A process for obtaining a substantially pure enantiomer of an hydrocarbyl amine is described. The process utilizes first an enantiomerically enriched mixture the of hydrocarbyl amine obtained from kinetic resolution, diastereomeric crystallization or asymmetric synthesis processes. This enriched mixture is reacted with an inorganic acid producing a salt that has the following properties: 1) has at least one eutectic point; 2) a composition that is not at the eutectic point; and 3) a eutectic composition that is closer to the racemic composition than is the eutectic composition of said hydrocarbyl, or be a solid where the salt is a liquid. A substantially pure, enantiomeric salt is separated, leaving a mother liquor comprising the solvent and the hydrocarbyl amine enriched in the other enantiomer.

Enantiomeric resolution

Compounds of formula ##STR1## where n is an integer from 1 to 12, R and R.sub.1 are the same or different and are hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 linear or branched alkyl as well as their physiologically active salts and amides thereof and the enantiomers, mixtures and racemates are disclosed. Intermediates useful in preparing the above compounds are also disclosed as are processes for preparing these compounds.

Acetic acid derivatives and their production

A process for obtaining a substantially pure enantiomer of an aryl-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid is described. The process utilizes first an enantiomerically enriched mixture the of aryl-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid obtained from kinetic resolution, diastereomeric crystallization or asymmetric synthesis processes. This enriched mixture is reacted with a base producing a salt that has the following properties:

A process for obtaining a substantially pure enantiomer of ibuprofen is described. The process utilizes first an enantiomerically enriched mixture of ibuprofen obtained from kinetic resolution, diastereomeric crystallization or asymmetric synthesis processes. This enriched mixture is dissolved in a solvent and solid racemic ibuprofen is separated, leaving a mother liquid comprising the solvent and the enriched enantiomer substantially free of the other enantiomer.

3,3'-Thiobis(2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxides) on heating with a reactive Diels-Alder dienophile undergo a reaction producing thioethers having two six-membered alicyclic rings in the molecule, such as 4,4'-thiobis(3,6-dihydrophthalic acids) or the esters, anhydrides or imides thereof, and 4,4'-thiobis-(1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic acids) or the esters, anhydrides or imides thereof. Both rings of the dihydrothiophene dioxides participate in the reaction, apparently by forming a tetraene structure which co-reacts with two equivalents of the dienophile to form an adduct in which each six-membered ring has one or two olefinic double bonds. During the course of the reaction, the thioether bridge remains intact. Some of the bis(alicyclic) thioethers are readily converted to the corresponding bis(aromatic)thioethers by use of known aromatization methods and systems. Various utilities for the products of the foregoing reactions are described.

Fluoroalkylphosphorous compounds are disclosed having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are wherein the same or different and are substituted or unsubstituted aryl groups, the substituents are selected from alkyl, aryl, the group consisting of aralkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy and halo; X is a single bond connecting R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, or X is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 linear or branched alkylene, --O-- or --S.sub.g -- where g is an integer from 1 to 3; and n is an integer from 1 to 8. These compounds, when used in organic compositions susceptible to oxidative degradation act to effectively retard such degradation.

Antioxidant aromatic fluorophosphites

A process for the haloalkylation of certain tin, phosphorus and germanium halides is disclosed. The process is carried out typically in a halocarbon solvent at temperatures of less than 0.degree. C. using as the haloalkylating reagent an admixture of a haloalkyl halide and tris(lower alkylamino)phosphine.

The polyetherimides have repeating groups which may be represented by the general formula: ##STR1## They are produced from novel monomers of the formula ##STR2## Synthesis procedures for forming such monomers are also described.

3,3'-Thiobis(2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxides) on heating with a reactive Diels-Alder dienophile undergo a reaction producing thioethers having two six-membered alicyclic rings in the molecule, such as 4,4'-thiobis(3,6-dihydrophthalic acids) or the esters, anhydrides or imides thereof, and 4,4'-thiobis(1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic acids) or the esters, anhydrides or imides thereof. Both rings of the dihydrothiophene dioxides participate in the reaction, apparently by forming a tetraene structure which co-reacts with two equivalents of the dienophile to form an adduct in which each six-membered ring has one or two olefinic double bonds. During the course of the reaction, the thioether bridge remains intact. Some of the bis(alicyclic) thioethers are readily converted to the corresponding bis(aromatic)thioethers by use of known aromatization methods and systems. Various utilities for the products of the foregoing reactions are described.

Despite the instabity of perfluoralkyl anions, it is possible to perfluoroalkylate aromatic compounds if appropriately substituted by suitable electronegative substituents (e.g., nitro, trifluoromethylsulfonyl, etc.). Thus a novel Meisenheimer complex is formed by thermally decomposing a salt of a perfluoroalkanoic acid in the presence of an aromatic compound such as 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene. Oxidation with organic hypochlorite yields the corresponding perfluoroalkylated aromatic compound.
