A disclosed vehicle guidance system includes a transceiver receiving information indicative of operating conditions of other vehicles along a roadway and a controller within a primary vehicle. The controller utilizes the received information indicative of operating conditions to determine a recommended vehicle path along the roadway responsive to the operation of the other vehicles, the position of the primary vehicle and a scenario selected based on both the information of operation of other vehicles and the position of the primary vehicle received by the controller. A communication device communicates the recommended vehicle path to the operator of the primary vehicle.

A method for determining wrong direction using a heat map includes: receiving sensor data from at least one sensor in communication with a hardware processor. The method also includes identifying a plurality of traffic participants and determining at least one attributes including at least a direction of travel. The method also includes generating the heat map based on the at least one attributes of the plurality of traffic participants, where the heat map indicates at least travel direction of the surface area. The method also includes receiving sensor data indicating a direction of travel and location of a first vehicle; and comparing the sensor data of the first vehicle with the heat map to determine when the first vehicle is traveling in an opposing direction to the travel direction of the heat map.

A method for generating a heat map of a surface area is provided. The method includes receiving sensor data from one or more sensors in communication with a hardware processor and positioned such that the surface area is within a field of view of the one or more sensors. The method also includes identifying one or more traffic participants from the sensor data. Additionally, the method includes determining one or more attributes associated with each one of the one or more traffic participants. The method includes generating the heat map based on the one or more traffic participants and the one or more attributes associated with each one of the one or more traffic participants.

For each pair of traffic participants (TPs) entering an intersection, a time to collision (TTC) value is calculated. A matrix of TTC values between TPs entering the intersection is created. A matrix of criticality values containing a respective criticality value for each pair of TPs is created. New measurement inputs for Kalman Filter or similar estimation approaches (at each sample) may include: DSRC messages from roadside transmitters (RSTs), such as: how long it takes for a DSRC signal from one or more fixed RSTs to reach the vehicle and comparison of that information with vehicle position estimates from a signal propagation model, which is based on how long it takes a DSRC signal to reach the vehicle GPS location from a fixed known RST location. From such measurements, it can be determined how much longer (or shorter) it takes to receive the RST message compared to the previous sample, which, in turn, gives an idea how far the vehicle has moved over a sample relative to a fixed RST location.

A method of identifying an object includes setting scan parameters for scanning, with a sensor, objects in a field of view of the sensor; setting classification parameters for identifying objects scanned in the field of view of the sensor; controlling the sensor to scan for objects in the field of view using the scan parameters, and to identify any scanned objects based upon the classification parameters; receiving information relating to a first object which is not in the field of view but is expected to enter the field of view; modifying the scan parameters based upon the received information, controlling the sensor to scan based upon the modified scan parameters; and identifying the first object in the field of view. Responsive to identifying the first object, the method performs one or more actions so the vehicle avoids the first object.
