Disclosed herein are various techniques and devices for detecting a level of fluid within a fluid collection receptacle. These techniques and devices may further determine a flow rate of fluid entering the fluid collection receptacle or a volume of fluid collected within the fluid collection receptacle. Sensors, including pressure sensors, may be installed in, on, or within the fluid collection receptacle to detect information about the liquid within the receptacle including fluid level, flow rate, and volume.

Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and devices for collecting a fluid for use in connection with a fluid pumping device such as a breast pump. A fluid collection receptacle includes a rigid connector attached to the fluid collection receptacle. The rigid connector is connectable to a breast pump manifold. The fluid collection receptacle further includes a liquid tight seal in the fluid collection receptacle. The fluid collection receptacle may be constructed of a flexible plastic.

Disclosed herein are various techniques and devices for detecting a level of fluid within a fluid collection receptacle. In one embodiment, a pressure sensor connected to a bottle is provided. The pressure sensor detects air pressure in the bottle as the bottle is filled with a liquid and provides information to determine a volume of the liquid in the bottle.

The smart breast pump system may further include a mobile device which wirelessly receives sensor data from the at least one sensor. Disclosed herein is a breast pump. The breast pump includes a milk capture system that includes a cupped flange. The cupped flange includes a nipple recess for receiving a nipple. The breast pump further includes a manifold which may be removably connected to the cupped flange. The manifold includes a nipple cavity in which vacuum suction is applied to a nipple. The manifold further includes a spout that drains milk away from the vacuum suction. The breast pump further includes a milk collection system which is removably connected to the manifold. The milk collection system includes a milk receptacle for containing milk expressed from a breast. Further disclosed is a breast pump system which includes a milk capture system, a manifold, and a milk collection system.

Disclosed herein is a breast pump sensor network. The breast pump sensor network includes an emitter disposed within a bodily fluid capture system and a detector disposed within the bodily fluid capture system. Further disclosed is a method for controlling the breast pump sensor network which includes emitting a beam of electromagnetic radiation within a bodily fluid capture system, detecting one or more drops of body fluid within the bodily fluid capture system, determining a bodily fluid flow rate based at least on the detected one or more drops of bodily fluid, and providing the determined bodily fluid flow rate to at least one user.
