A cartridge reader device includes an RFID unit that reads cartridge memory (CM) data from an RFID tag of a data cartridge, a bar code unit that reads a bar code of the data cartridge, and a housing that encloses the RFID unit and the bar code unit. The housing encloses the RFID unit and the bar code unit and defines at least one receiving area configured to accept the data cartridge and enables the bar code unit to read the bar code data from the bar code of the data cartridge. The reader device further includes a pair of mirrors positioned within the housing that direct light emitted by the bar code reader to the bar code of the data cartridge along a u-shaped path.

A cartridge reader device includes an RFID unit that reads cartridge memory (CM) data from an RFID tag of a data cartridge, a bar code unit that reads a bar code of the data cartridge, and a housing that encloses the RFID unit and the bar code unit. The housing defines a first receiving area configured to accept the data cartridge when the data cartridge is enclosed in a case, which enables the bar code unit to read the bar code data from the bar code of the data cartridge when the data cartridge is enclosed in the case, and a second receiving area configured to accept the data cartridge when the data cartridge is not enclosed in the case, which enables the bar code unit to read the bar code data from the bar code of the data cartridge when the data cartridge is not enclosed in the case.

A portable memory housing includes a first housing section and a second housing section that couples to the first housing section to define an enclosure for portable memory components. At least one of the housing sections includes a prong extending from an edge of the housing section and an other of the housing sections defines a slot configured to receive the prong. The prong includes at least one flat that is parallel and at least one flat that is perpendicular to the edge of its respective housing section. The slot is defined by a parallel wall configured to abut the parallel flat of the prong and limit relative lateral movement of the first and second housing sections, and a perpendicular wall configured to abut the perpendicular flat of the prong to impede separation of the first housing section from the second housing section.

A data storage tape cartridge is disclosed. The data storage tape cartridge includes a housing, a reel assembly including a hub rotatably disposed within the housing, a storage tape wound onto the tape reel assembly, and a leader attached to a leading end of the storage tape. In this regard, the storage tape includes a primary tape portion extending from the hub to a first end and a transition tape coupled to the first end of the primary tape portion and extending to a leading end, wherein the transition tape is thicker than the primary tape portion.

A flash memory device is disclosed. The flash memory device includes a housing enclosing a memory board, a serial port extending from the housing and electrically coupled to the memory board, and a swivel cap rotatably coupled and removably attached to the housing. In this regard, the swivel cap is rotatable between a closed position covering the serial port and an open position exposing the serial port, and the swivel cap is rotatable to at least one removal position enabling a separation of the swivel cap from the housing.

A data storage cartridge includes housing, a hard drive, and a connection assembly. The hard drive is stored within the housing and includes a non-tape storage medium and an electrical data connector configured to provide access to the non-tape storage medium. The electrical data connector includes a first number of connection terminals. The connection assembly is positioned within the housing and is coupled with each of the connection terminals of the electrical data connector. The connection assembly includes a second number of electrical targets spaced from and in electrical communication with the electrical data connector wherein the first number is greater than the second number. The electrical targets provide an interface for externally accessing the storage medium via the connection assembly and the electrical data connector.

A data storage device is disclosed. The data storage device includes a continuous band, and a memory device assembly disposes within the continuous band. The continuous band defines an internal housing recess formed by opposing sides extending between first and second major surfaces, and an access window formed in one of the first and second major surfaces and communicating with the internal housing recess. In this regard, the memory device assembly is disposed in the internal housing recess, and a flexing of the continuous band exposes a data/power port of the memory device assembly through the access window.

The invention is directed to techniques to substantially reduce or eliminate detachment of data storage tape from data storage cartridges. A data storage cartridge may include a housing enclosing a spool with data storage tape spooled on the spool. A region of the data storage tape extends from the spool to an opening in the housing. An end of the data storage tape is held at the opening to allow tape drives to grasp the data storage tape and retrieve data stored on the data storage tape. When dropped, the data storage cartridge experiences impact loads. The techniques described herein rotate the spool to generate slack such that the region of data storage tape comprises substantially no tension. In this way, the techniques prevent detachment of the data storage tape from the opening due to the impact loads.

A single reel data storage tape cartridge is described that includes a housing having a tape access window. A single tape reel assembly is rotatably disposed within the housing and includes a hub about which a storage tape is wrapped. A tape guide is disposed within the housing adjacent the single tape reel assembly, opposite the tape access window, and is configured to define a pathway of the storage tape from the single tape reel assembly to the tape access window and limit lateral motion of the storage tape.
