A brake system is provided for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith. The brake system includes a housing defining first and second passages. First and second pistons are provided in the respective first and second passages for selectively moving the brake pad into engagement with the wheel rotor. First and second spindles are threadably coupled to the first and second pistons such that the pistons are axially movable relative to the spindles without the spindles rotating. Each spindle includes first threads separated by first cylindrical roots and each piston is coupled to second threads separated by second cylindrical roots.

Braking system with threaded connection

A method of monitoring a rotor of a motor vehicle having a caliper assembly driven by a motor for braking the vehicle includes detecting at least one harmonic response during a braking operation indicative of the interaction between the caliper assembly and the rotor. The at least one harmonic response is evaluated during the braking operation and an operator of the vehicle is notified of a condition of the rotor based on the evaluation.

Rotor condition monitoring system and method

An electric actuator assembly for a drum brake assembly having a brake drum includes a housing and a gear nut configured for rotation by a motor and provided in the housing. A pin extends longitudinally within the housing and is associated with a first clevis for receiving a first brake shoe. A spindle extends longitudinally within the housing and is aligned with the pin. The spindle has a first threaded connection with a second clevis for receiving a second brake shoe and a second threaded connection with the gear nut. The distance between the first clevis and the second clevis increases in response to rotation of the gear nut to move the brake shoes towards the drake drum. The second clevis is urged towards the first clevis in response to cooling of the brake drum in order to back drive the spindle and gear nut and thereby reduce the distance between the first clevis and second clevis.

Actuator for drum brake assembly

A method for controlling vehicle braking of a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith includes moving a piston into engagement with the brake pad by applying hydraulic pressure to the piston. The piston is locked in place against the brake pad with a parking brake. The hydraulic pressure is removed from the piston while the parking brake is locked.

Method of controlling an electronic parking brake

An electric brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad includes a housing with a passage. A piston assembly in the passage includes a spindle and a piston. The spindle is rotatable to cause the piston to move axially relative to the brake pad. A drive assembly includes a motor. A gear train is connected to the motor and the spindle. A coupling mechanism is coupled to the gear train and has a first condition enabling torque transmission from the motor to the spindle to axially move the piston to apply braking force to the brake pad. The coupling mechanism has a second condition disabling torque transmission from the motor to the spindle is prevented which permits the piston to retract and reduce the braking force on the brake pad without stopping or reversing the motor.

An actuator assembly for a vehicle brake is described. It comprises a carrier assembly () on which an activating carriage () for a brake lining is guided linearly. Moreover, an electric motor fastened to the carrier assembly () is provided which is coupled drivingly to the activating carriage via a gear unit and a spindle drive such that the activating carriage can be displaced selectively between a retracted position and an extended position. In addition, the actuator assembly comprises a locking assembly () for selectively immobilizing in rotation an output shaft () of the electric motor. The locking assembly () here comprises a locking lever () which at a first end () is mounted rotatably on the carrier assembly () and at a second opposite end () is coupled to a locking actuator (). A parking brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith includes a housing defining first and second passages. First and second pistons are provided in the respective first and second passages. Spindles extend into and are connected with each piston. A clutch unit is connected to the spindles and includes a motor. The clutch unit has a first condition allowing for rotation of the spindles in response to hydraulic pressure applied to the pistons such that the pistons are axially movable within the passages and relative to the spindles into engagement with the brake pad. The clutch unit has a second condition for rotating the spindles to drive the pistons into the brake pad and apply the parking brake.

Electronic parking brake

A parking brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith includes a housing defining first and second passages. First and second pistons are provided in the respective first and second passages. Spindles are threadably connected with each piston. A clutch unit is connected to the spindles. The clutch unit has a first condition allowing relative rotation between the spindles and the pistons such that the pistons are axially movable within the passages and into engagement with the brake pad in response to hydraulic pressure applied to the pistons. The clutch unit has a second condition preventing relative rotation between the spindles and the pistons such that pistons remains engaged with the brake pad when hydraulic fluid pressure is removed from the pistons.

A piston assembly for a disc brake assembly having a housing with a passage includes a piston provided in the passage and axially movable therein in response to hydraulic pressure. A rotatable spindle extends into the piston. A nut is threadably connected to the spindle such that rotation of the spindle results in axial movement of the nut within the passage to thereby axially move the piston. A damping member encircles the nut and has one of a sliding and rolling interface with the piston in response to relative axial movement between the nut and the piston to prevent rattling of the nut against the piston.

