Power limiting in a processor-based system based on allocating power budgets for different sub-systems based on multiple time-based power limits is disclosed. The processor-based system has multiple power consuming sub-systems (e.g., non-processing unit (PU) and PU sub-systems) that demand and consume power from a power source of the processor-based system. To limit overall power consumption of the processor-based system over different time-based power limits, the processor-based system includes a power limiter circuit. The power limiter circuit is configured to manage multiple, different time-based (e.g., time constant) power limits for the processor-based system and to allocate corresponding power limit budgets to constrain power consumption of different sub-systems based on the multiple time-based power limits. The power limiter circuit can be configured to constrain power consumption of a PU sub-system to a total PU sub-system power limit budget based on the multiple time-based power limits.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide apparatus and techniques for configuring memory in an effort to reduce power consumption. For example, certain aspects of the present disclosure may provide an apparatus having a processing system configured to determine an operating mode of an application executing on the processing system. The operating mode may be one of a plurality of operating modes of the application, and each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes may correspond to a different configuration of memory. In certain aspects, the configurations of memory may correspond to different portions of memory that are active or inactive. In certain aspects, the apparatus may also include a memory control module configured to configure the memory based on the determined operating mode of the application.

Resource state sets corresponding to the application states are maintained in memory. A request may be issued for a processor operating in a first application state corresponding to the first resource state set to transition to a second application state corresponding to the second resource state set. A start time to begin transitioning resources to states indicated in the second resource state set is scheduled based upon an estimated amount of processing time to complete transitioning. A process is begun by which the states of resources are switched from states indicated by the first resource state set to states indicated by the second resource state set. Scheduling the process to begin at a time that allows the process to be completed just in time for the resource states to be immediately available to the processor upon entering the second application state helps minimize adverse effects of resource latency.

Methods, systems and devices configured to add synchronization to the entry and exit from low power modes in asynchronous operating systems on a multiprocessor system. A synchronizing agent tracks the requested sleep and wake up times of the different asynchronous operating systems executing on different cores of the same system on chip or multicore processor. The sleep/wake up times of some cores/operating systems may be delayed in order to synchronize the sleep/wake up times of two or more of the asynchronous operating systems executing on the multiprocessor system.

A method and system for managing requests among resources within a portable computing device include a scheduler receiving data from a client for scheduling a plurality of requests. Each request identifies at least one resource and a requested deadline. Next, data from the client is stored by the scheduler in a database. The scheduler then determines times and a sequence for processing the requests based on requested deadlines in the requests and based on current states of resources within the portable computing device. The scheduler then communicates the requests to the resources at the determined times and according to the determined sequence. The scheduler, at its discretion, may schedule a request after its requested deadline in response to receiving a new request command from a client. The scheduler may allow a sleep set corresponding to a sleep processor state to power off a processor.
