An optical cable harness assembly and method are provided. The optical cable harness assembly includes at least one optical cable harness having a termination end; at least one electrical connector having connector pins; and at least one active connector conversion unit coupled between the termination end of the optical harness cable and the electrical connector. A method for retrofitting an optical harness assembly into an existing platform is disclosed. The method includes removing a legacy wiring harness; installing an optical harness assembly having electrical connectors and an active connector conversion unit; and testing the compatibility of connector pins of the electrical connector to the active connector conversion unit.

Optical harness assembly and method

An optical harness assembly and method are provided. The optical harness assembly includes at least one optical harness cable having a termination end; at least one electrical connector having connector pins; and at least one active connector conversion unit coupled between the termination end of the optical harness cable and the electrical connector. The method includes: identifying electrical signals present on each pin of each electrical connector presentation; programmatically adjusting an interface based on the identified electrical signals present; and mapping the electrical connector signals to digital signals. The method may further include: providing a personality adaptor coupled between the electrical connector pin outs and signal conditioners; configuring the personality adaptor based on the identified electrical signals present on each pin out of each electrical connector presentation; and providing configured electrical connector presentation signals to the interface.

An optical harness assembly and method are provided. The optical harness assembly includes at least one optical harness cable having a termination end; at least one electrical connector having connector pins; and at least one active connector conversion unit coupled between the termination end of the optical harness cable and the electrical connector. A method for retrofitting an optical harness assembly into an existing platform is disclosed. The method includes removing a legacy wiring harness; installing an optical harness assembly having electrical connectors and an active connector conversion unit; and testing the compatibility of connector pins of the electrical connector to the active connector conversion unit. In another embodiment the method includes: identifying electrical signals present on each pin of each electrical connector presentation; programmatically adjusting an interface based on the identified electrical signals present; and mapping the electrical connector signals to digital signals. Alternatively, the method may further include: providing a personality adaptor coupled between the electrical connector pin outs and signal conditioners; configuring the personality adaptor based on the identified electrical signals present on each pin out of each electrical connector presentation; and providing configured electrical connector presentation signals to the interface.

A method and apparatus for determining the dispersion characteristics of minimum phase filters using substantially only an amplitude response of a minimum phase filter under test includes fitting an amplitude spectrum of the minimum phase filter with a substantially straight line curve, and determining the dispersion characteristics of the minimum phase filter using the straight line curve and the relationships determined by the inventors. Various inventive equations determined by the inventors representative of the relationship between an amplitude response of a minimum phase filter and the dispersion characteristics of the minimum phase filter are used for determining the dispersion characteristics of the minimum phase filter.

Method for determining the dispersion characteristics of minimum phase filters

A single-stage all-pass optical filter is disclosed that may be applied to generate a large tunable delay of an optical pulse train. The all-pass optical filter includes an input port for receiving an input optical pulse having a regular repetition rate; an output port; a splitter/combiner; and one feedback path. A plurality of frequency-dependent time delay periods are applied to the input optical pulse so that the filter is characterized by a time-delay spectrum having a plurality of delay peaks. The free-spectral range (FSR) of the filter, i.e., the spacing between the delay peaks, is matched to the regular repetition rate of the input optical pulse. This matching is accomplished by the FSR being equal to the repetition rate or offset from the repetition rate to a sufficiently small degree that each frequency of the pulse train will fall within the bandwidth of one of the plurality of delay peaks. This single-stage all-pass optical filter is advantageous for correcting linear chirp of a pulsed laser or synchronizing control signals in an optical time-division multiplexer/demultiplexer system.

A method an apparatus for symmetric line coding is provided where a binary input signal d is received; a value for each of a pair of binary bits p and q are dynamically defined in response to the input stream; and a pair of output bitstreams vand vare dynamically generated in accordance with the following: if d=1, then v=p and v=p, and if d=0, then v=(1&#x2212;q) and v=q. Symmetric line coding

An optical add-drop module (OADM) includes in the through-path exactly two thin-film filters (TFFs) having respective passbands that approximately coincide in wavelength. Each TFF has a respective across-the-band isolation level, representing the smallest isolation achieved at any wavelength within the passband. The respective reflection characteristic curves of the two TFFs are at least partially complementary, such that the OADM isolation level exceeds the logarithmic sum of the across-the-band isolation levels of the respective TFFs.

