An implantable device, such as an implantable medical device (IMD) includes at least two radio frequency (RF) antennas and may additionally include an RF communication circuit. The RF antennas are spatially diverse, are disposed adjacent a housing, and are each configured to receive RF signals transmitted to the IMD from a remote RF signal source. The RF communication circuit, if included, is disposed within the housing and is configured to selectively receive the RF signals received by one or more of the spatially diverse RF antennas.

Implantable device including multiple communication antennas

A coaxial cable antenna is provided for use in an external device, such as a programmer or monitor, to enhance communication between the external device and an implanted medical device (IMD). The coaxial cable antenna provides the external device with polarization diversity. For example, the coaxial cable antenna includes a first portion and a second portion that are substantially perpendicular to one another. Each of the portions of the coaxial cable antenna has a different polarization orientation, thus providing the programmer with polarization diversity. Further, the external device may include more than one coaxial cable antenna to provide the external device with spatial diversity as well as polarization diversity provided by the coaxial cable antenna design. The coaxial cable antenna configurations reduce problems associated with polarization mismatches, antenna nulls, and multi-path propagation interference.

Coaxial cable antenna for communication with implanted medical devices

An implantable medical device ('IMD') configured in accordance with an example embodiment of the invention generally includes a housing, a connector header block coupled to the housing, a dielectric sheath located around at least a portion of the housing and/or around at least a portion of the header block, and a telemetry antenna located within the dielectric sheath. The antenna is configured to support far field telemetry with an external device such as a programmer. In one example embodiment, the antenna is configured as a balanced antenna having two separate antenna elements driven 180 degrees out of phase. Each of the antenna elements has a feed point on a perimeter edge of the IMD housing and a floating endpoint. A number of alternate embodiments are also provided.

Compact and conformal telemetry antennas for implantable medical devices

A telemetry component according to an embodiment of the invention, such as a programmer or a monitor for an implantable medical device ('IMD'), includes at least one radio frequency ('RF') antenna that is configured to accommodate far-field telemetry between the telemetry component and the IMD. The RF antenna is shaped, sized, positioned, and otherwise configured to account for surface current cancellation caused by induced surface current on an electrically conductive surface of the telemetry component.

Compact conformal antenna for a medical telemetry system

An implantable medical device ('IMD') configured in accordance with an example embodiment of the invention generally includes a housing, a connector header block coupled to the housing, and an optional telemetry antenna coupled to the header block. The optional antenna assembly is suitably configured to support the intended IMD application (e.g., the desired telemetry range, the intended IMD implant location, or other practical considerations). The optional antenna assembly may be utilized by itself or in cooperation with a permanent telemetry antenna of the IMD. In one practical embodiment, the optional antenna assembly has a connection end that is compliant with known pacemaker electrode lead standards, which allows the IMD to leverage existing connection methodologies.

A telemetry antenna for an implantable medical device includes one or more portions having a non-linear configuration. In some embodiments, the non-linear configuration provides an antenna having a greater antenna length than the linear lengthwise dimension of the antenna structure. In some embodiments, the non-linear configuration is a serpentine pattern.

Telemetry antenna for an implantable medical device

Improved telemetry antennas and methods of fabrication for an implantable medical device (IMD) for use in uplink telemetry (UT) and downlink telemetry (DT) transmissions between the IMD and an external medical device (EMD) are disclosed. A first telemetry antenna element is supported to extend in a first direction along a minor side of the IMD housing by a first header segment, and a second antenna element is supported to extend in a second direction along a second minor side of the IMD housing by a second header segment. The first and second antenna elements are supported to extend apart at substantially 90&#xb0; to one another, i.e., substantially orthogonally, in substantially a common plane to optimize UT transmission and DT reception of UHF telemetry signals by at least one of the first and second antenna elements depending upon the mutual spatial orientation with the antenna elements of an EMD antenna.

A method and an apparatus for reducing coupled electrical energy resulting from an electromagnetic field. Embodiments of the present invention provide for an elongate body having a proximal end portion, a middle portion, and a distal end portion and at least one coil wound about at least one of the proximal end portion, the middle portion, and the distal end portion, the coil to provide for filtering of radio frequency (RF) signal-coupled electrical energy.

An implantable medical device for delivering a medical therapy or for monitoring physiologic parameters. The device is provided with a hermetic housing containing a transceiver coupled to an antenna located outside the housing by means of a feedthrough, mounted to the housing and coupled to the transceiver. The antenna takes the form of a length of conductor, coupled to the feedthrough. In some embodiments the antenna is an insulated stranded conductor coupled to the feedthrough by means of a metallic loading tab. In other embodiments the antenna includes a length of conductor encased in a dielectric, extending from the feedthrough, and a coaxial shield coupled to the housing and extending along only a portion of the length of conductor.

Telemetry system for implantable medical devices

A device for use in communication with an implantable medical device. The device is provided with a spatial diversity antenna array mounted to a housing and an RF transceiver operating at defined frequency, coupled to the antenna alray. The antenna array comprises two antennas spaced a fraction of the wavelength of the defined frequency from one another, each antenna including two antenna elements mounted to the housing and located oithogonal to one another. Selection of which of the antennas is employed is accomplished by an device controller, responsive to the quality of the signals received by the antennas.

A microstrip RF telemetry antenna is formed on or within the exterior surface of an implantable medical device housing that is formed either of a conductive metal or of a non-conductive dielectric material. The microstrip antenna is formed of an electrically conductive radiator patch layer that is laminated upon an exterior facing side of a dielectric substrate layer of relatively constant thickness. A conductive ground plane layer is formed on the opposite side of the dielectric substrate layer to extend parallel to and at least coextensively with the radiator patch layer. The radiator patch layer is coupled to the transceiver circuitry within the implantable medical device housing by a feedthrough extending through the dielectric substrate layer, the ground plane layer and the implantable medical device housing side wall. If the implantable medical device housing is conductive it may form the ground plane layer over which the dielectric substrate layer and the radiator patch layer are formed through deposition or other techniques. If the implantable medical device housing is formed of a suitable non-conductive dielectric material, the ground plane layer is formed on an interior surface thereof and the radiator patch layer is formed on an exterior housing surface thereof, preferably by deposition techniques. The ground plane layer may be recessed to form a cavity backed ground plane that receives the dielectric layer and radiator patch layer within the cavity. The exterior surfaces of the radiator patch layer, the dielectric layer and any exposed surface of the ground plane layer may be electrically insulated by a radome layer.
