A rear view mirror assembly comprising a bracket adapted to be mounted on a vehicle body, and a case, in which a reflective member is pivotally mounted. A lead screw is mounted in the bracket. A pair of arms projecting laterally from the reflective member beyond the periphery thereof and have ridge formations which engage with the lead screw so that rotation of the lead screw causes angular movement of the reflective member.

Rear view mirror

A rear view mirror for a motor vehicle comprising a case containing a mounting platform which has a concave part-spherical recess. A reflective member is secured to a mirror carrier which has a hollow projection with a part-spherical outer surface dimensioned to be a sliding fit in the recess a part-spherical inner surface and a diametrically oriented slot. A stem is secured to the mounting platform so as to project from the center of the recess and has a T-shaped crosshead dimensioned to pass through the slot when aligned therewith and to engage with the part-spherical inner surface of the hollow projection when aligned transversely to the slot. A lever on the mounting platform engages with a slot in the mirror carrier to prevent relative angular movement between the mirror carrier and the mounting platform about said stem.

Mirror carrier mounting arrangement for a vehicle rear view mirror

A vehicle mirror comprises a mirror case (20), an intermediate member (38), a base member (18) secured to a vehicle, and a mirror case pivot assembly (56, 72) at one end of the intermediate member (38) pivotally connecting the intermediate member (38) to the mirror case (20) for relative angular movement about a first pivot axis. First and second rigid link (26, 42) have opposite ends pivotally connected to the base member (10) and to the opposite end of the intermediate member (38). The pivotal connections (28, 44) at the ends of the first and second rigid links (26, 42) nearer to the front of the vehicle are more widely spaced from each other than the pivotal connections (40, 52) at the other ends of the first and second links (26, 42).

Vehicle exterior mirror

A detent mechanism that acts between two components that rotate with respect to one another to control rotation from a first set position to at least a second set position. The detent mechanism (10) comprises at least one rotating cam (23) positioned between adjacent surfaces of two components (11 and 16). The cam (23) is spaced from the axis of rotation of the two components (11 and 16). The cam (23) is journalled for rotation on one of the components (11) about an axis that is substantially transverse to the axis of rotation between the two components (11 and 16). The operating surface (25) of the cam (23) comprises at least one cam lobe that is caused to rotate as the two components (11 and 16) rotate. The cam (23) acts to separate the two components (11 and 16). Spring (17) acts to urge the adjacent surfaces together so that a predetermined torque is required to cause relative rotation between the components (11 and 16). The torque is set by the force applied by the spring (17) that results from the extent of compression of the spring (17) when the two components (11 and 16) separate upon rotation. The advantage of the detent mechanism (10) is that sufficient resistance to rotation can be obtained with a relatively light spring (17) due to the high rate of lift provided by the cam (23).

Detent mechanism

A drive unit for adjusting the orientation of a reflective member of rear view mirror assembly for a motor vehicle is assembled within a drive housing. The drive housing contains an electric motor arranged to drive a jacking nut which is supported within the housing by first and second bearing surfaces formed on opposite walls of the housing. The drive housing is formed in two parts, each of which comprises a base portion and a peripheral side wall portion dimensioned so that, when the two parts are assembled together, part of the side wall portion of one part surrounds a corresponding part of the side wall portion of the other part. After assembly, glue is inserted between the side wall portions so as to hold the two parts together with their respective bearing surfaces spaced apart by a distance determined by the size of the jacking nut.

Rear view mirror assembly for motor vehicle

A pivotable screw jack drive for a tiltable element (11, 12) such as a rear view mirror of a motor vehicle, wherein a motor driven worm wheel (31) also performs the function of a jacking nut (29) which rotates about a jacking screw (35), the projecting end (41) of the jacking screw being connected to the tiltable element (11,12) for universal pivotal movement but being restrained against relative rotation, the jacking nut (29) being mounted in a housing (22) with a ball joint so that the nut and screw pivot as an assembly.

Pivotable screw jack drive

A breakaway rear vision mirror has a mounting base and a pivoted assembly. A control lever is pivoted to the base and coupled to a mirror backing plate which carries a mirror, which is adjusted for position by the lever. The hinge between the mounting base and pivoted assembly is releasable, but held together by a spring which co-acts between the pivoted assembly and the lever, thereby applying a pressure which urges the lever into firm frictional contact with the mounting base and tends to retain the mirror in its set position.

Breakaway mirrors

A mirror housing is provided with two motor driven gear nuts each of which comprises a conductive material which however has a high resistance, and each of which engages a conductive wiper and threads on a respective screw shaft non-rotationally coupled to a mirror holder, one gear nut being operable in a direction to tilt a mirror in an horizontal plane and the other in a direction to tilt a mirror in a vertical plane, and conductors contact the ends of the gear nuts, so that when a voltage is applied across them, the voltage on the conductive wiper will be a function of the positions of the screw shafts in their nuts, thereby constituting position sensing means.

Mirror orientation control means

A breakaway rear vision mirror assembly having a mounting frame and a pivoted assembly which carries the mirror, the pivoted assembly being coupled to the mounting frame by means of an elongate U-shaped spring, the ends of which are coupled to the mounting frame and an intermediate portion which bears on the pivoted assembly to return the pivoted assembly to a usable position after it has been deflected.

Breakaway mirror spring means

A rear vision mirror assembly has a mounting member to which a mirror backing plate is pivoted for tilting about two planes (a 'universal' tilt), a mirror carried on the backing plate, and a blade which projects from the mounting plate and which frictionally engages a metal spring retainer or spring retainers.