An optical amplifier includes a chalcogenide glass optical waveguide having optical input and output ports, coupled to the chalcogenide glass optical waveguide, a pump optical waveguide, and a wavelength-tunable pump laser. A waveguide structure for use with a pump laser is disclosed that is designed to counteract the decrease in pump power density. The waveguide structure may comprise an erbium-doped waveguide amplifier, a nonlinear waveguide wavelength converter device, or an optical fiber. The waveguide structure has a waveguide region that is tapered over a pump propagation distance, said distance being defined as a predetermined distance between a first pump site and a second pump site over which the pump light is propagated for signal amplification or conversion. The taper reduces the depletion in pump power as compared with prior art systems and may be kept substantially constant over the pump propagation length, thereby counteracting pump depletion.

An all-pass optical filter which reduces the dispersion of optical pulses transmitted therethrough is disclosed. The all-pass optical filter reduces the dispersion of optical pulses by applying a desired phase response to optical pulses transmitted therethrough. The all-pass optical filter also has a frequency independent amplitude response. The all-pass optical filter has a structure which includes at least one feedback path, a splitter/combiner, an input port, and an output port.

All-pass optical filters

In accordance with the invention, an optical all-pass filter comprises a substrate-supported multilayer waveguiding structure comprising a first layer including a waveguiding optical ring resonator, a second layer including an optical grating optically coupled to the ring resonator, and a third layer including a relatively straight waveguide optically coupled to the grating. The waveguide can be made with standard index material matched to an optical communication system, and the ring can be made of higher index material. The grating sandwiched between them provides phase matching between these two index mismatched structures, facilitating efficient power transfer between them.

Optical communication system including broadband all-pass filter for dispersion compensation

In a time-division-multiplex system, a relatively high-rate optical signal stream comprising multiple interleaved signal sequences is applied to one end of an elongated waveguide that includes multiple photodetectors disposed along the longitudinal extent of the waveguide. Probe pulses at a relatively low rate are applied to the other end of the waveguide in a synchronized fashion to cause two-photon non-linear absorption in successive respective photodetectors as each propagating probe pulse overlaps successive different signals of each sequence. In that way, electrical output signals are provided from each photodetector at the relatively low probe-pulse rate.

Optical time-division-multiplex system

Waveguides according to this invention have a chalcogenide glass core that comprises Se and one or both of As and Ge, and further comprises one or more dopant elements selected from the elements that cause a change in optical energy gap E,of the glass core. The amount of dopant is selected such that E,is equal to or less than a 2-photon energy 2h&ngr;, where h is Planck's constant and &ngr;&equals;c/&lgr;, where c is the speed of light in vacuum and &lgr; is an operating wavelength. The dopant elements furthermore are selected such that the chalcogenide glass core has a nonlinear refractive index n,greater than 200n,(SiO,), where n,(SiO,) is the nonlinear index of silica at &lgr;. Typically, &lgr; is about 1.55 &mgr;m. Exemplary, the dopant elements are selected from Sb, Bi, Sn, Pb, In, Tl, Cu, Ag and S. Currently preferred dopants are Te, Sb, Tl, Cu and Ag. Waveguides according to the invention are advantageously used in all-optical switches, optical logic elements and other means for optical processing of optical pulses.

In an optical fiber communication system a pulse reshaper can transform a distorted input light pulse into a reshaped output light pulse. The disclosed pulse reshaper is an all-optical pulse reshaper that comprises an optical waveguide having an effective length, the waveguide connecting the input and the output and comprising optical non-linear material, with a periodic variation of an effective refractive index of the optical waveguide. The optically non-linear material and the periodic variation are selected such that the reshaped output light pulse is a substantially transform-limited output light pulse.

Article comprising means for optical pulse reshaping

Optical pulse compression is of importance in very high bit rate optical fiber communication systems. We are disclosing an adiabatic optical pulse compressor that can achieve substantial compression by means of a relatively short (e.g., about 100 cm) chirped periodic structure, exemplarily an apodized and chirped fiber Bragg grating. The input pulse to the periodic structure typically are not soliton pulses, but the passage through the periodic structure results in transformation of the pulses into substantially transform-limited soliton pulses that are available (typically after appropriate modification) for transmission through conventional optical fiber towards utilization means. The input pulses can be generated by any applicable method, e.g., by combining the cw outputs of two lasers that differ with regard to the frequency of their output.
