Disclosed is a method for reforming hydrocarbons comprising contacting the hydrocarbons with a catalyst in a reactor system of improved resistance to carburization and metal dusting under conditions of low sulfur.

Flotation apparatus (10) for removing finely divided bodies of an insoluble substance dispersed in an aqueous medium, such as oil and solids dispersed in water, comprises a vertical flotation column (12) having a feed inlet (14) and an outlet (22) for the aqueous medium, a sparging system (16) for generating gas bubbles rising upwardly in the aqueous medium to capture and raise the finely divided bodies of the insoluble substance to the surface of the aqueous medium in the column to form a layer (31) of the insoluble substance on the surface of the aqueous medium, a launder (18) for receiving an overflow of the insoluble substance and an outlet (20) for the insoluble substance in the launder. The apparatus (10) can be used in both countercurrent and co-current fashion. In a particular embodiment, the apparatus includes a mechanism for the intermittent dumping of the layer (31) of insoluble substance from the column (12).

Flotation method and apparatus

A method is provided for removing an anion from an aqueous liquid, such as a fermentation broth. The aqueous broth is contacted with a water-immiscible ion exchange liquid to extract the anion from the broth. The anion exchange liquid is then back extracted with an aqueous phase, to remove the anion, preferably for other uses.

A method for removing residual oil from oily water under pressure is provided. The method comprises flowing a liquid stream of an oily water downward through a vertically extended zone to remove the residual oil. A gas is injected into the lower end of the zone and at a rate sufficient to generate bubbles of a predetermined volume in the liquid stream. A sufficient pressure is maintained in the zone to control the rate of expansion of the bubbles to a volume compatible with oil droplets in the liquid stream during upward migration of the bubbles and the oil droplets. The rate of flow of the liquid stream from the lower end of the zone and the rate of flow of the gas from the upper end of the zone are regulated to collect residual oil from a quiescent volume within the upper portion of the zone.

Effective and environmentally benign liquid deicing and anti-icing compositions are provided by aqueous solutions of (a) alkali metal acetates, preferably KAc, (b) phosphate ion, e.g., H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 or K.sub.3 PO.sub.4, (c) soluble silicate,, e.g., K.sub.2 SiO.sub.3 or Na.sub.2 SiO.sub.3, (d) aromatic triazole, preferably tolyltriazole, (e) a dye which provides a visible hue, and (f) a compatible surfactant which lowers the surface tension to below about 50 dynes per sq. cm., prevents aggregation of components (a) to (f), and assures excellent dispersion across aircraft surfaces, preferablty octylphenoxypolyethoxy ethylphosphate. These compositions are environmentally safe and are useful in methods for deicing or preventative anti-icing of aircraft that meet AEA, ISO and SAE aviation standards. These compositions remain effective at low temperatures and are non-corrosive to metals used in aircraft construction.

Deicer/anti-icer compositions for aircraft

Liquid deicing and anti-icing compositions are provided by aqueous solutions of (a) alkali metal acetates, e.g., KAc or NaAc, (b) phosphate ion, e.g., K.sub.3 PO.sub.4, and (c) soluble silicate, e.g., K.sub.2 SiO.sub.3 or Na.sub.2 SiO.sub.3. These compositions are environmentally safe and meet FAA standards for metal corrosion resistance. They are effective at very low temperatures, e.g. -40.degree. F., and provide particularly effective deicing compositions when used in combination with granular CMA.

A process for recovering the metal values from spent hydroprocessing catalyst particles. The metal values will include at least one metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table and at least one metal of Group Vb or Group VIb of the Periodic Table. The spent catalyst particles are first roasted at between 400.degree. C. and 600.degree. C. and then contacted with a first aqueous solution of ammonia and an ammonium salt forming a first pregnant liquor. The once-leached spent hydroprocessing catalysts are contacted with a second aqueous solution of sulfur dioxide forming a second pregnant liquor. The metal values are precipitated from the second pregnant liquor with hydrogen sulfide and the precipitate is roasted with unroasted spent hydroprocessing catalysts. The metal values of Group Vb and Group VIb in the first pregnant liquor are transferred into a first organic solution by liquid ion exchange. The first organic solution is stripped by an aqueous strip solution and the metal values separated by sequential precipitation. The metals of Group VIII are separated and purified by serial liquid ion exchange.
