A system and method is provided for the capture of bodily fluid upon lancing of a patient. In one embodiment, the fluid sample capture aperture mesh () ring is placed in the pathway of a finger penetrating member (). The aperture mesh ring has a center clearance area that allows the penetrating member to pierce the skin unobstructed. The aperture mesh ring may contain a series of fluid sampling meshes as to allow the release bodily fluid to 'wick' into the fluid sampling meshes for transport to the respective sensor. The invention may also relate to a method of improving the fluidic flow through a membrane mesh structure for the transportation of bodily fluids from a point of sampling to a point of measurement.

Method and apparatus for improving fluidic flow and sample capture

An in-canal hearing device includes a receiver, battery, and microphone assembly with a housing. The housing has an air and sound opening which is covered with a structure to inhibit the entry of cerumen and moisture. The structure may be in the form of an end cap having passages with walls which are both hydrophobic and oleophobic to prevent the entry of water, cerumen and other liquids. The structure may also include a flexible tube or a rigid perforated shell surrounding the passages that inhibit the deposition of solid cerumen and other debris onto the passages.

Contamination resistant ports for hearing devices

A plurality of Point-of-Care (POC) tests on a single cartridge () is provided such that sequential or nonsequential tests may be performed in an integrated fashion without changing the test cartridge. Each cartridge can contain a penetrating member sensor () combination in a radial disk format, interrogated and read by a single illumination/detection device. Alternatively a series of tests can be measured electrochemically and reported. Only those tests, which are required at the time, the sample is taken need to be reported, though all tests are carried out.

Method and apparatus for a point of care device

A simple, miniaturized, disposable acquisition and test module for monitoring glucose or other analytes successively for multiple times is described. A method and miniature analytical device with thermal regulation of reactant using a localized heat source capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation, such as light emitting diodes ('LED's) and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers ('VCSEL's), generating internal heat, such as resistive, inductive and Peltier heaters, or external heating. The miniature analytical device comprises of array of temperature-controlled zones to restrict the volume heated and localize the heating by having the localized heat source comprise an array of emitters or heaters.

Thermal regulation of fluidic samples within a diagnostic cartridge

An apparatus and method for pumping and optionally mixing of small quantities of biological fluid wherein the pumping mechanism is segregated from the biological fluid being pumped. The micro-pump pushes the biological fluid by compressing a cartridge housing the blood and reagents with collapsible walls with a roller or ball bearing, synchronized perpendicular plungers, or an acutely-angled member to push the biological fluid by collapsing the walls of the cartridge in the direction of flow.

The apparatus includes a probe labeled with a transition metal-ligand complex that hybridizes with the target to form an initial complex, a metal ion for doping the initial complex and forming a final complex, and a potential means for providing a potential to the final complex to produce a detectable signal indicating the presence of the target after redox reaction. The invention includes a composition of matter and method that utilizes energy transfer between one or more donor and acceptor molecules. The composition of matter includes an encapsulation vesicle having a matrix, a surface coating of an organo-metallic complex and a transparent protection layer. The transparent protection layer is capable of modification by addition of biomolecules to the surface in order to bind other molecules. The proximity of the bound biomolecules to the protective layer allows for energy transfer from a donor molecule internal to the protection layer to an acceptor molecule outside the protection layer. The protection layer acts to diminish the effects of collisional quenching on the donor molecules caused by ubiquitous small molecules such as molecular oxygen. The application also teaches a method of making and applying the complexes to immunoassays.

Fluorescence immunoassays using organo-metallic complexes for energy transfer

A method for producing a polymeric film resistant to degradation during sterilization such as gamma irradiation is presented. The method includes the steps of minimizing the number of free radicals formed during sterilization through use of an inert gas and a reactant scavenger within a sterilization pouch, which reactant scavenger may be acid adsorbents which scavenge the acid by-products formed during irradiation. The films retain physical and mechanical properties with long-term storage. The films are particularly amenable for use as packaging laminates in pharmaceutical, food, semiconductor and medical device industries.

Method to reduce damage caused by irradiation of halogenated polymers

A device for analyzing simultaneously multiple analytes in a fluid of unknown composition. The device includes a plurality of sensors, a light source for providing light to shine on the sensors, light detectors, and a processor. The sensors are exposed to a sample of the fluid of unknown composition. The plurality of sensors includes groups of sensors, each group targeting a specific analyte and including one or more sensors that contain an analyte-specific chemical that interacts more specifically with one analyte than with some other analytes to be analyzed. Each sensor in each group has a different chemical interacting with the analyte to target it. The light source shines light on the sensors of the plurality of sensors to cause light interaction with the sensors. The differences in the sensors lead to differences in the light interaction. The light detectors detects the light interaction by the sensors. The processor analyzes the light interaction by the sensors to take into account interference in light interaction among the analytes, thereby determining the concentration of each of the analytes in the fluid.

Optical sensor for sensing multiple analytes

A device for sampling and analyzing a physiological fluid from the skin of a patient by puncture. The device includes a body and sensors. The body has a needle with a point for puncturing a physiological tissue and a channel in the body for conducting the physiological fluid away from the point. The sensors are located in the body and are accessible to the physiological fluid conducting along the channel for physiological fluid analysis. The device can be used to lance the skin and obtain a representative sample of the physiological fluid, with relatively simple procedures and quick analysis to minimize the exposure of the physiological fluid sample to air.

Physiological fluid extraction with rapid analysis

A sensor for sensing in a gas stream a vapor of a liquid. The sensor includes a micropore and a wet temperature sensor. The micropore has an evaporation end and has a lumen to conduct liquid from a supply of the liquid for evaporation at the evaporation end. The wet temperature sensor has a heat sensitive part in contact with the liquid in the micropore. The heat sensitive part circumscribes the micropore and forms part of the lumen. Heat loss due to evaporation of the liquid when the wet temperature sensor wet with the liquid is placed in the gas stream will result in the temperature sensed by the wet temperature sensor being lower than the non-evaporative temperature of the gas stream. This lowering in temperature can be measured to determine the concentration of the vapor in the gas stream. An example of such a sensor has a thermocouple junction having micropores passing through the thermocouple junction.
