A magnetic stack includes a magnetic recording structure and at least two heat-sink layers where heat-sink layer located furthest from the magnetic recording structure has thermal conductivity equal to or greater than intervening heat-sink layers. One or more interlayers can be included in the magnetic stack. Data storage devices and systems including one or more of the magnetic stacks, and related methods.

Heat-sink structure in magnetic stack, and related articles, systems, and methods

A memristor may include an exchange-coupled composite (ECC) portion to provide three or more nonvolatile magneto-resistive states. The ECC portion may include a continuous layer and a granular layer magnetically exchange coupled to the continuous layer. A plurality of memristors may be used in a system to, for example, define a neural network.

Exchange-coupled composites

A magnetic stack includes a substrate and a soft magnetic underlayer deposited on a top surface of the substrate. A heat sink layer is disposed on top of the soft magnetic underlayer, and an interlayer is deposited on top of the heat sink layer. A non-magnetic seed layer is deposited on top of the interlayer. A magnetic recording structure which includes more than one magnetic recording layer is deposited on the top surface of the non-magnetic seed layer.

An apparatus comprises a magnet housing dimensioned to receive a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) medium or a hard disk drive comprising at least one HAMR medium. A degausser is disposed in the magnet housing and is configured to generate at least one field sufficient to erase the HAMR medium, where the HAMR medium has a coercivity of between about 20 and 100 kOe at room temperature.

Method and apparatus for degaussing heat-assisted magnetic recording media

Provided herein is an apparatus including a layer stack. A first granular metal layer overlies the layer stack, wherein the first granular metal layer includes first metal grains separated by voids. A first granular non-metal layer overlies the first granular metal layer, wherein the first granular non-metal layer includes first non-metal grains separated by a first segregant. A second granular non-metal layer overlies the first granular non-metal layer, wherein the second granular non-metal layer includes second non-metal grains separated by a second segregant. A heat-assisted magnetic recording media structure with exchange-coupled composite layer structure may be utilized in a data storage device. The heat-assisted magnetic recording disk structure can have a FePt-based layer as a storage layer and a FePt-based or a CoPt-based magnetic layer with higher Curie temperature as a write layer. The interface between the write layer and the storage layer may be separated by an exchange control layer. The composite structure can be optimized to reduce jitter for high density data storage by tuning the exchange coupling between the write layer and storage layer.

Composite HAMR media structure for high areal density

An apparatus comprises a spindle to rotate a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic field generator to expose a track of the medium to a DC magnetic field. The magnetic field generator is configured to saturate the track during an erase mode and reverse the DC magnetic field impinging the track during a writing mode. A laser arrangement heats the track during the erase mode and, during the writing mode, heats the track while the track is exposed to the reversed DC magnetic field so as to write a magnetic pattern thereon. A reader reads the magnetic pattern and generates a read signal. A processor is coupled to the reader and configured to determine an anisotropy parameter using the read signal. The apparatus can further comprise a Kerr sensor that generates a Kerr signal using the magnetic pattern.

Heat-assisted rotating disk magnetometer for ultra-high anisotropy magnetic measurements

Determining a Curie temperature (Tc) distribution of a sample comprising magnetic material involves subjecting the sample to an electromagnetic field, heating the sample over a range of temperatures, generating a signal representative of a parameter of the sample that changes as a function of changing sample temperature while the sample is subjected to the electromagnetic field, and determining the Tc distribution of the sample using the generated signal and a multiplicity of predetermined parameters of the sample.

Method and apparatus for determining Curie temperature distribution of a sample of magnetic material

An apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a storage layer, a thermal exchange control layer disposed over the storage layer, and a write layer disposed over the thermal exchange control layer. A Curie temperature of the thermal exchange control layer is lower than a Curie temperature of the storage layer. The Curie temperature of the thermal exchange control layer is lower than a Curie temperature of the write layer.

In some embodiments, a thermally assisted data recording medium has a recording layer formed of iron (Fe), platinum (Pt) and a transition metal T selected from a group consisting of Rhodium (Rh), Ruthenium (Ru), Osmium (Os) and Iridium (Ir) to substitute for a portion of the Pt content as FePtTwith Y in the range of from about 20 at % to about 80 at % and X in the range of from about 0 at % to about 20 at %.

Low power thermally assisted data recording media

A three dimensional magnetic recording media can consist of a coupling layer disposed between first and second vertically stacked recording layers. The coupling layer can provide exchange or antiferromagnetic coupling and allow the respective recording layers to be individually heat selected to different first and second coupling strengths through application of heat from a heat source.

Three dimensional data storage media

One embodiment described herein is directed to a method involving depositing a seed layer on a substrate, the seed layer comprising A1 phase FePt with a ratio of Pt of Fe greater than 1:1. A main layer is deposited on the seed layer, the main layer comprising A1 phase FePt with a ratio of Pt to Fe of approximately 1:1. A cap layer is deposited on the main layer, the cap layer comprising A1 phase FePt with a ratio of Pt to Fe of less than 1:1. The seed, main and cap layers are annealed to convert the A1 phase FePt to L1phase FePt having a graded FePt structure of varying stoichimetry from approximately FePtadjacent a lower portion of the structure proximate the substrate to FePtadjacent an upper portion of the structure opposite the lower portion.
