Embodiments provide a redox flow battery, an ion exchange membrane for use in the redox flow battery and a method for producing the ion exchanger membrane. The ion exchange membrane includes a base layer, a first hydrophobic layer, and a second hydrophobic layer. The base layer includes sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone). The base layer has a first surface and a second surface. The first hydrophobic layer includes a polydimethylsiloxane elastomer. The first hydrophobic layer is positioned on the first surface of the base layer. The second hydrophobic layer includes the polydimethylsiloxane elastomer. The second hydrophobic layer is positioned on the second surface of the base layer. The ion exchange membrane is configured to prevent cross contamination of the first electrolyte and the second electrolyte. The redox flow battery includes a first half-cell, a second half-cell, and the ion exchange membrane. The first half-cell includes a first electrolyte. The second half-cell includes a second electrolyte. The first half-cell and the second half-cell are configured to undergo a redox reaction to discharge and charge the redox flow battery.

Cardo-type co-polyimide membranes for sour gas feed separations from natural gas

Compositions of and methods for separating components of a natural gas stream are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving an inlet stream comprising natural gas, the inlet stream having an inlet pressure, and the inlet stream further comprising methane, helium, and an impurity. The method includes allowing the inlet stream to contact a block co-polyimide membrane, the block co-polyimide membrane exhibiting both higher permeability for and higher selectivity for the helium and the impurity than for the methane at the inlet pressure of the inlet stream and separating the methane from the helium and the impurity to create a retentate stream, the retentate stream comprising an increased concentration of methane relative to the inlet stream. The method also includes creating a permeate stream comprising the helium and the impurity at an increased concentration of helium and impurity relative to a concentration of helium and impurity in the inlet stream.

Sour gas feed separations and helium recovery from natural gas using block co-polyimide membranes

Certain embodiments of the invention provide an apparatus for separating aromatic hydrocarbons from an aromatic hydrocarbon feed stream. The apparatus includes a membrane support, and a hydrophilic polymer membrane matrix disposed on the membrane support. The hydrophilic polymer membrane matrix includes an effective amount of polyvinyl alcohol and an effective amount of sodium alginate. The apparatus further includes a carrier agent bonded to the hydrophilic polymer membrane matrix using a cross-linking agent. The carrier agent exhibits a greater affinity for aromatics compared to aliphatics. The apparatus further includes a membrane housing configured to hold the membrane support. The membrane housing includes an inlet, a permeate outlet, and a retentate outlet, the inlet being operable to receive the aromatic hydrocarbon feed stream, the permeate outlet being operable to discharge a permeate stream, and the retentate outlet being operable to discharge a retentate stream.
