includes a support for supporting a pair of grass collection bags thereon together with a hood which is selectively movably disposed above the bags. The support structure includes an elongated, horizontally disposed cross-beam having a bag-supporting frame secured thereto which extends rearwardly therefrom. A flexible seal is secured to the cross-beam along the length thereof and is also secured to the lower forward end of the hood to prevent grass clippings from falling downwardly and forwardly through the space normally found between the lower forward end of the hood and the support structure. When the hood is in its closed position, the flexible seal engages the upper forward portions of the grass collection bags to maintain the bags in position.

Bagging assembly for a riding lawn mower

A lawn mower including a liquid-cooled engine having a radiator grille positioned over the radiator thereof. The radiator grille includes a perforated screen member having a series of alternating grooves and ridges formed therein which run downwardly and rearwardly from the forward end of the screen member. The design of the screen member and the radiator grille permit the perforated screen member to self-clean and also provides a convenient means by which the screen member may be manually cleaned, if necessary.

Riding lawn mower having a liquid-cooled engine

A multiblade lawn mower including a mower deck having a plurality of cutting blades rotatably disposed therein. A first flow control baffle is positioned in the mower deck between the cutting blades and the front wall of the mower deck and extends substantially continuously between the sides of the mower deck. A second flow control baffle is positioned in the mower deck rearwardly of the cutting blades. The first and second flow control baffles include a plurality of semi-circular baffle portions which define a plurality of open throat portions therebetween. A plurality of selectively removable mulcher baffles are positioned in the mower deck to close the throat portions, thereby defining a substantially cylindrical mulching chamber around each of the cutting blades.

A riding lawn mower having a low center of gravity comprising a frame having a pair of drive wheels rotatably mounted at the rearward end thereof and having a caster wheel supported mower deck at the forward end thereof. A plurality of cutting blades are disposed within the mower deck. An engine support deck is positioned rearwardly of the operator's station on the mower and is disposed in a plane closely adjacent the rotational axis of the rear drive wheels. A vertically disposed rotatable shaft is mounted in the rearward end of the mower deck and has its upper end disposed above the top wall of the mower deck. An upper pulley is mounted on the rotatable shaft above the top wall of the mower deck and is connected to the spindles of the cutting blades by a first belt. A lower pulley is mounted on the rotatable shaft below the upper pulley and is substantially disposed in the same plane as the top wall of the mower deck. A second belt interconnects the lower pulley with the engine of the mower through a pair of idler pulleys.

Lawn mower having a low center of gravity

An apparatus is provided for quickly adjusting a dual hydraulically powered, wheel-steered lawn mower to achieve straight line travel when steered to the straight ahead position. Right and left hydraulic pump controls interconnect the speed control of the mower to right and left hydraulic pumps which are fluidly connected to right and left hydraulic motors which drive right and left drive wheels on the mower. The left hydraulic pump control is length adjustable and is maintained in a set position by a pair of jam nuts. The right hydraulic pump control also includes a length adjustable rod, but the same is length adjustable through the use of an adjustment knob which may be quickly adjusted while the mower is moving. The output of the right hydraulic pump may be adjusted by means of the right hydraulic pump control so that the output of the right hydraulic pump may be varied with respect to the left hydraulic pump so that the mower will move ahead in a straight line manner.
