An optical transceiver configured to operate in a host device includes an electrical interface communicatively coupled to the host device to interface electrically with the host device, wherein the optical transceiver is compliant with a Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) which is supported by the host device; optical transceiver components communicatively coupled to the electrical interface, wherein the optical transceiver components are configured to optically interface signals with a second optical transceiver to form an optical link; and electronic dispersion compensation circuitry communicatively coupled to the optical transceiver components and configured to electronically compensate for optical fiber chromatic and/or polarization mode dispersion associated with the optical link, separate and independent from the host device.

The present invention provides systems and methods for a receiver threshold optimization loop to provide self-contained automatic adjustment in a compact module, such as a pluggable optical transceiver. The receiver threshold optimization loop utilizes a performance metric associated with the receiver, such as FEC, to optimize performance of the receiver. The receiver is optimized through a change in the receiver threshold responsive to the performance metric. Advantageously, the present invention provides improved receiver performance through a continuous adjustment that is self-contained within the receiver, such as within a pluggable optical transceiver compliant to a multi-source agreement (MSA). The receiver threshold optimization loop can include a fine and a coarse sweep of adjustment from an initial setting.

The present invention provides integrated framing in pluggable optical transceivers to extend the OTN framework into metro, regional, and core applications. Additionally, the present invention provides integrated FEC and optical layer OAM&P features into pluggable optical transceivers. This integration is done with existing pluggable transceivers defined by MSAs such as, but not limited to, XFP, XPAK, XENPAK, X2, XFP-E, and SFP+. Further, the present invention can be extended to new, emerging pluggable transceiver standards and specifications. The integration of framing, FEC, and optical layer OAM&P is done so that the pluggable transceiver preserves the specifications in the MSAs. This allows systems designed for existing pluggable transceivers to realize carrier-grade, robust performance without needed additional equipment such as transponders and without redesigning host equipment such as the line card to support new specifications.
