The top surface has a polygonal shape composed of a plurality of sides in a plan view as seen along the thickness direction. The top surface is provided with a projection projecting to a side opposite to the bottom surface along the thickness direction. The projection has a through-hole passing through the substrate along the thickness direction. The projection has a side surface contiguous to the top surface. The side surface is composed of a curved line protruding to a side opposite to the through-hole in the plan view as seen along the thickness direction.

A method for manufacturing a cutting tool according to one embodiment is a method for manufacturing a cutting tool, the cutting tool including a base material and a diamond single crystal material fixed to the base material, the diamond single crystal material having a rake face, a flank face continuous with the rake face, and a cutting edge formed by a ridgeline serving as a boundary between the rake face and the flank face. The method for manufacturing a cutting tool according to one form of the present disclosure includes a flank face irradiation step of applying a laser to the diamond single crystal material along the cutting edge from a side of the flank face. The laser has a pulse width of 1&#xd7;10seconds or less and a peak output of less than 1 W in the flank face irradiation step.

Method for manufacturing diamond single crystal cutting tool using laser pulses

A cutting tool according to an aspect of the present disclosure includes a cutting edge portion which contains at least one of cubic boron nitride and polycrystalline diamond. The cutting edge portion includes a rake face, a flank face, and a cutting edge. The flank face is contiguous to the rake face. The cutting edge is provided as a ridge line between the rake face and the flank face. The radius of curvature of the cutting edge is 2 &#x3bc;m or more and 8 &#x3bc;m or less.

Cutting tool and manufacturing method thereof

A cutting insert includes a bottom surface, a top surface opposite to the bottom surface, and a cutting edge portion. The cutting edge portion is located on the same side as the top surface. The cutting edge portion is formed of a sintered material including cubic boron nitride particles. A volume ratio of the cubic boron nitride particles to the sintered material is more than or equal to 50 percent. The cutting edge portion includes a rake face, a flank face contiguous to the rake face, and a cutting edge located along a ridgeline between the rake face and the flank face. The rake face is inclined toward the bottom surface so that a distance from the rake face to the bottom surface decreases gradually toward the cutting edge.

The edge portion includes an upper surface, a side surface, and a land surface. The side surface has a front side surface and a pair of lateral side surfaces. An intersection between the land surface and the front side surface forms a front cutting edge. An intersection between the land surface and each of the pair of lateral side surfaces form a corresponding one of a pair of lateral cutting edges. The edge portion contains 80 vol % or more of diamond. A chip breaker recess is provided between the upper surface and the land surface. The surfaces forming the chip breaker recess include a rake face and a breaker wall surface. The upper surface has a front edge portion opposite to the front cutting edge from the chip breaker recess. A pair of protruding portions are provided to extend from the front edge portion toward the front cutting edge.

A cutting tool according to an aspect of the present disclosure includes a cutting edge portion which contains at least one of cubic boron nitride and polycrystalline diamond. The cutting edge portion includes a flank face, a negative land contiguous to the flank face, and a cutting edge formed by a ridgeline between the flank face and the negative land. At least one of the negative land and the flank face is provided with a plurality of recesses and a projection. The projection is formed by arranging the edges of adjacent recesses in contact with each other.

There is provided a rotary tool including a rotary tool body and a blade provided to the rotary tool body and having a cutting edge, the blade containing 80% by volume or more of diamond, and the blade including a land surface extending along the cutting edge, and a chip breaker having a recess located opposite to the cutting edge with the land surface therebetween.
