A system and method for facilitating automatically adjusting a user interface display screen or portion thereof. An example method includes determining context information associated with data, wherein the data is maintained in accordance with a data model; generating a signal when the context information changes; and employing the signal to automatically configure one or more characteristics of a user interface architecture, resulting in an adjusted user interface architecture. The context information may include information specifying one or more attributes relating to the data model. Generating may further include analyzing the one or more attributes to determine a modification to be made to the user interface architecture and then rendering a user interface display screen based on a modified user interface architecture.

A system and method for facilitating characterizing data to enable dynamic generation of a user interface feature based on the data. An example method includes maintaining data in accordance with a data model accessible to webpage computer code, wherein the data model is adapted to be populated with data associated with one or more data attributes in the data model; and providing a signal, identifying a data attribute, from the data model to webpage computer code to facilitate dynamic construction of one or more user interface features characterizing a rendering of a webpage. Data in the data model is characterized by one or more data attributes, each of which is associated with an attribute definition. The example method may further include organizing one or more attribute definitions in the data model as computing objects containing characterizations of the one or more data attributes.

Dynamic user interface tag format

A system and method for facilitating authoring computer code to facilitate rendering a display of data via a user interface display screen. An example method includes accepting a signal from a user input device to specify an attribute in accordance with a definition of a class of attributes in a data model; providing the specification of the attribute to a software component characterizing a webpage, wherein the software component includes an indicator for dynamic rendering of at least a portion of data included in the data model and associated with the attribute; and storing the definition of the class of attributes and data associated with the attribute, for retrieval and rendering of the data on a target device. The example method may include providing a mechanism for modifying attributes of the data model and propagating data model changes to webpage computer code.

Dynamic user interface authoring

Embodiments of the present invention provide techniques for customizing aspects of a metadata-driven software application. In particular, embodiments of the present invention provide (1) a self-contained metadata engine for generating customized metadata documents from base metadata documents and customizations; (2) a customization syntax for defining customizations; (3) a customization creation/update component for creating and updating customizations; (4) a customization restriction mechanism for restricting the creation of new customizations by specific users or groups of users; and (5) memory and caching optimizations for optimizing the storage and lookup of customized metadata documents.

Customization creation and update for multi-layer XML customization

Techniques for using a sandbox to test changes to the metadata of a metadata-driven application. In one set of embodiments, a mainline and a sandbox are created in a runtime environment of a metadata-driven application. The mainline is configured to include a mainline version of a metadata document of the application. The sandbox is configured to include a sandbox (i.e., test) version of the metadata document. At application runtime, requests to access and/or modify the metadata document are serviced either from the mainline or the sandbox based on a sandbox context of the current user session. Thus, changes to the metadata document may be tested on the sandbox version without affecting the mainline version, and vice versa. In various embodiments, multiple sandboxes may be supported in the runtime environment. In further embodiments, the sandbox version may be merged into the mainline version without bringing the runtime environment offline.

Sandbox support for metadata in running applications

Techniques for facilitating the sharing of metadata. In one set of embodiments, a metadata document is referenced by a plurality of software applications as a URL, the URL comprising a protocol component identifying a specialized protocol name and a path component identifying a name and namespace of the metadata document. The specialized protocol name indicates that the metadata document is a shared document stored in a shared metadata repository. When an application in the plurality of software applications needs to access the metadata document, the URL is passed to a URL resolver configured to identify the shared metadata repository based on configuration information associated with the application. The metadata document is then retrieved from the shared metadata repository. Since many existing application framework components and standards are adapted to reference metadata documents as URLs, embodiments of the present invention facilitate metadata reuse with minimal or no code changes to the applications or their underlying framework.
