Described herein are window retrofits including a monolithic silica aerogel slab having (i) an average haze value of <5% as calculated in accordance with ASTM standard D1003-13 and (ii) a U-factor of <0.5 BTU/sf/hr/° F., and a transparent polymer envelope sealed at an internal pressure of ≤1 atmosphere, wherein the monolithic silica aerogel slab is encapsulated in the transparent polymer envelope. The monolithic aerogel slab can have a transmittance>94% at 8 mm thickness. The window retrofit can be bonded to a glass sheet.

Energy efficient soundproofing window retrofits

Photo-detectors disclosed include at least one of a thin film or a heterostructure of photo-sensitive material and a pair of Ohmic contacts coupled to the at least one of the thin film or the heterostructure. The at least one of the thin film or the heterostructure is configured to be under a strain gradient to induce shift current flow within the material to perform photo-detection in a frequency range that includes a mid-infrared frequency range. The photo-detectors provided for can include a variety of configurations, such as a lateral configuration or a vertical configuration, and can operate in self-powered and negative illumination regimes. Associated methods are also provided, which can include inducing a strain gradient and performing photo-detection in a frequency range that includes a mid-infrared frequency range.

Flexo-electric broadband photo-detectors and electrical energy generators

Herein provided are cubic boron arsenide (c-BAs) single crystals having an unexpectedly high ambipolar mobility at room temperature, μ, at one or more locations thereof that is greater than or equal to 1500, 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2500, 2600, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, or 10000 cmVs, wherein the ambipolar mobility is defined as: μ=2μμ/(μ+μ), wherein μis electron mobility and μis hole mobility, and having a room temperature thermal conductivity at the one or more locations thereof that is greater than or equal to 1000 WmK. Methods of making and using the c-BAs single crystals are also provided.

Ultra-high ambipolar mobility cubic boron arsenide

The present disclosure generally relates to a stretchable anti-fogging tape (SAT) that can be applied to diverse transparent materials with varied curvatures for persistent fogging prevention. The SAT comprises three synergistically-combined transparent layers: i) a stretchable middle layer with high elastic recovery to keep transparent materials tightly bound; ii) an anti-fogging top layer to impart hydrophilicity to transparent materials; and iii) an adhesive bottom layer to form robust yet reversible adhesion between transparent materials and SATs. The SAT can be configured to have water condensate form a predominantly continuous film thereon in response to a high humidity environment At least two applications are demonstrated, including the SAT-adhered eyeglasses and goggles for clear fog-free vision, and the SAT-adhered condensation cover for efficient solar-powered freshwater production.

Transparent, anti-fog tape or film and related devices and methods

The invention overcomes the deficiencies of the prior art by providing a rapid approach for isolating binding proteins capable of binding small molecules and peptides via 'display-less' library screening. In the technique, libraries of candidate binding proteins, such as antibody sequences, are expressed in soluble form in the periplasmic space of gram negative bacteria, such as, and are mixed with a labeled ligand. In clones expressing recombinant polypeptides with affinity for the ligand, the concentration of the labeled ligand bound to the binding protein is increased and allows the cells to be isolated from the rest of the library. Where fluorescent labeling of the target ligand is used, cells may be isolated by fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). The approach is more rapid than prior art methods and avoids problems associated with the surface-expression of ligand fusion proteins employed with phage display.
