Method and system for generating electric power utilizing a coolant circuit, in which a coolant is evaporated at a lower level position, allowed to rise via tubing to a higher level position, liquified at the higher level position, and allowed to flow down to the lower level position in tubing where it impinges a hydraulic turbine connected to a generator. The preferred embodiment includes a vertical tube system of approximately 3000 m length, composed of a long tube for rising vapors and fall tubes for falling liquid coolant. Multiple cooling systems located at the higher level position, including a counterflow cooling system, forced-draught type air cooler, and a step-by-step cooling process, are utilized to liquify the coolant and provide working vapor to power the cooling systems. The coolant is composed to C.sub.3 H.sub.8 and NH.sub.3, which is varied on a percent composition basis to match atmospheric weather conditions.

Method and system for current generation

An electric power generating system includes a substantially conically tapering tower adapted to provide for the condensation of a vaporized fluid which has risen to the top of the tower. The condensate falls back to ground level, in a stream which actuates an electrical current generating turbine. The system can provide for the vaporization of the fluid to occur as a result of proximal association with a flowing water source, and a subsequent super heating of the vaporized fluid by proximal association with a source of waste heat such as a neighboring power plant.

System for current generation

In the distillation of fresh water from sea water, the sea water is passed ownwardly in a falling film evaporator through a multiplicity of vertical tube evaporator (VTE) stages and multiple stage flash (MSF) evaporators. After the sea water passes through the first VTE stage where it forms a liquid component and a steam component, the liquid component is distributed evenly into the next VTE stage while the steam component enters an adjoining MSF stage. Condensed fresh water flows downwardly from one MSF stage to the next and experiences flash evaporation. The sea water or brine component and the fresh water distillate flow downwardly through the VTE and MSF stages so that the brine component can be removed from the final VTE stage and the fresh water distillate from the final MSF stage. The steam used to evaporate the sea water flows initially through the first VTE stage and then in combination with the steam component of the sea water through the next MSF stage and then continues alternately through the remaining VTE and MSF stages. Inert gases produced during the stagewise evaporation are removed periodically by suction. In the lower or low pressure VTE stages, for each VTE stage the condensed fresh water distillate is flashed in a plurality of MSF stages. The sea water is preheated before it is introduced into the first VTE stage and the primary steam used for heating the sea water and the steam component of the sea water are passed through the preheater for heating the sea water. The preheater and the VTE stages of the falling film evaporator are formed of stamped heat exchanger parts.

Apparatus for the distillation of fresh water from sea water

A plate-type heat exchanger consisting of pairs of plates having longitudinal and transverse corrugations and forming a sinusoidal cross section with each pair of plates defining between them flow channels through the corrugations thereof. The corrugations in the longitudinal direction of the two plates of a plate pair register with one another whereas the corrugations in the transverse direction of a first plate are offset from the transverse corrugations of a second plate by half a wavelength (spacing of corresponding points of successive corrugations) while between the plate pairs bars are disposed which run along longitudinal corrugations of successive plate pairs and thus form longitudinal channels of an undulating flow pattern. Each plate of one of the plate pairs is mirror-symmetrical to or a mirror image of the closest plate of the next plate pair.

Plate-type heat exchanger

Tropical and subtropical regions having high ambient temperatures and relative humidity can be locally subjected to cooling and dehumidification according to the invention by a tower in which, upon a post or other vertically extending support, a pair of vertically aligned spaced apart air guides are provided. The lower air guide includes the cooler which can simultaneously condense moisture from the air while the upper air guide can include a heat dissipator of a refrigeration cycle, the air guides being associated with respective blowers and inducing ambient air into the air guide at a location between them and displacing the air through the air guides into heat exchanging relationship. The tower can also be used to collect potable (drinking) water by condensation from the atmosphere.

Apparatus for the cooling and dehumidification of ambient air in regions

In a pressure electrolyzer suitable for the electrolysis of water or hydrochloric acid or sodium chloride provided with bipolar electrodes forming a plurality of cell units arranged in the form of a cell block, the improvement which comprises a housing for the cell block, said housing being a pressure vessel designed for pressures of at least 1.1 bars, and further comprising said cell block having a square configuration, openings for the electrolyte being disposed on the underside of said cell block, said cells being arranged in a U-shaped turn, a mounting for the cell block and current leads attached exclusively to one end of said cell block and to one diameter of the side wall of the pressure vessel, said vessel having a cylindrical configuration, cooling means extending along the outside of said cell block, filter mat means being disposed in the flow path of the electrolyte upstream of the cooling means and means for conducting the electrolyte through said filter mat and cooling means and said openings for the electrolyte into the interior of the cell block.
