Pentabromobenzyl acrylate (PBBMA), a useful flame retardant insoluble in water, is provided as an aqueous fluid for industrial applications. The fluid is an easy to handle, stable suspension of finely ground PBBMA in water.

A process for the fire retardation of textile materials comprising applying to the textile materials aqueous suspensions of finely ground pentabromobenzyl acrylate particles, suspending agents chosen from xanthan gums, anionic purified suspending agents, nonionic purified suspending agents, sodium montmorillonite, naphthalene sulfonic acid-formaldehyde condensate sodium salt, sodium, calcium or ammonium salts of sulphonated lignin, acrylic acids/acrylic acids ester copolymer neutralized-sodium polycarboxyl, and wetting agents chosen from alkyl ethers, arylalkyl ethers, fatty acid diester and sorbitan monoesters, and polyoxyethylene compounds.

Methods of fire retarding textiles with aqueous suspensions of pentabromobenzyl acrylate

Suspensions of PBBMA, characterized in that they comprise PBBMA in the form of finely ground particles and contain suspending agents chosen from among xanthene gums, anionic or nonionic purified, sodium modified montmorilonite, naphthalene sulfonic acid-formaldehyde condensate sodium salt, sodium or calcium or ammonium salts of sulfonated lignin, acrylic acids/acrylic acids ester copolymer neutralized-sodium polycarboxyl, and wetting agents chosen from among alkyl ether, alkylaryl ether, fatty acid diester and sorbitan monoester types, polyoxyethylene (POE) compounds.

Suspensions of PBBMA, characterized in that they comprise PBBMA in the form of finely ground particles and contain suspending agents chosen from among xanthane gums, anionic or nonionic purified, sodium modified montmorilonite, naphthalene sulfonic acid-formaldehyde condensate sodium salt, sodium or calcium or ammonium salts of sulfonated lignin, acrylic acids/acrylic acids ester copolymer neutralized&#x2014;sodium polycarboxyl, and wetting agents chosen from among alkyl ether, alkylaryl ether, fatty acid diester and sorbitan monoester types, polyoxyethylene (POE) compounds.

Hydrogen peroxide is produced by a process which uses solid, insoluble, supported anthraquinone as catalyst. The supported anthraquinone is converted to supported anthrahydroquinone utilizing soluble reducing agentsor by hydrogenation with a hydrogen-donating organic substrate such as an alcohol, followed by reaction with oxygen, to regenerate anthraquinone and to form hydrogen peroxide, which can be solvent extracted from the solid catalyst.

Production of hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is produced by a process which uses as catalyst a polymer which has anthraquinone/anthrahydroquinone groups attached to it, and which exhibits differential solubility in water. The polymer is water soluble under one set of conditions, e.g. temperature range, but insoluble under another set of such conditions. Accordingly, the polymer bound anthrahydroquinone groups are oxidized in aqueous solution to form anthraquinone groups and hydrogen peroxide, which dissolves in the aqueous medium. Then the conditions, e.g. temperature, are changed to precipitate the polymer, which can readily be separated off, ready for re-use.

Aqueous phase production of hydrogen peroxide and catalysts for use

Hydrogen peroxide is produced by a process which uses solid, insoluble, supported anthraquinone as catalyst. The catalyst is reduced to supported anthrahydroquinone using a hydrogen-donating organic substrate such as an alcohol, followed by reaction with oxygen, suitably photochemical reaction, to regenerate anthraquinone and to form hydrogen peroxide, which can be solvent extracted from the solid catalyst.

A process for the production of novel polyimide polymers and copolymers which comprises reacting a cyclooctadiene-1,2,5,6-tetracarboxylic acid bisanhydride, or a derivative of same, with an amine, or mixture of amines, of the formula H.sub.2 N--A--NH.sub.2 wherein A designates an aliphatic, an aromatic, an araliphatic or a heterocyclic group, which may be substituted. Novel polyimides obtained by such process.