Anti-rattle caliper assembly

A system for controlling an electric brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith includes a housing defining a passage. An assembly is provided in the passage and includes a spindle rotatable about an axis and a piston aligned with the brake pad and axially movable in response to rotation of the spindle. A planetary gear stage includes a sun gear, a ring gear, and planetary gears. A first motor is coupled to the sun gear. A second motor coupled to the ring gear. A control system is configured to, in response to a detected braking event, rotate the first motor in a first direction to supply torque to the sun gear while the second motor is rotated in a second direction at varying speeds to supply torque to the ring gear such that the piston is cyclically moved towards and away from the brake pad to modulate a braking force on the rotor.

An electromechanical brake apparatus includes a housing supporting an inboard brake pad and an oppositely facing outboard brake pad for selective frictional contact with a rotor interposed longitudinally therebetween. An adjuster ramp assembly indirectly receives torque from the motor unit. A spindle is provided for selectively moving the inboard brake pad longitudinally. The spindle is operatively connected with the adjuster ramp assembly to indirectly receive torque from the motor unit therethrough. A leading ramp assembly is configured to transmit applied torque from the motor unit to the adjuster ramp assembly via at least one ramp ball longitudinally interposed therebetween. A predetermined amount and direction of torque is applied to each of the adjuster ramp assembly and the leading ramp assembly to assist with a selected one of (1) service brake application and (2) service brake release functions. The electromechanical brake apparatus is operative, at different times, for both functions.

Electromechanical brake apparatus and system with adjustment features

An electromechanical brake apparatus includes a housing supporting an inboard brake pad and an oppositely facing outboard brake pad for selective frictional contact with a rotor interposed longitudinally therebetween. The housing includes a mechanism cavity located longitudinally between the inboard pad and a motor having a motor output shaft. An adjuster ramp assembly indirectly receives torque from the motor. A spindle is operatively connected with the adjuster ramp assembly to indirectly receive torque from the motor therethrough. A leading ramp assembly is configured to transmit applied torque from the motor to the adjuster ramp assembly. The leading ramp assembly receives stepped-up torque from the motor via the motor output shaft and a ball thrust bearing at least partially located radially between the motor output shaft and an actuator ramp of the leading ramp assembly.

An electromechanical actuator package for actuating a brake assembly configured to operate a vehicle brake comprises: a motor; a differential operably connected to the motor, the differential comprising a pulley and an output connectable to the brake assembly; and a locking mechanism configured to lock the pulley of the differential, the locking mechanism comprising: a base configured to be movable, a plurality of projections projecting from the movable base, the projections comprising first and second projections, wherein at least a part of the pulley is positioned between the first and second projections projected from the movable base, an electromagnet assembly disposed adjacent to at least one of the projections, the electromagnet assembly operably associated with at least one of the projections, and one or more springs operably coupled to the movable base and/or at least one of the projections.

Electromechanical actuator package for actuating brake assembly

A roller screw system includes a spindle defining a longitudinal axis about which the spindle rotates. A nut at least partially radially surrounds the spindle. The nut is configured for longitudinal motion with respect to the spindle. At least one non-helically grooved roller is interposed radially between the spindle and the nut. A cage maintains the at least one roller in position radially between the spindle and the nut and supports the at least one roller for rotational motion. The nut is moved in longitudinally in a duty cycle responsive to transmission of rotational motion from the spindle to the at least one roller, and transformation of rotational motion of the at least one roller to longitudinal motion of the nut. A home position of the nut and a home position of the cage both move longitudinally after a predetermined number of duty cycles.

A piston configured for use in a brake system is disclosed. The piston can comprise: a body; and a footing; the footing positioned adjacent an end of the body, and having a recess that receives a central portion of the end; during operation of the brake system, the footing extends along a brake pad, and is configured to exert force on the brake pad during actuation of the disk brake system; and the footing having a face configured to contact the brake pad, the face having a length and a width, wherein the length is longer than an outside width of the body, and the length is greater than the width, and/or the face having a cross-sectional area normal to a direction of travel of the piston that is larger than a cross-sectional area of the piston body that is normal to the direction of travel of the piston.
