Apparatus for manufacturing multi-layer metal feedstock material for stamping shaped parts eliminates the need for rolls of metal at the stamping site. Multilayer metal feedstock material is assembled from multiple rolls of metal stock, then folded in a zig zag fashion, or 'Z-fold' configuration, whereby the multilayer metal assembly is stacked vertically, usually on conventional pallets, for ease of moving with a forklift or otherwise. The multilayer metal z-fold stack of material is then transported to a parts stamping operation where the material is used as it unfolds as a continuous feed to machines to produce shaped multilayer metal parts. This invention is most useful in making multilayer metal foil z-fold feedstock material and using the z-fold material as continuous feed to processes for making shaped multilayer metal foil parts. The layers may have non-metal layers of material, such as fiber, between the metal layers or on the outside of the metal layers. At the location of making the shaped parts from the feedstock material, the layers of the z-fold feedstock material may be separated and one or more of the layers treated, textured, embossed, etc., then reassembled into the stack which is fed to the stamping operation, all on a continuous basis. This enables the z-fold feedstock material to be made from smooth metal layers, which increases the density of the material and reduces the volume space required for storage of the z-fold material.

Apparatus and method for manufacture of multilayer metal products

A structure for encapsulating and protecting fiber insulation material as well as other materials in multicompartment devices in order to provide unitized material which can be applied to any surface desired for insulation or other purposes. A first sheet of material is formed with pockets or depressions in the sheet which are adapted for receiving the material desired to be unitized and a second sheet placed over the first sheet, and the two sheets are attached together in the areas between the pockets or depressions thus encapsulating the material in the pockets. The material is unitized by placing the material in individual sealed metal foil containers or compartments, then the individual containers of unitized material are attached in matrix form to a continuous sheet, such as positioning the containers in openings in the continuous sheet. The product can be applied to any surface desired for insulation or other purposes. Preferably a multilayer metal foil material is employed in the structures.

Multicompartment structure for insulation and other materials

A rigid structural foil and a method for forming a rigid structural foil is provided. The structural foil includes at least two layers of metal sheets, valley areas and spacers. The metal sheet layers include metal foil having a thickness of 0.006 in. The valley areas are disposed between compressed and uncompressed portions of the structural foil formed during compression of portions of the structural foil. In addition to the valley areas, the structural foil includes spacers. The spacers within the metal sheet layers provide spacing between portions of the metal layers such that the structural foil functions as both a heat shield and an acoustic shield.

Flexible corrugated multilayer metal foil shields and method of making

A forge/swage formed three dimensional multilayer metal foil shield having areas therein where the layers are in a spaced apart relationship, areas therein where the layers are tensioned or stretched, and areas therein where the layers are compressed and interlocked together by folding, rolling, wrinkling, curling, coiling, crimping and the like. The multilayer metal foil shield is formed by forge/swage shaping in an appropriate mold apparatus a preform of a stack of metal foil layers having gaps between the layers. The gaps are provided by embossments in the layers or by spacers between the layers. The forge formed multilayer metal foil shields have utility as heat shields and acoustic shields, particularly on vehicles. The forge formed multilayer metal foil shields are mounted on automobile underbody areas, such as the bottom of the floor pan of the passenger compartment, to provide heat and sound insulation. Other automotive uses include fire wall, exhaust tunnel, motor mount and exhaust down pipe. The three dimensional shields include multilayer metal sheet formed structures. Intermediate beaded or rolled edge multilayer metal preforms are made for transport to the final three dimensional stamping operation.

Shaped multilayer metal foil shield structures and method of making

An insulated appliance which provides a simple, low cost product and method for containing fiber insulation for application to appliances. A combination of an appliance, fiber insulation layer applied to the exterior surface of a wall of the appliance and a multilayer metal foil adhesively bonded to the outside of the fiber layer. This combination is conveniently formed by adhesively bonding the fiber layer to the multilayer metal foil, then applying the fiber layer to the exterior surface of the wall of the appliance. In the appliance final assembly, the fiber layer is contained between the surface of the wall of the appliance and the multilayer metal foil. Optionally, the fiber is contained between two or more layers of multilayer metal foil, whereby one of the multilayer metal foil is in contact with the wall of the appliance.

A flexible multilayer metal structure includes using multiple layers interlocked to form folds holding the layers together. These folds can extend into non-edge portions of the multilayer structure so that the multilayer structure defines air gaps that aid in producing a heat-shielding effect.

This invention relates to improved polymer-pressure sensitive adhesive combinations, particularly in the form of laminates, and methods of producing same. This invention improves the bond strength of the pressure sensitive adhesive to the polymer layer by priming the polymer surface with a curable urethane primer before applying the pressure sensitive adhesive to the polymer surface. If the polymer surface is not 'active' to the curable urethane primer, the polymer surface is first activated with a silicon-containing treating agent. The laminates of this invention have superior bond strength, especially longterm bond strength. Of particular interest are the embodiments of this invention wherein the polymer is a silicone foam and the pressure sensitive adhesive is either acrylic or silicone adhesive.

Pressure sensitive adhesive laminate

A multilayer metal sheet-polymer composite wherein the multilayer metal sheet side provides heat resistance and heat protection for the polymer side. The multilayer metal sheet component preferably comprises aluminum or stainless steel foils bonded to the polymeric component to form articles such as, conduits, panels, equipment housings and cooking devices.

Bonded metal-plastic composite structures

A flexible corrugated multilayer metal foil structure comprising a stack of metal foil layers which are formed in corrugations extending across a stack of the metal foil layers, wherein all of the layers have the same corrugated pattern and shape as a result of the stack being shaped in corrugations or the layers being separately shaped in corrugations then nested into a stack. A portion of the corrugations of the stack of metal foil layers can be compressed to fold the layers together whereby the layers are interlocked together in overlapping relationship.

A baking system comprising a baking pan and a baking pan support wherein the support member is formed from a metal sheet or a stack of a plurality of metal sheets and is formed with an opening in the central portion of the support and the pan support member is formed to support the perimeter of the baking pan. The pan support member is formed so that it provides an air gap, insulation or shielding around the perimeter portion of baking pan. The baking system of this invention thereby provides full heat transfer in the central portion of the baking pan while insulating or shielding the perimeter portion of the baking pan thus resulting in more even baking. The baking system of this invention is particularly useful in pizza baking to prevent the burning or over baking of the pizza crust while providing sufficient baking for the center portion of the pizza.

Baking pan system

A lightweight and resilient heat barrier laminate which provides sound and vibration dampening. The laminate has a density less than about 5 lb/ft.sup.3 and a total thickness of no greater than about 1 inch. The laminate includes a first metal foil having high heat conductivity and a first batt of insulating nonwoven fiber material having a thickness of at least about 0.03 inch. The first batt is an outermost layer of the laminate which is adhesively bonded to a first side of the first metal foil. The laminate also includes a second metal foil and a second batt of insulating nonwoven fiber material different from the material of the first batt. The second batt has a thickness of at least twice as thick as the first batt and is adhesively bonded to a second side of the first metal foil. The second metal foil is an outermost layer of the laminate, has high heat conductivity, is in contact with the second batt of insulating material and can be in contact with a carpet.

Heat barrier laminate

A lightweight and resilient heat barrier laminate which provides sound and vibration dampening. The laminate has a density less than about 5 lb/ft.sup.3 and a total thickness of no greater than about 1 inch.
