A printer communication system includes a printer (,) having a printer controller (,) with memory (,) and a processor (,). The printer (,) receives and transmits information through a port (,) to which a host computer (,) is coupled. The printer controller (,) may be programmed to be operable to receive configuration-related commands through the port (,), process the configuration-related commands received by the port immediately provided that a command is a safe command to process while the printer (,) is busy processing a print job. The printer (,) may respond to the host computer (,) by indicating that the change was successful or that the printer (,) must be taken offline before the change may be made. The printer controller (,) is programmed to be remotely taken offline and put back online. A symbol set list command may be used by printer (,) to send symbol sets to host computer (,). Font information may also be sent to a host computer (,) by a printer (,) so that a font table including associated symbol sets may be constructed in computer (,).

Printer communication system and method

A networked system having a host computer and multiple printers with bi-directional communications capabilities is provided in which the setup (configuration) of one printer can be easily communicated to another printer, using NPAP messages. The host computer can be used by a Network Administrator to 'read' the setup or configuration information inside each of the printers connected to the network that have the required NPAP bi-directional communications capability. This setup information, once communicated to the host computer, can be stored in a long-term memory, such as a hard disk drive, for future reference. The setup information can also be communicated to one or more printers connected to the network, and such printers can be configured by the setup information in which that information is used either as their initial setup information, or as a modified setup. The Network Administrator can use a single command that specifies precisely which printers are to receive that setup information, and all specified printers will automatically be reconfigured with the new setup.

Method and apparatus for configuring the physical setup of multiple

An improved printing system is provided having at least one host computer and a printer in which the printer acquires print job accounting information and communicates it to the host computer via NPAP messages. A host computer downloads print job data to the printer through a communications port on the printer (i.e., either a parallel port, serial port, or network port), and as the printer prints the print job that it received from the host computer, the printer temporarily stores job accounting information. At the end of the print job, the printer communicates that job accounting information back to armed host computers via a bi-directional communications port, including typical information such as: the job identifier number, job processing time, number of sheets of paper from each paper source, number of impressions from each paper source (either one-sided or two-sided impressions), the port identifier, the network user name, the name of the print job (as specified), and the printer's serial number. Since the data is being accumulated at the printer, rather than at the host computer, there is no estimating by a host-resident program to acquire these statistics, and no data base merging (from several host computers) is required to categorize all of the data for one particular printer. Furthermore, the print jobs need not pass through a network queue in order to be detected and accounted for.

Method and apparatus for configuring multiple printers on a network

An improved printing system having a host computer and a printer is provided in which the printer has a memory of sufficient size capable of temporarily storing multiple print jobs. The host computer can be utilized by a user or a Network Administrator to 'view' the contents of a print queue within the printer, in which the queue holds one or more print jobs as these print jobs await printing. The host can inform the printer when a particular print job in the queue is to be deleted or undeleted. Deleted jobs are effectively removed from the queue and are not printed; however, such deleted jobs can be reinstated (or 'undeleted') during the time interval between the delete command being received at the printer and when this job would have become the immediate subject for being interpreted, and the particular print job (which really never lost its place in the queue) returns to the queue and has its data sent to the interpreter when its turn to be dispatched occurs, and finally becomes printed. The various stages of a print job migrating through the printer are used to inform the user/Network Administrator at the host as to the status of the entire print queue, upon request by the user/Network Administrator. The list of current jobs in the printer's queue and the 'location' of each of these print jobs is displayed on the monitor at the host in a form that identifies the job name and the status of each job. In one preferred embodiment, a 'list box' of the host's display monitor can present up to twenty-five (25) current jobs in the order that they will be operated on by the printer.

Method and apparatus for providing a printer having internal queue job

An improved networked system having a host computer and multiple printers is provided in which the printers have a bi-directional data communications capability and have at least one memory device capable of storing print data and other types of data files. The host computer can be utilized by a user or a Network Administrator to 'read' the contents of each memory device on each printer connected to the network that has the NPAP bi-directional communications capability. The user/Network Administrator can de-fragment data files (e.g., print job files) on a flash RAM memory device, or can format one of the memory devices of a printer (which deletes all of the files stored on that memory device). Furthermore, the user/Network Administrator can transfer a file from the memory of one of the printers on the network to the memory of a second of the printers on the network. When a given resource management function has been completed, an updated resource directory is automatically displayed at the host which includes all of the changes resulting from the earlier resource management function command. Once the printer receives an NPAP command of the type that accesses the resource management capabilities of the printer, the printer's Emulation Manager will control the execution of the resource management function that has been received. The Emulation Manager communicates the command along with the required arguments to the Common File System, which performs the actual data manipulation of any of the files in the memory devices.

Method and apparatus for providing remote printer resource management

An improved printer is provided that improves the response time before jobs are printer by providing a 'fast data path' for certain print jobs while also storing on a hard disk all incoming print job data. This 'fast data path' is especially useful in situations where the incoming print job lacks an 'end of file' code, which could otherwise hold up the processing of either this print job or later print jobs. Once the printer becomes relatively busy, and begins to accumulate a 'queue' of print jobs waiting to be processed and printed, the printer will automatically store all of the print job data on the non-volatile memory (e.g., a hard disk) before that same data is sent to the processing circuitry. Since it is important to utilize the printer's capabilities efficiently, the printer can allow a 'small' print job to be processed and printed after being received from one input port of the printer, while a much larger print job is still being accumulated from a second input port, even though the larger job began to be received first. Since all print job data received by the printer of the present invention is stored in a non-volatile memory, the capability exists for recovering such print jobs after the occurrence of a power failure. Upon power restoration, a 'Header File' that contains status information about stored print jobs will be inspected, and if a print job was never completely printed, the printer will now begin printing the entire job. In this manner, the printer can guarantee that the entire job will be printed in one intact grouping of sheets of paper.

Bidirectional communications between a host computer and a printer connected to the host, either locally or by way of a network, are used to provide a user of the host with access to a substantially real-time, visual and functional replica of the operator panel of the printer. The user may view the replica to access all data available through the printer operator panel. Using a mouse or other input device, the user of the host computer can also effectively actuate any pushbuttons or other operator panel control devices depicted as part of the replica.

Multiple host computers on a network are connected through an interface, or network adapter, to a printer having a printer controller capable of bi-directional communication with the computers on the network. The interface communicates with the network computers in a manner to present a different virtual printer to each host computer. The interface maintains a data set for each host computer which includes designations of the types of printer status information of interest to that host. The interface is capable of communicating with the printer controller to obtain a range of printer status information, and the interface communicates with each host computer to present printer status information of interest to that computer based upon that computer's data set. In the disclosed form of the invention, the interface notifies each interested host computer concerning types of printer status information to which changes have occurred; and the host computers communicate requests for more detailed information. This more detailed information is then obtained from the printer controller and provided to the interested host computers by the interface.
