A method for preparing a bone including percutaneously forming a path to the cancellous bone using a multi-lumen cannula, providing a first passage to the cancellous bone in a central lumen and a second passage in a concentric outer lumen, introducing a rinsing fluid in one of the passages to rinse bone marrow and other soft tissue from the cancellous bone, and removing the rinsed bone marrow from the other passage. Also, a method for percutaneously treating a tissue affected by a lesion, including introducing a rinsing fluid in one of the passages to rinse the lesion and removing the rinsed lesion from the other of the passages. Also, a method of treating tissue with a lesion including introducing a thick flowable material through one lumen of the cannula and applying suction through the other lumen of the cannula.

Integrated cement delivery system for bone augmentation procedures and methods

A method of harvesting bone marrow, including percutaneously introducing a multi-lumen cannula into a cancellous bone, applying suction through a first passage defined in a first lumen of the cannula, injecting a thick flowable material into the bone from a second passage in a second lumen of the cannula, extruding the thick flowable material through a distal end of the cannula into the cancellous bone in order to displace the bone marrow and other bone fluids, the suction applied through the first passage providing a hydraulic force guiding the displaced bone marrow and collecting the displaced bone marrow for a therapeutic or diagnostic purpose. A thick flowable material for use in harvesting bone marrow in the cancellous portion of a bone and a method for percutaneously preparing a bone with a multi-lumen cannula and an inflatable device are also discussed.

A bone cement delivery system for vertebroplasty with a cannula having a rigid metal tubular inner wall surrounding a central conduit with a distal outlet port, a rigid metal tubular outer wall extending around the inner wall to define a peripheral conduit with a distal inlet port in the form of fenestrations defined in the tubular outer wall, unobstructed and directly exposed to an environment of the delivery system, a proximal inlet port in communication with the central conduit and a proximal outlet port in communication with the peripheral conduit. A vacuum pump communicating with the proximal outlet port of the peripheral conduit applies a pressure in the range of 10 to 100 KPa to create a pressure gradient between the central conduit and the peripheral conduit to produce a difference in flow rate between the conduits guiding the displacement of bone fluid and the flow of cement.

A bone cement delivery unit having a rigid support structure with a first portion configured to engage and retain a bone cement reservoir against its casing, a second portion supporting a transmission system and a third portion supporting and guiding a slidable push rod along the injection direction. The delivery system may include a control unit sliding the push rod opposite to the injection direction before stopping the push rod if the quantity of the bone cement pushed out of the reservoir has reached at least a predetermined minimum value, such as to eliminate residual flow. Also, the delivery system may include an adaptor including members electrically connected to the control unit, with the cement reservoir including a sensor for monitoring curing of the bone cement in electrical contact with the members of the adaptor.

An apparatus for determining an initiation point of cement curing, with a vessel for containing at least a portion of freshly mixed cement, means for passing an electric signal through the cement, means for detecting an abrupt change in a dielectric or electric property of the cement as a result of the electric signal and a display unit for displaying the initiation point of polymerization of the cement from the abrupt change in the dielectric or electric property detected, the change in the dielectric or electric property being a phase shift in the electric signal passed through the cement or a change in capacitive properties of the cement or a change in resistivity of the cement.

Method and apparatus for monitoring and/or controlling the curing of cements used in medical procedures

A system for monitoring a cement that undergoes polymerization during curing such as most bone and dental cements by passing an electrical signal through the cement to determine the swelling phase, the initiation of polymerization of the cement and the effective working phase. The system further can control the swelling phase to reduce the time from the mixing of the cement to the initiation of the polymerization by using a ultrasonic signal or by heating the cement and can control the effective working phase after the polymerization has been initiated in order to prolong the working phase by cooling the cement.

A cement delivery system for vertebroplasty including a rigid cannula having a tubular inner wall defining a central conduit to deliver bone cement and a tubular outer wall extending around the inner wall and spaced apart therefrom to define a peripheral conduit for aspirating bone fluids. Aspirating means communicate with a proximal outlet port of the peripheral conduit to create a pressure gradient between the central conduit and the peripheral conduit to provide a hydraulic force guiding the displacement of bone fluid and the flow of cement. Also, a bone cement delivery system including a rigid cannula having a tubular inner wall defining a central conduit, a tubular outer wall extending around the inner wall and spaced apart therefrom to define a peripheral conduit, and a tubular middle wall extending between the inner and peripheral walls and spaced apart therefrom to define a middle conduit around the central conduit.

A cannula assembly for injecting implant material into a bone, including an inner cannula defining a central conduit including a first proximal port in communication with the central conduit, an outer cannula surrounding the inner cannula to define a peripheral conduit, and a connector interconnecting the cannulas and detachable from at least one of the cannulas, and at least one of the connector, the first cannula and the second cannula including a second proximal port in communication with the peripheral conduit defined along a direction different than a longitudinal axis of the first and second cannulas.

Cannula assembly with detachable inner and outer cannulas

Combining an implant and cement for prophylactic and/or preventative use for femoral neck augmention. A hole is drilled into the femoral neck. The hole is filled with an uncured filler cement after loose materials have been removed from the hole. Then, an open-ended tube, an implant, having openings through its walls is inserted into the hole and attached to the bone. Finally, additional filler cement is provided under pressure to the inside of the tubular implant. The filler cement flows into spaces in the bone structure via the tube wall openings. A sliding leak-tight fit between the implant and a cement injection tube permits delivery of cement at preselected locations along the implant length. Pressure is maintained until the filler cement has hardened. A strengthening factor up to 3 was measured when osteoporotic bone was strengthened.
