A regeneration system includes a particulate matter (PM) filter with an upstream end for receiving exhaust gas and a downstream end. A control module determines a current soot loading level of the PM filter and compares the current soot loading level to a predetermined soot loading level. The control module permits regeneration of the PM filter when the current soot loading level is less than the predetermined soot loading level.

Electrically heated particulate matter filter soot control system

A system includes a particulate matter (PM) filter, an electric heater, and a control circuit. The electric heater includes multiple zones, which each correspond to longitudinal zones along a length of the PM filter. A first zone includes multiple discontinuous sub-zones. The control circuit determines whether regeneration is needed based on an estimated level of loading of the PM filter and an exhaust flow rate. In response to a determination that regeneration is needed, the control circuit: controls an operating parameter of an engine to increase an exhaust temperature to a first temperature during a first period; after the first period, activates the first zone; deactivates the first zone in response to a minimum filter face temperature being reached; subsequent to deactivating the first zone, activates a second zone; and deactivates the second zone in response to the minimum filter face temperature being reached.

High exhaust temperature, zoned, electrically-heated particulate matter filter

A control system includes a heater control module and a particulate matter (PM) load module. The heater control module selectively activates an electric heater to initiate regeneration in a zone of a particulate filter and deactivates the electric heater after the regeneration is initiated. The regeneration continues along a length of the particulate filter after the electric heater is deactivated. The PM load module determines a PM load based on an outlet temperature of the particulate filter after the regeneration is initiated.

Detecting particulate matter load density within a particulate filter

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine comprises a particulate filter assembly configured to receive exhaust gas from the engine. The particulate filter assembly comprises an electrically heated catalyst, a particulate filter disposed downstream of the electrically heated catalyst, a hydrocarbon injector, in fluid communication with the exhaust gas, upstream of the electrically heated catalyst and configured to inject excess hydrocarbon into the exhaust gas, an air pump in fluid communication with the exhaust gas upstream of the electrically heated catalyst and configured to deliver air to the exhaust gas to increase the volumetric gas flow rate through, and to decrease the heat residence time in, the particulate filter and a controller configured to operate the hydrocarbon injector, the electrically heated catalyst and the air pump based on predetermined exhaust gas flow rates, temperature thresholds and particulate loadings within the particulate filter.

Control apparatus for temperature excursions within an exhaust gas treatment system

A method and system for controlling a diesel particulate filter includes a particulate matter load determination module determining a particulate matter load in a diesel particulate filter (DPF), a desired oxygen level determination module determining a desired exhaust gas oxygen level based on the particulate matter load, an oxygen comparison module comparing the desired exhaust gas oxygen level and a measured exhaust gas oxygen level and generating a comparison signal and an electric DPF control module controlling an electrically heated catalyst in response to the comparison signal.

Method and system for controlling an electrically heated particulate filter

A method for controlling an engine includes receiving a request to regenerate a particulate matter filter and regulating, in response to the request, operation of the engine and an electric heater that heats an inlet surface of the filter such that for a first period, the heater maintains the inlet surface within a first temperature range above a regeneration temperature of the filter and combustion of a first mass of accumulated PM within the filter is initiated, for a second period following the first period, exhaust cools the inlet surface to within a second temperature range below the regeneration temperature and combustion of the first mass is inhibited, and for a third period following the second period, the inlet surface is maintained within a third temperature range above the regeneration temperature and a second mass of the accumulated PM is combusted. A related control system is also provided.

Systems and methods for layered regeneration of a particulate matter filter

An exhaust treatment system comprises a particulate matter filter, a first heater element, and a second heater element. The particulate matter (PM) filter filters PM from exhaust gas and includes N zones. Each of the N zones includes an inlet area that receives a portion of the exhaust gas. N is an integer greater than one. The first heater element includes a contact area that heats exhaust gas input to an inlet area of a first one of the N zones. The second heater element includes a second contact area that heats exhaust gas input to an inlet area of a second one of the N zones. A ratio of the contact area of the first heater element to the inlet area of the first zone is greater than a ratio of the contact area of the second heater element to the inlet area of the second zone.

A device for filtering particulates from an exhaust gas feedstream of an internal combustion engine includes a filter substrate having a multiplicity of alternately closed parallel flow passages having porous walls oriented parallel to a flow axis of the exhaust gas between an inlet and an outlet thereof, wherein subsets of the flow passages are associated with respective ones of a plurality of zones, a flow control valve to control flow of exhaust gas to each of the plurality of zones, a multi-zone heating element including a plurality of individually activated heating elements each corresponding to one of the plurality of zones.

A method for regenerating a particulate filter configured to treat engine exhaust gas in a vehicle equipped with an on-board navigation and an extra-vehicle communications system includes monitoring present operation of the vehicle, projecting vehicle operating conditions based upon information from the on-board navigation and the extra-vehicle communications system, monitoring a storage capacity of the particulate filter, executing a control scheme to regenerate the particulate filter when the storage capacity of the particulate filter exceeds an upper threshold, executing the control scheme to regenerate the particulate filter when the storage capacity of the particulate filter is less than the upper threshold and in response to an operator request to regenerate the particulate filter, and executing the engine control scheme to regenerate the particulate filter when the storage capacity of the particulate filter is less than the upper threshold and the projected vehicle operating conditions indicate an opportunity to regenerate the particulate filter.

Method and apparatus for regenerating a particulate filter system

A system includes an electrical heater and a particulate matter (PM) filter that is arranged one of adjacent to and in contact with the electrical heater. A control module selectively increases an exhaust gas temperature of an engine to a first temperature and that initiates regeneration of the PM filter using the electrical heater while the exhaust gas temperature is above the first temperature. The first temperature is greater than a maximum exhaust gas temperature at the PM filter during non-regeneration operation and is less than an oxidation temperature of the PM.

Elevated exhaust temperature, zoned, electrically-heated particulate matter filter

A system includes a particulate matter (PM) filter with multiple zones, an electric heater and a control module. The electrical heater includes heater segments, which each correspond with a respective one of the zones. The electrical heater is arranged upstream from and is proximate with the PM filter. The control module selectively applies a first energy level to a first one of the zones via a first one of the heater segments to initiate regeneration in the first zone. The control module also selectively applies a second energy level that is less than the first energy level to a second one of the zones via a second one of the heater segments to initiate regeneration in the second zone.

Variable power distribution for zoned regeneration of an electrically heated particulate filter

A system includes a particulate matter (PM) filter, a sensor, a heating element, and a control module. The PM filter includes with an upstream end that receives exhaust gas, a downstream end and multiple zones. The sensor detects a temperature of the exhaust gas. The control module controls current to the heating element to convection heat one of the zones and initiate a regeneration process. The control module selectively increases current to the heating element relative to a reference regeneration current level when the temperature is less than a predetermined temperature.

Low exhaust temperature electrically heated particulate matter filter system

A system comprises a particulate matter (PM) filter that comprises an upstream end for receiving exhaust gas, a downstream end and at least one portion. A control module initiates combustion of PM in the PM filter using a heater and selectively adjusts oxygen levels of the exhaust gas to adjust a temperature of combustion adjacent to the at least one portion of the PM filter. A method comprises providing a particulate matter (PM) filter that comprises an upstream end for receiving exhaust gas, a downstream end and at least one portion; initiating combustion of PM in the PM filter using a heater; selectively adjusting oxygen levels of the exhaust gas to adjust a temperature of combustion adjacent to the at least one portion of the PM filter.
